Lewis, first published in book form in his 'Survey of Symbolic Logic' of 1918. This theory is commonly called the logic of strict implication, because it was originally put forward in opposition to an account of implication which Lewis thought mistaken.""(Kneale and Kneale ""The Development of Logic"" 1962, p. 548 ff.).‎

‎First apperance of Lewis' first paper on relativity in which he derived the mass-energy relationship in a different way from Albert Einstein's derivation.Lewis’ other theoretical interests also flourished at M.I.T. The publication of Einstein’s theory of relativity (1905) and his mass-energy equation renewed Lewis’ interest in his early speculations on radiation. He derived the mass-energy equation from his early idea of the pressure of light without using the principle of relativity (1908). This striking concurrence of his view with Einstein’s convinced Lewis of the value of his youthful ideas and made him one of the very few early supporters of Einstein and relativity in America. Lewis is best known for his discovery of the covalent bond in chemistry. and his naming of the ""photon"" in 1926.The volume contains further importent papers by Rutherford & Royds, Lord Kelvin, Barkla, Soddy, J.J. ‎First edition of this landmark work of Danish book production and the constitution of the Danish absolute monarchy. The Royal Law established the absolute right of the Monarch to rule, and it defined the line of royal succession. It was more rigorous than the other monarchal laws of Europe at the time. The text which is written by Peder Griffenfeld is engraved in copper throughout, in order to prevent the possibility of re-printing, pirated editions and text-counterfeiting. Frederik Rostgaard, the King's state archivist who was famous for his excellent taste in books, was in charge of the editing and issuing of the work. In front of the actual law text a leaf is inserted with the portrait of King Frederik III on his horse, and everything, except for the head of the king which was engraved after his death-mask, is executed in the beloved flourishing- or scroll- manner of the time. The titles and the text are engraved throughout by Michael Røg. ‎

Housed in a slipcase. A very fine copy.‎

‎First edition of this monumental work in Danish book production, a superb, if not the finest, example of eighteenth-century book art. Furthermore, it constitutes the erection of the absolute monarchy - The monarchical moment marks a significant turning-point, not only in seventeenth-century political and constitutional history, but also in the history of early modern Danish political thought. The absolute monarchy, first presented to the public with the present publication, was not abolished until 1848 with a peaceful revolution after the death of Christian VIII. The present copy has belonged to Carl Theodor Zahle, Prime Minister of Denmark from 1909 to 1910 and again from 1913 to 1920 and Minister of Justice from 1929-1935. In 1665, five years after the actual monarchical revolution, the constitutional and political justification of hereditary and absolute monarchy was spelled out in the Lex Regia, the crown jewel of the absolute monarchy. “A renaissance monarchy had fallen, and from the ashes of the former aristocratic society, Frederik III was reborn as an ideal absolute ruler, the only contemporary European monarch to govern by an absolutist constitution. What had begun as a political revolution in Copenhagen soon affected the entire Danish empire. By 1662, the estates in Denmark, Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands had signed a document consenting to the revolutionary changes in the form of government.” “The Kongelov is dated and subscribed the 14th of November 1665, but was kept a profound secret, only two initiated persons knowing of its existence until after the death of Frederick III, one of them being Kristoffer Gabel, the king's chief intermediary during the revolution, and the other the author and custodian of the Kongelov, Secretary Peder Schumacher Griffenfeldt.” (Encyclopedia Britannica) This lavish 1709-edition was its impressive proclamation. “This document is in every way unique. In the first place it is remarkable for its literary excellence. Compared with the barbarous macaronic jargon of the contemporary official language it shines forth as a masterpiece of pure, pithy and original Danish. Still more remarkable are the tone and tenor of this royal law. The Kongelov has the highly dubious honour of being the one written law in the civilized world which fearlessly carries out absolutism to the last consequences. The monarchy is declared to owe its origin to the surrender of the supreme authority by the Estates to the king. The maintenance of the indivisibility of the realm and of the Christian faith according to the Augsburg Confession, and the observance of the Kongelev itself, are now the sole obligations binding upon the king. The supreme spiritual authority also is now claimed the moment he ascends the throne, crown and sceptre belong to him by right” (Bain, Scandinavia A Political History of Denmark, Norway and Sweden from 1512 to 1900). In the beginning of the 18th century it became the fashion to print entire books using copperplates. The edition opens with a beautiful portrait of king Frederik III on horseback, the head of which was realized after the death mask of the regent, whereas the lower part was brought by as a unique calligraphic exercise. Each page has the text surrounded by an ornamental frame which shows different animals symbolizing the countries in which the law was in force. The 500 copies of the King’s Law were meant to be distributed, not to be sold. The publisher was Frederik Rostgaard (1671-1745), state archivist and collector of books. He was appointed to the task by King Frederik IV. The text was engraved by Michael Røg, the illustrations and ornaments by Andreas Reinhardt, using designs by Claus Møinichen. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XVI+255 p., 19 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503518923.‎

‎This volume presents an impressive array of instances of cultural translation between nations, religions, languages, genres, and media. It spans a chronological period that extends from late antiquity to the sixteenth century. Translatio or the Transmission of Culture analyses multiple forms of cultural transmission ' the ancient and medieval arts of memory, the propagation of saints' cults, mechanisms of social and spiritual discipline, and the foundations of national identity - to offer a rich investigation into the formulation of cultural influence in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It explores the materials, methods, and contexts of translation through traditional philological and historical practices, as well as foregrounding provocative new readings of familiar sources influenced by recent research into cognition, ideology, and gender. With something for both the seasoned scholar and the student, Translatio or the Transmission of Culture reveals some of the processes by which meaning is re-made in the present from the materials of the past. Table of Contents: Laura Hollengreen, 'Introduction'; Mary Carruthers, 'Mechanisms for the Transmission of Culture: The Role of 'Place' in the Arts of Memory'; Rebeca Helfer, 'Arts of Recollection and Cultural Transmission'; Rhonda L. ‎This edition of the first treatise on the differential calculus, first published 1696, is the first with the commentaries by the famous French astronomer Nicolas-Louis De Lacaille, taken from his noted ""Leçons élémentaires de mathématiques"".""The Analyse des infiniment petits was the first textbook of the differential calculus. The existence of several commentaries on it - one by Varignon (1725) - attests to its popularity. The question of its intellectual ownership has been much debated. Jean Bernoulli, who is known to have instructed L’Hospital in the calculus about 1691, complained after L’Hospital’s death that he (Bernoulli) had not been given enough credit for his contributions. L’Hospital himself, in the introduction to his books, freely acknowledges his indebtedness to Leibniz and to the Bernoulli brothers. On the other hand, he states that he regards the foundations provided by him as his own idea, although they also have been credited by some to Jean Bernoulli. However, these foundations can be found, less explicitly, also in Leibniz, although Leibniz made it clear that he did not accept L’Hospital’s Platonistic views on the reality of infinitely small and infinitely large quantities.""(DSB).‎

Internally clean and fine. A few tiny brownspots. Wide-margined and printed on good paper.‎

‎Scarce first edition of l'Hôspital's second book - his second successfull textbook - the manuscript of which was left completed at his death in 1704. His first book ""Analyse des infiniment petits pour l’intelligence des lignes courbes"", 1696 was the first textbook of the differential calculus, and his name lives on in the name of the rule for finding the limiting value of a fraction whose numerator and denominator tend to zero. His mathyematical teacher was Jean Bernoulli. The year in which Newton published the anti-Cartesian ""Arithmeticus"" there appeared in France a conspicuously successfull textbook on Cartesian geometry along the lines of that of Guisnée. This was the ""Traité Analytique des Sections Coniques"".... a book which contains less original material than that of Guisnée, but which is more extensive and closer to the modern manner of treatment. The work had been intended for publication at the time the authors famous calculus textbook appeared in 1696, but l'Hospital's illness apparently led to delay and it appeared posthumously in 1707. It is Cartesian in emphasis and although it consists of but one volume, follows generally the tripartite plan of Lahire and Ozanam: first an algebraic quasi-analytic treatment of the Conic Sections along the lines of Apollonian theory"" then an analytic study of the loci, and finally a long section on the customary construction by conics of the roots of cubic and quartic polynominal equations... LHospital sometimes used two axes and seems to have recognized the interchangeability of these, but he betrays some hesitation... In general, L'Hospital (like Descartes) was more interested in analytic geometry as a measure of ecpressing loci algebraivcally than as a method of deriving the properties of a curve from its equation."" ‎First printing of Liebig's milestone work describing the methods for analyzing organic compounds by the ""combustion method for determining carbon and hydrogen in organic compounds, a method still in use. The paper was first published in ""Annalen"" in 1831 (the paper offered). His insistence that chemistry could be applied to agriculture marks the beginning of the practical applications of chemistry which dominated his life.""(Dibner ""Heralds of Science"" No 46). - He notably introduced a method for determining the amount of urea in a solution. This substance is found in blood and urine of mammalss, and was the first organic compound to be sunthetized, that is to be built up from inorganic substances. The work is more often referred to under the title ""Anleitung zur Analyse organischer Körper"", published 6 years later in 1837, this is the case for both Dibner and Horblit. Horblit in ""Milestones of Science"" No. 67, adds that it ""Appeared earlier in ""Annalen der Physik und Chemie, vol. 31..(the paper offered) He calls it ""Importent publication of the constitution of organic compounds, with descriptions in detail of the modern method of chemical analysis"".""Organic compounds generally had molecules of far more complicated structure than those of inorganic ones, and methods for analyzing the former quantiiavily lagged. Gay-Lussac and Thénard had worked out a way of burning organic compounds and measuring the quantity of carbon dioxide and water that was formed. By 1831 Liebig had taken this technique in hand and perfected it to a point where, from the figures on carbon dioxide and water formed, accurate measurements of the carbon and hydrogen in the original compound could be obtained.""(Asimov).Dibner No 46 - Horblitt No 67.The volume contains other importent papers Sefström ""Ueber das Vanadium..."" ‎First appearance in French of Liebig's two papers on fermentation and first appearance of Pasteur's paper. Liebig's papers started a bitter controversy (after Liebig's death continued by Claude Bernard) as he claimed, that all ferments are chemical reactions and not vital processes. Pasteur, on the other hand, claimed that life is needed for fermentation.""From 1865 to 1870, while Pasteur was preoccupied with the silk-worm problem, his theory of fermentation enjoyed increasing favor, especially abroad. What criticism did appear during the period failed to distract him from his centraltask. In 1871, hovever, the ""Annales de chimie et de physique"" published a French translation of a wide-ranging critique by Liebig (the papers offered), who had broken a long silence on the issues of the two lectures (1868, 1869). In a reply (the paper offered) of almost arrogant brevity, Pateur discussed only two aspects of Liebig's critique, both of which involved direct challenges to experimental claims made a decade beforee by Pasteur: (1) that pure yeast and a simple alcoholic fermentation could be produced in a medium free of organic nitrogen and (2) that acetic fermentation required the intervention of ""Mycoderma aceti"". OPasteur responded by challenging Liebig to submit the dispute to a commission of the Academie des Sciences. before this commission, Pasteur boldly predicted, he would prepare, in a medium free of organic nitrogen, as much beer yeast as Liebig might reasonably demand and would demonstrate the existance of ""Mycoderma aceti"" on the surface of the beechwood shavings used in the German methpd of acetification....Liebig died in 1873 without accepting Pasteur's challenge.""(DSB X, ppp. 376 ff.).
