Summary This monograph examines the Late Classical and Hellenistic bronze coinages of five mints in the Thessalian perioikic region of Magnesia. At the core of this work lies a new die-study of the coins produced by the strategically and economically important coastal cities of Homolion and Meliboia as well as the lesser-known mints of Eureai, Eurymenai, and Rhizous. Combining this die-study with a close examination of the cities' topographical context in a border region between Thessaly and Macedon and drawing on archaeological data from Magnesia and beyond, the monograph addresses key questions concerning the chronology, denominations, and circulation patterns of the bronze issues minted on eastern Mount Ossa. This analysis not only throws new light on coin production in Late Classical and Hellenistic Magnesia, but also allows a discussion of the possible military and non-military functions of the region's different bronze issues. Placing the coins of Eureai, Eurymenai, Homolion, Meliboia, and Rhizous in their wider context, this monograph furthermore addresses broader issues in the history of Thessalian coinage. In particular, the monograph's regional approach offers an unusual opportunity to examine to what extent Thessaly's Late Classical and Hellenistic civic coins were genuinely local in design, production, and function. The monograph thus both explores the coins of Mount Ossa and contributes towards a better understanding of the introduction and development of bronze coinages in the wider Thessalian region and beyond. Summary This volume analyses how and why members of scholarly societies such as the Royal Society, the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the Leopoldina collected specimens of the natural world, art, and archaeology in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Henry Bitterfeld?s De formatione et reformatione Ordinis Fratrum Praedicatorum was the first work of its kind written in support of the Observant Reform of the Dominican Order, which took off in the late fourteenth century. It was probably composed around 1388-1389 at the request of the Order?s Master General, Raymond of Capua, who formally launched the reform in 1390. The treatise is organized into three parts: first, the principles of religious life in general; second, the causes of the crisis within the Order of Preachers; and third, the remedies by which it might be resolved. It concludes with a commentary on the prologue to the Dominican Constitutions. Bitterfeld?s work survives in four manuscript copies, along with three distinct medieval abridgements. Taken together, these testify not only to the reception of the text itself but also to the spread of Observant Reform ideals both within and beyond the Dominican Order.
Discovery of the Individual Post-Chalcedonian Christological Debates and the Dawn of Scholasticism in Early-Byzantine Thought

In the central chapters of this book, Marcin Podbielski and Anna Zhyrkova examine the work of John the Grammarian, Leontius of Byzantium, and Leontius of Jerusalem, showing how, in their writings, a philosophical innovation only associated significantly later with Medieval Latin discourse was brought into existence and clearly formulated: the discovery of the individual, and of the problem of individuation. This discovery, expressed in terms of a radically existential conceptualization of the hypostasis of Christ, as well as of hypostases of created beings, is discussed in counterpoint to the proposals of John Philoponus and Boethius, and also as synthesized, codified and preserved by Maximus the Confessor and John Damascene. Such a diverse group of five early-Byzantine authors, animated by a shared concern to preserve and clarify the Christological doctrine of Chalcedon, resorted to speculative philosophy to create a conceptual vehicle for the Christian doctrine of there being one Christ both truly divine and truly human. Their notion of ?hypostasis? came to designate the subject of natures, existent in its own right and exhibiting all the hallmarks of individuality, found in later Medieval investigations. An inquiry into the philosophical and theological background of this discovery, including a comprehensive historical reconstruction of the concept of hypostasis, makes it possible to show the philosophical and theological novelty of the authors studied, which consists also in their creating a properly Christian approach to philosophical speculation that foreshadows Scholasticism and can be considered a kind of Proto-Scholasticism. The book concludes with an exploration of the philosophical import of the discovery and the model of Christian philosophy it furnishes.

What is a house? What is dwelling? How can a house be a body? What does ''being modern'' mean in rural Africa? How are local and global worlds intertwined through material culture? This book reflects on the meanings of housing in West Africa by analysing vernacular architectural traditions and the related ideas and worldviews grounding these building traditions. In the West, much attention is paid to the quality of housing in terms of material comfort and durability. However, houses no longer grow organically, and are no longer layered by time, or embedded in a social community and intertwined with the natural environment. The house, and even more the interior of the house, has become an expression of the individuality of the inhabitant (witness the whole marketing of lifestyle, design, interior decoration, cocooning, etcetera). Paradoxically, though, this goes hand in hand with the erosion of the house as a signifier. Houses are becoming almost generic realities, without a memory or a past, the anonymous results of mass-production, or the interchangeable, standardized products of a globalised Ikea and turnkey culture. Many of the important phases of the lifecycles of the inhabitants no longer unfold within the house, but are evacuated to spaces external to it (hospitals, restaurants, hotels, party rooms, funeral homes, banquet halls). In contrast to the poor signifier that the Western house has become, the chapters in this book analyse the rich meanings embedded in the processes of dwelling in rural West African worlds, with a specific emphasis on Ghana and Burkina Faso. At the same time, the authors document the changes that are manifest in the material and social structures of these houses, and show the flexibility and responsiveness of traditional practices of building and dwelling when confronted with the influences of urban modernity. As such, this reflection on local architectural forms also deals with many of the challenges and issues currently facing Africa.

Kati Heck wordt beschouwd als een erfgename van het Duitse expressionisme. Haar werk doet denken aan de bars, dansers en acteurs van Otto Dix en George Grosz, net als aan de oude meesters. Ze synthetiseert stijlen en is net zo goed een abstracte expressionist als een realist. Delen van haar schilderijen zijn minutieus weergegeven op gestikte doeken, met een unieke virtuositeit en acute aandacht voor detail, terwijl andere delen abstracter weergegeven of zelfs gebeeldhouwd worden. De manier waarop ze niet-traditionele materialen en alledaagse objecten in innovatieve en eigenzinnige combinaties verwerkt, herinnert aan Robert Rauschenberg. Hecks portretten belichamen een diepe, overtuigende en sociale visie, en zijn tegelijk ondoorgrondelijk persoonlijk. De weergegeven onderwerpen zijn meer dan enkel acteurs, het zijn meestal zelfportretten en personen uit haar directe omgeving. Rooted in the Symbolist tradition of the fin-de-siecle and drawn to the avant-garde, Leon Spilliaert (1881-1946), was a loner who never occupied a clear place in the art of his time. He shared not only his home port of Ostend with James Ensor, but also his sense of mockery and irony, non-conformity and an urge to view the world differently. Spilliaert, however, created a spiritual visual language of his own, experimenting with pastels and gouache, playing with purified expanses of colour and elegant lines. The moonlit sea, solitary, vacantly gazing figures, beaches stripped of all human presence, empty rooms and stylized, backlit silhouettes - Spilliaert invariably evoked an atmosphere of mystery, magic and alienation in line and colour.
