‎The Duchess of Devonchire, one of the first lady travellers on here own through Switzerland. She published a ‘Sketch of a descriptive journey...’ in London, 1796, a poem written for her children, in memory of her roundtrip in 1793 through Switzerland (cf. de Beer, Travellers in Switzerland). The mezzotinto is a very special technique, costly and with beautiful results, invented in 1642 in Holland by the German artist L. v. Siegen, it became very popular in the 17th and 18th c. in the English portrait-painting.Although a very important list of works of Ang. Kauffmann (Ec. Suisse) and Dickinson are mentionned in ‘Le Blanc’s’ bibliography, this particular beautiful work is not mentionned. This plate is offered in a fine, handmade, gilt frame.‘Die Schabtechnik, auch Mezzotinto oder Schwarzkunst genannt, ist ein Tiefdruckverfahren, das 1642 in Holland von dem Deutschen Ludwig von Siegen entwickelt wurde. Sie erlebte im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert in der englischen Porträtmalerei ihren Höhepunkt.Aufgrund des hohen Arbeitsaufwands, der mit dieser Technik verbunden ist, gibt es wenig moderne Arbeiten in Mezzotinto. Uit de akten van het kapittel weet de auteur een boeiend relaas af te leiden over de uitbreidingen, verbouwingen en stoffering van het gebouw. Dit relaas geeft een vrij scherp beeld van de opeenvolgende periodes waarin de oude romaanse collegiale geleidelijk haar huidig uitzicht kreeg. Nieuw. ‎

This French announcement was published 4 days before his longer paper ""Das Spaltungsgesetzt der Hybride"", in which Mendel is mentioned.De Vries completed most of his hybridization experiments without knowing about Mendel's work. Based on his own results, de Vries drew the same conclusions as Mendel. De Vries published his work in 1900, first in French then in German. In the French report there was no mention of Mendel, but this was amended by de Vries in the German paper. It is possible that de Vries read Mendel's paper before he published his own, and included Mendel's name in the later printing when he realized that other people also knew about Mendel's work.
