He formulates the two-fluid theory of electricity. ‎Philippe Sylvestre Dufour (vers 1622-1687) était un riche apothicaire lyonnais qui commerçait avec l'Orient. Erudit et collectionneur, il était en contact avec de nombreux savants et personnalités avec lesquels il entretint une abondante correspondance. Il s'exila en Suisse avec son ami le médecin Jacob Spon en 1685 (peu avant de temps avant la révocation de l'Edit de Nantes, lorsque l'exercice de la médicine fut interdit aux Protestants). On lui attribue la publication en 1671, à Lyon chez Girin et Barthélémy, de : "De l'usage du caphé, du thé et du chocolate", petit traité de 12ff. et 188 pages (Oberlé, Faste de Baccus, N°731). Notre abrégé pourrait bien être une adaptation de l'ouvrage de Dufour, même si la permission d'imprimée, accordée à E. Vitalis le 21 août 1681, ne fait pas mention d'auteur. Le titre du second traité apparait sous le nom d'auteur de Nicolas de Bonnefons dans "Les fastes de Baccus "d'Oberlé (N°614), réuni avec d'autres textes dans une édition grenobloise de 1692 sous le titre "Les plaisirs innocents et amoureux de la campagne..." . Cet ouvrage apparait ici dans sa très rare édition originale qui fut reprise en 1674 sous le titre "Instruction pour élever, nourrir, dresser, instruire & penser toutes sortes de petits oyseaux de volière, que l'on tient en cage pour entendre chanter. Avec un petit traitement de maladies des chiens", à Paris, chez Charles de Sercy (voir catalogue de la collection de Marcel Jeanson, vente, Sotheby's Monaco, 1er mars 1987, lot 395 ; et vente Bonhams, 22 octobre 2014, N°66). Il y est question du rossignol, du roitelet, du chardonneret, du pinçon, du canarie et de la linotte, des caponègres (fauvette à tête noire), des grives, alouettes et autres merles. ‎

‎Cet ouvrage traite des vertus curatives du café, du thé et du chocolat et sur la manière de les préparer. La partie sur le chocolat est une traduction de l’espagnol par le médecin parisien René Moreau (1587-1656) d’une relation de Antoine Colmenero de Ledesma. Philippe Sylvestre Dufour, né à Manosque en 1622 et mort à Vevey (Canton de Vaud) vers 1687 est un apothicaire, banquier, collectionneur et auteur protestant installé à Lyon. Il s'exila à Genève lorsque l'exercice des professions médicales fut interdit aux Protestants. Il fut l'un des plus riches apothicaires lyonnais par la fortune héritée de sa famille et par son commerce lucratif de drogues en provenance d'Orient.
