In the wake of democratization in post-war Belgium, Moeschal is best known to the general public for his monumental sculptures that are an integral part of the motorway network. Hoe lukt het de jonge kunstenaar Kees van Dongen (1877-1968) om door te breken in Parijs en in korte tijd uit te groeien tot n van de meest beroemde kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw? Deze vraag staat centraal in dit boek. Van Dongen behoorde tot de voorhoede van Nederlandse kunstenaars die rond 1900 vernieuwing zochten in Parijs. Daar omarmde hij de avant-garde en in 1905 nodigde Picasso hem uit om in atelier Le Bateau-Lavoir, in Montmartre, een ruimte te betrekken. In deze omgeving ontwikkelde hij zich tot schilder van figuur en vernieuwer door kleur en toets. Daniel Colin was born in 1963 and was primarily influenced creatively by the 1980s growing up. The 1980s were a tumultuous period culturally, and were marked by growing global capitalism, global mass media, significant discrepancies in wealth, alongside a distinctive sense of music and fashion, epitomised by electronic pop music and hip hop. Artists growing up during this time were heavily influenced by this cultural atmosphere. The 1980s were a significant decade politically, marked by the African Famine and the end of the Cold War, which was signified by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Neo Geo and The Pictures Generation became leading art movements during the decade, alongside Neo-Expressionism which became well-known in Germany, France and Italy (where it was known as Transavanguardia). Artists such as Anselm Kiefer, J rg Immendorf, Enzo Cucchi, Francesco Clemente and Julian Schnabel were leading artists of the era, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, who established the street art and graffiti movements.
