‎Summary While the funerary portraiture of Palmyra is rightly world-renowned, up to now, the corpus of sarcophagi from the ancient city has received relatively little attention as a cohesive group in their own right. Comprising sarcophagi, banqueting reliefs and founder reliefs, as well as sarcophagus reliefs, most of these objects share a common iconographic motif, that of the banquet, although other scenes, mostly drawn from the daily life of the city's caravan leaders and their families, also appear. The emphasis on the banqueting scene in particular reveals the crucial importance of dining in ancient Palmyrene society: for the living, banquets were a marker of social standing and gave hosts a chance to honour the gods and offer an ephemeral benefaction to their fellow citizens, while for the dead, the banquet motif offered the opportunity for the entire family to be depicted together and showcase their wealth and sophistication, as well as their connections outside the city. This single corpus of material gathered through the Palmyra Portrait Project, is presented in this beautifully illustrated two-volume monograph. Through careful analysis of the portraits, and the costumes and attribute choices that appear in these images, the authors explore how the sarcophagi were used by Palmyrenes to project an image of local pride, while at the same time participating in the visual cultures of the Roman and Parthian Empires between which their city was situated. ‎Summary The story of the use of the drill in European sculpture has not yet been written, although it should be fascinating.? So argued Rudolf Wittkower in one of the lectures on the processes and principles of sculpture that he gave as Slade Professor of Fine Arts at Cambridge in 1970. In agreement with Wittkower?s view, this volume presents a series of case studies on the use of the drill ranging from ancient Egypt to the beginning of the twentieth century. Conceived as a catalogue for an ideal exhibition, the book illustrates, in chronological order, various works of art whose creation significantly depended on this tool: not only statues and bas-reliefs, but also architectural decoration, vases in precious stone and utilitarian objects, made in a range of materials including marble, wood, clay, ivory and more. This variety highlights the extraordinary challenge faced over millennia by the drill in its numerous forms (bow drills, gimlets, pump drills, to name but a few), which did not undergo significant technological transformation until the advent of electricity. This tool directly confronted, to a greater extent than others, the hardness of the sculptural materials, piercing them, splitting them and manipulating them beyond any apparent limitation set by nature. In its tussle with the drill, the very affordance of the material was threatened, defeated by the expressive will of the sculptors, their visual cultures, their frames of reference and their notions of nature and art. ‎Pierre BRENOT (1913-1998), affichiste des "années 50", formé par l'école Estienne, dessinateur de mode et collaborateur de la fameuse agence De LA VASSELAIS qui regroupe les principaux affichistes de l'après guerre. Il est aussi un illustrateur au talent reconnu. Dans la presse de charme ses couvertures pour le Rire ou la Vie Parisienne séduisaient un très large public. Ses femmes dessinées glamour et sexy ont gagné l'appellation de "Brenot-Girls", faisant fureur dans les calendriers automobiles et animaient les murs de nos villes. (Exposition FORNEY 1996). Une jeune-femme, vêtue d'un simple pull-over rose à la marque Collunovar, tire sur son pull, telle une femme sandwich, provocante, faisant face à celle représentant la marque Hématon, sexy. ‎Edition quasi originale tant elle est différente, remanié, corrigée, augmentée de celle de 1781.Très jeune, Portal s’était spécialisé dans l’anatomie, domaine dans lequel il est devenu excellent, au point d’organiser un cours à Paris alors qu’il était lui-même étudiant à la Faculté ; il était même médecin-tâteur pour diagnostiquer, ce qui lui permit bientôt de proclamer la liaison entre les lésions des organes et les symptômes des maladies. En 1769, Portal fut nommé adjoint dans la section d’Anatomie de l’Académie des Sciences ; il fut également choisi comme médecin par le Comte de Provence q’il suivra pendant 22 ans et en 1770, il publia sa monumentale Histoire de l’Anatomie et de la Chirurgie en sept volumes! La même année, Portal occupa la chaire de Médecine au Collège de France, il y enseigna l’Anatomie, la Chirurgie, la Médecine opératoire et l’Anatomie pathologique. Pendant 30 ans, ses cours furent suivis par des foules d’auditeurs français et étrangers. Mourant, Sérac lui demande de publier une nouvelle édition de son “Traité de la structure du coeur”, ouvrage important déjà, mais que Portal va tellement développer qu’il en fera un ouvrage qui sera reçu avec ferveur dans toute l’Europe. Portal eut ensuite une carrière absolument extraordinaire au point de devenir Premier médecin du Roi Louis XVIII. Petite épidermure sinon bel exemplaire. ‎
