In 1927, the architect in charge of historical monuments, Henri Deneux, published the first study devoted to the development of carpentry from the eleventh century forward. Research has made considerable progress in the field since then, particularly thanks to the contribution of dendrochronology, which appeared in France during the period 1970-1980, allowing precise dating of materials to be provided based on the study of tree rings. This book is the result of collaboration between architects, university scholars, Belgian and French dendrochronologists, and offers a synthesis with regard to carpentry from the XIth through the XIXth century, from north of the Loire to Belgium. It contains a typological and chronological classification with 300 examples of carpentry constructions, and a catalogue of beautiful models preserved at the Centre for research on Historical monuments in Paris. It is a valuable reference work for all those ? art historians, architects, building restorers ? who are interested in this topic. New.

The monograph of Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638) is presented as an adherent of sixteenth-century artistic theory, in particular as taught by Karel van Mander in the so-called Haarlem academy. According to this erudite Flemish immigrant, Dutch artists were shamefully backward with respect to mastery in rendering the nude, the great accomplishment of the modern Italian masters. He must have viewed the art of his younger friend - who had taken his advice and overcome these shortcomings by pursuing a lengthy period of intense study 'from life' - as the ultimate fulfilment of his ambition to elevate Dutch history painting to the level of Italian art. Eight chapters are dedicated to the biography of Cornelis Cornelisz, his triple training as an artist, his artistic development, his training of pupils, his influence on the art of his time, his reputation among contemporaries, and the appreciation of his art through the centuries. A ninth, concluding chapter treats the iconographical aspects of two exceptional commissions which the artist received from the Amsterdam poet Hendrick Laurensz Spieghel, and the programmatic underpinnings of his greatest performance, the decoration of the Prinsenhof in Haarlem. Six appendixes contain original transcriptions of seventy-five documents concerning the artist and his family, including the unique list of art left by Cornelis Cornelisz, as well as other relevant sources. Five catalogues list the complete oeuvre of Cornelis Cornelisz, which comprises 303 paintings, either preserved or known from contemporary sources, a mere thirteen drawings, seven works in oil on paper, five models for prints, and twenty-three prints after his inventions. The catalogues are ordered iconographically, whereas the thirty-two colour plates and 365 plates in black and white are arranged in chronological order.Extensive indexes enhance the accessibility and usefulness of the volume.

Rubens book Palazzi di Genova' was well diffused in European countries as England, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy thanks to the numerous contacts the famous painter and diplomat maintained in humanistic, artistic and political circles. From 1622 on this book, containing two volumes, was edited at several times during the 17th and 18th Century. But the direct influences of the numerous facades, plans, cross-sections, staircases and building details on modern architecture look rather limited, especially in his own country. In this study, several scholars in architectural history analyse how the examples of Genoese palazzi and churches as presented by Rubens were accepted in different European countries. Much attention is given to the question if these examples inspired a new architectural typology, in which the inner court of the houses was substituted by a 'salone in mezzo'. An attempt is made to situate Rubens' book among the late 16th and early 17th Century treatises and model books. The way in which Rubens presented the new Genoese architecture of villa's, palaces and churches and the introduction he wrote as a 'painter-architect' to this book were so modern at that time, that the reception of this prestigious edition in folio had more to do with changes in considering architectural theory and practice as with the propagation of a late renaissance style influenced by Antique examples.
