Summary The fifth volume of the ARCANE series presents an up-to-date and richly illustrated synthesis of the archaeology of the 3rd millennium BC in the Upper Tigris region of Northern Iraq and South-eastern Turkey, the first to fully include the results of international rescue excavations carried out in both countries in the second half of the 20th century in the framework of dam projects. Written by well-known experts, it revises all aspects of the material culture and history, and proposes a new periodisation and terminology for the region. It thus poses a sound basis for the evaluation of the recently revived archaeological research in Iraqi Kurdistan. Together with the other volumes of the ARCANE series, it will represent an indispensable reference for students as well as for scholars of the Ancient Near East, in particular for those interested in the Early Bronze Age and in inter-regional connections. Summary Human agents might not be the measure of all things. Nonetheless, human bodies, and their bodily dimensions, often are, with size impacting on the ways in which we conceive of, interact with, and relate to the world around us. The scaling up or down of features ? magnification and miniaturization ? is particularly evident in the creation of anthropogenic items intended for use in religious ritual, and here sizing can be employed as a deliberate strategy to encourage shock and awe, admiration and deterrence, among spectators. Taking as its starting point the concept of 'materialities and meanings', this volume explores how human perceptions and understanding of magnified and miniaturized forms and structures are shaped and changed, both synchronically and diachronically, by our understanding of the human body and its size, and the impact that this has in our relationship with the wider world in the context of ritual practices. The chapters collected here consider a range of questions, from a discussion on the essentials of magnification or miniaturization to an exploration of the impact of such strategies on humans and their wider socio-political ramifications. Together, these chapters contribute to a unique discussion that offers new insights into 'materialities and meanings', the creation of items for ritual, and the ways in which they influence human perception and understanding. Summary In recent years, the study of epigraphy and ancient writings has undergone a 'material turn', as scholars have increasingly looked beyond just the contents of written sources to also focus on their broader material and visual contexts as a way of exploring the layers of different meanings that can attach to written evidence. Taking this interdisciplinary approach as its starting point, this volume draws together contributions from specialists in different fields in order to analyze text-bearing objects and monuments from across the ancient Mediterranean world. From texts inscribed on large stone monuments and buildings, clay, or metal tablets, to writings on papyrus and parchment rolls, jewellery, vases, coins, and textiles, writing on different materials had manifold possibilities. The case studies gathered here examine novel approaches to the creation and display of inscribed objects, as well as to the ways in which such items were approached and perceived by people during a chronological period ranging from the Late Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. In doing so, the volume sheds new light not only on the interplay between ancient texts, text-bearers, and viewers within their wider spatial and physical contexts, but also on the possibilities opened by exploring the material aspects of writing through interdisciplinary approaches. Summary The 3rd K ltepe International Meeting aimed at exploring multidisciplinary approaches to the archaeology and history of complex urban sites using K ltepe-Kanesh as a case study. As a result, the conference proceedings involve a wide variety of disciplines: archaeology, ceramics, paleobotany, paleoecology, palynology, archaeometallurgy, geo- and archaeo-magnetism, art history, philology, history, computer science, and last but not least, videogame design. Indeed, the aim of the K ltepe International Meetings (KIM) is to facilitate the dialogue between these different disciplines and to combine their data in order to build an accurate view of K ltepe and its environment. The 3rd KIM more than fulfilled this goal, demonstrating once again how K ltepe functions as an international experimental laboratory in which disciplines and sub-disciplines can be tested, improved, and developed. All the contributions presented here provide a good overview of the ongoing multidisciplinary studies being carried out at K ltepe and Central Anatolia. Summary This fourth volume in a collection based on the biennial interdisciplinary meetings held in K ltepe, ancient Kane?, draws together sixteen contributions that explore the archaeology and history of this site, with the ongoing aim of taking a holistic approach to revitalizing this important early Anatolian cultural centre. The papers gathered here present both current research and recent important results derived from research in K ltepe and its wider surroundings through four key thematic strands: cultural exchanges between this site and its environs; material culture; sealings, writings, and history; comparisons with other sites across Central Anatolia. Through this approach, this volume is able to explore not only the historical importance of K ltepe, but also to highlight the settlement's future importance as a pilot site for interdisciplinary studies, thanks to its unique textual and archaeological data. Summary This fifth volume of a collection devoted to the interdisciplinary meetings held one every two years at K ltepe, ancient Kane?, brings together eighteen contributions dedicated to the archaeology and history of this Central Anatolian site and its surroundings. Each chapter within the volume presents the results of current research into K ltepe, thus continuing the holistic approach first demonstrated in earlier volumes of the K ltepe International Meetings sub-series of revitalizing one of the most important cultural centres of early Anatolia and of emphasising its importance as a pilot site for interdisciplinary studies. Drawing on K ltepe's unique textual and archaeological data, the studies gathered here are organized into four key thematic sections devoted respectively to politics, law and religion; women, family and correspondence; human and animal skeletons; and to the most recent archaeological excavations in K ltepe covering a period from the Chalcolithic to Hellenistic times.
