‎ Dans les contextes français, un hôtel particulier (français [ot?l pa?tikylje]) est une maison de ville d'une grande sorte. (En anglais médiéval, hôtel était rendu par « auberge », la maison de ville d'un noble, qui ne subsiste désormais que telle qu'elle est utilisée dans les auberges de la cour. Particulier signifiait « personnel » ou « privé »).[1] Alors qu'une maison ordinaire était construite dans le cadre d'une rangée, partageant des murs mitoyens avec les maisons de chaque côté et donnant directement sur une rue, un hôtel particulier était souvent indépendant et, au XVIIIe siècle, il serait toujours situé entre cour et jardin, entre la cour d'entrée, la cour d'honneur et le jardin derrière.[2] Il existe des hôtels particuliers dans de nombreuses grandes villes, comme Paris, Bordeaux, Albi, Aix en Provence, Avignon, Caen, Lyon, Montpellier, Nancy, Rouen, Rennes, Toulouse et Troyes. Le terme est comparable à la maison de ville qui abritait le noble britannique à Londres.‎
