Even as a teenager he dreamed of exploring the Orient. At the age of 19 he set off for the first time and visited Greece, Palestine and India. In the following 40 years he traveled to Syria, the Arabian Peninsula and Persia and lived for some time in Egypt and Algeria. Prisse d'Avennes explored Egypt, dressed in Arab robes, under the name Idris Effendi. As a researcher of ancient Egyptian and Islamic cultures, he later wrote in his history of Egyptian art: ?I have selected the most elegant models, those whose shape gives a very accurate idea of ??the taste and luxury of that time when Egyptian artistry was at its peak brilliance.? In 1844, Prisse d'Avennes traveled from Alexandria to France, where three years later he published Monuments gyptiens (Egyptian Monuments). This volume contains 51 plates based on drawings he made during his time in Egypt. After another stay in North Africa, he returned to Paris in 1860 with the fruits of his numerous travels in his luggage: hundreds of folio drawings, photographs, sketches, maps and 400 meters of bas-reliefs. Fascinated by the symmetry, complexity and opulence of Egyptian and Arabic art, he drew on this enormous fund to create collections on art and architecture, in which he incorporated his research into the historical, social and religious context as well as his studies of original documents. ‎Summary Incubation (temple sleep) was a well-known ritual in the Near East and became increasingly popular in Classical and Hellenistic Greece, becoming attached to Asclepius and other divinities. It flourished in the Eastern Mediterranean, where it was encountered by the emergent Christianity. Temple sleep was so widespread that it was impossible to ban. The Christianization of the incubation ritual was thus a detailed and lengthy (but successful) process that encompassed several aspects of the Church's self-definition, including important social and theological issues of the era. The list of relevant issues is extensive: the fate of Greek temples and the reinterpretation of sacred space, confronting Hippocratic medicine, and the learned Greek intelligentsia. Since disease and a search for cure is a ubiquitous human need, the early Church embraced a healing ministry, in secular terms as well as in ritual healing. Incubation records show how the Church viewed dreams, conversion, or the notions of magic and divination. All these come within the framework of writing miracles: the transformation of the cult was thus incorporated into standard Church discourse, from ritual practice to proper literary genres. ‎Belle édition sur papier vélin sortie des presses de Pierre Didot illustrée de 9 planches précédées de leur explication, dessinées et gravées au trait par Étienne Imbard qui comprend toutes les parties du tombeau de Louis XII réalisé par les frères Juste (plans, coupes, élévations et détail d’architecture), le Porc-épic de la Maison d’Orléans en frontispice (numéroté “I et II” sur une même planche) et le portrait de Louis XII (planche III). Elles sont toutes avec la lettre. Ouvrage précieux pour les artistes et l’histoire de l’art, utile pour les architectes et les sculpteurs alors que le mausolée en 1815 faisait encore partie du Musée Royal des Monuments français avant d’être remis dans la basilique Saint-Denis l’année suivante sur ordre du roi Louis XVIII.
