Le tirage est limité à 350 exemplaires, celui-ci un des 110 exemplaires numérotés "sur Japon ou vélin d'Arches" (celui-ci sur Arches), paraphé par l'éditeur, contenant deux états des eaux-fortes, dont l'eau-forte avec remarque. In-12 broché de 45 pp - [3 ff.]., avec in fine le bulletin de souscription pour cet ouvrage, suivi de deux pages témoins. Tampon d'ex-libris au rabat du premier plat. Couverture rempliée. Couverture un peu salie, intérieur en bon état malgré quelques pâles rousseurs en marges. Ce texte inspiré de la Kabbale parut la première fois en 1883, en épilogue des "Contes cruels". ‎

‎De centrale hypothese in dit boek is dat de interne dynamiek en de externe invloeden in de Lage Landen prachtig op elkaar hebben ingespeeld. De vroege politieke emancipatie van grote delen van de samenleving en de selectieve imitatie van buitenlandse voorbeelden verklaren waarom de intermenselijke relaties in de Nederlanden van de vijftiende eeuw zo ?progressief? aandoen. Dat geldt in de eerste plaats voor de vergevorderde emancipatie van de vrouw, het kind en het kerngezin. Kenmerkend is bijvoorbeeld de aandacht die aan de opvoeding van meisjes werd besteed: doordat ze een opleiding kregen die niet voor die van hun broers moest onderdoen, waren ze ook weerbaarder in het beroepsleven. (Franse theologen waren overigens niet te spreken over het feit dat Vlaamse ouders hun zonen en dochters samen in bed durfden te stoppen.) Daarenboven waren er de stevige juridische positie van de vrouw, vooral de weduwe, en de ruimdenkende houding inzake bastaardkinderen. Ik verwijs ook naar de behoorlijke organisatie van de sociale vangnetten voor armen, onvermogende studenten en bejaarden, en naar het dichte net van hospitalen en opvangcentra. In sommige steden werd bovendien een systeem van erfrecht en huwelijksgoederenrecht geintroduceerd dat de continuiteit van kleinschalige familieondernemingen in de hand werkte. Daardoor kon die originele economische formule zich ontwikkelen naast de vroeg-kapitalistische industrietakken en de klassieke ambachten en neringen.‎

‎Dit boek gaat over een onbekende kant van de beroemde Leidse arts Herman Boerhaave: zijn leven als plantkundige. In 1709 werd Boerhaave hoogleraar geneeskunde en kruidkunde, en prefect van de Leidse Hortus Botanicus. Binnen een jaar had h? ij een catalogus van alle planten in de Hortus samengesteld. Gedurende v? ijftien jaar noteerde h? ij ? in zogenoemde zaaiboeken ? alles wat h? ij zaaide of plantte in de Hortus en later op Oud-Poelgeest, het landgoed dat h? ij kocht omdat de Hortus te klein was voor zijn verzameldrift. Bioloog Margreet Wesseling ontdekte in deze zaaiboeken een schat aan nieuwe informatie die zij combineerde met gegevens uit de vele brieven die Boerhaave schreef. In Boerhaave Botanicus presenteert de auteur een aanvulling op het beeld dat wij van de arts Boerhaave hebben. U leest over Boerhaave?s botanische vrienden, zoals de Brit William Sherard en Jean Baptiste Bassand, hofarts te Wenen; over Fransen, Italianen, een Spanjaard en een jonge Zweed. Overal vandaan stuurde dit internationale gezelschap? zaden naar Boerhaave. Bomen hadden Boerhaave?s bijzondere belangstelling. Op Oud-Poelgeest stichtte hij? een arboretum met exotische soorten uit Noord-Amerika en Oost-Indie, maar ook alle soorten essen en wilgen die hij maar kon bemachtigen. Carolus Linnaeus, de later beroemd geworden grondlegger van o.a. botanische nomenclatuur, kwam er op bezoek en noemde het een waar paradijs. Boerhaave Botanicus is een eerbetoon aan een man met een onverwoestbare werklust, een arts die zich in korte t? ijd een nieuw vakgebied eigen maakte en zoveel botanische kennis vergaarde dat h? ij van zijn vakgenoten internationaal veel waardering kreeg.‎

‎Met bloeiende havens in Antwerpen, Brugge en Gent groeide Vlaanderen in de 17de eeuw uit tot een ware culturele hotspot en tot een belangrijke transitzone voor de import en export van decoratieve luxeartikelen. Fijn gedecoreerde pronkkisten en -kasten en andere kostbare kleinnoden in lakwerk werden eerst door de Portugezen en later door de V.O.C vanuit het Verre Oosten naar Antwerpen verscheept, toentertijd een van de belangrijkste stapelmarkten van Oostaziatische producten. Deze luxeartikelen met hun glanzende laklaag en decoratief inlegwerk spraken tot de verbeelding en al snel oversteeg de vraag het aanbod, wat de Europese ambachtslui stimuleerde om ook zelf met de techniek te experimenteren. Op deze manier ontstonden her en der, en niet in het minst in Vlaanderen, nieuwe laktradities in een herkenbare stijl en met eigen motieven. Dit boek situeert het Vlaamse lakmeubel - in de geschiedenis van de decoratieve kunsten lange tijd stiefmoederlijk behandeld - voor het eerst in haar historische context. Seventeenth century Flanders was a cultural hotspot for both the fine and decorative arts. With well established ports in Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent, it became an important transit region, both for the export of local produce and the import of highly ornamental luxury products and valuables, such as lacquer boxes and ornamental lacquer cabinets imported from the Orient. These oriental high-gloss items, richly inlaid with wood and intricate mother of pearl motives, were built to stand the test of time. Some hundred paintings are revealed, especially in the cities of Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven and Mechelen. For the first time, the book zooms in on this important subgenre of Flemish portraiture. The paintings present a wide variety of compositional types and integrated iconographic elements. Monumental life-size portraits coexist with small scale representations. At the same time, there is a clear differentiation in typology according to the city where they were produced. Along with the formal analysis, attention is paid to the material-technical genesis of these compositions, combining in some cases visual observation with scientific imagery and archival evidence. Also the question why patrons would order a group portrait, and how to interpret such ?corporate splendour?, is dealt with, making use of the richly collected contemporary documents, which permit to contextualize the portraits and, in some cases, reconstruct their original habitat. They thus shed light on a number of factors that were involved in the realization of Brabantine civic group portraits: the type of patrons and their socio-economic and political position; the immediate cause for ordering a group portrait; the artists called upon; the prices and terms of payment; and the destination ? (semi)public / private, sacral / secular ? of the paintings‎

Tijdens de 16e eeuw maakte de heilige Hieronymus dertig procent uit van alle heiligenvoorstellingen. Maar ook in de 17de eeuw bleek de heilige van grote betekenis in de beeldende kunst en had hij een voorbeeldfunctie in de contrareformatie en het humanisme.
