Hieronymus Cock (Antwerpen 1518-1570) was schilder en graveur. Samen met zijn vrouw Volcxken Diericx stichtte hij een van de eerste prentenuitgeverijen van het Noorden. Vanaf 1548 publiceerde zijn uitgeverij (In de Vier Winden of Aux Quatre Vents) honderden belangrijke etsen en gravures. Prenten naar fresco's en schilderijen van Rafael en Bronzino, de eerste reeks klassieke ruines, antieke beelden, naast ontwerpen van noordelijke kunstenaars zoals Maarten van Heemskerck of Frans Floris, werden op grote schaal verspreid in heel Europa en droegen aldus het schoonheidsideaal van de renaissance uit. Het was Cock die het talent ontdekte van Pieter Bruegel, die hem meer dan zestig ontwerpen voor prenten bezorgde. Hij was het ook die het initiatief nam om gravures te maken van enkele van de fantasierijke monumentale composities van Hieronymus Bosch. In dit boek wordt de productie van het bedrijf van Hieronymus Cock en zijn vrouw nauwgezet gereconstrueerd en geanalyseerd. Het maakt de lezer ook bewust van de cruciale rol van de prentenuitgever in de kunstgeschiedenis.

Frans van Mieris the Elder is one of the major seventeenth-century Dutch genre painters (1635-1681). His pictures are of remarkable quality, and they attest to his vital role in the development of painting in his time. With Gerard ter Borch, Nicolaes Maes, Pieter de Hooch, Johannes Vermeer, Gabriel Metsu and Gerard Dou, Frans van Mieris participated in the greatest era of Dutch genre painting.This study attempts first to establish the core of surviving works, setting them in chronological order based on a structure of dated paintings. Undated pictures are arranged in relationship to this core and to dated or datable paintings by other artists. Van Mieris' oeuvre is most interesting in this latter aspect: in the establishment of subjects and stylistic formulae he often precedes his contemporaries. By combining various elements from earlier pictures with his personal style Van Mieris made a significant contribution to Dutch genre painting.Van Mieris's leadership among the fijnschilders of his day contributed significantly to the development of Dutch painting towards a tighter, more refined style. Often, paintings executed in this manner during the last quarter of the seventeenth century can be seen to derive from his prototype or from a series of related paintings based on his primary example.

Caesar van Everdingen is now justifiably regarded as the most prominent representative of Dutch Classicism. His art is important to the general study of history painting in the Golden Age and particularly to the assessment of the decoration of the Oranjezaal in the Huis ten Bosch at The Hague. New and extensive archival research has made it possible to complete the artist's biography. His oeuvre is presented in the form of a catalogue raisonne.The book begins with an introduction providing a historiographic review. This is followed by a biography of the artist and an overview of his career and stylistic development. All his known works are included in the catalogue: some thirty history and genre paintings and an equal number of portraits, whose history and iconographic contents are discussed in depth. Special attention is devoted to Van Everdingen's large-scale commissions, such as the decoration of the organ in the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar and the three outstanding works he contributed to the decoration of the Oranjezaal. Over the years he received important commissions not only from the city of Alkmaar and institutions like the Hoogheemraadschap of Rijnland (the polder board of the Rhineland) but also from burghers in Alkmaar and Haarlem. The catalogue is followed by appendixes containing transcriptions and translations of archival documents, lists of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century references to paintings by Van Everdingen and a list of works no longer considered to be by his hand.

Exemplaire N°17 sur un tirage total de 80 exemplaires tous sur vélin d'Arches, les 16 premiers avec dessins ou suite.Né à Lantignié dans le Rhône (1877 - 1956), Philippe-Charles Burnot s'établit à Lyon en 1900 comme dessinateur de soieries ; en 1919, il s'initia à la gravure sur bois grâce à Georges Bruyer et exposa ses gravures pour la première fois au Salon d'Automne en 1920. En 1925, il exposa ses bois gravés à l'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs ; il passa ensuite à la gravure sur cuivre, au burin ou à la pointe sèche. Admirateur de Matisse, de Paul Klee et de Kandinsky, il exposa à Lyon en 1955, pour la dernière fois, des burins, monotypes et collages abstraits. Tout au long de sa carrière, il illustra bon nombres de livres de Valéry, Marc Seguin, Forot, Audin, Aguettant, Bainville, etc.Ses Oeuvres sont conservées au Musée d'Art Moderne et à la Bibliothèque Nationale à Paris, au Musée de Jersey-City, au Musée National de Varsovie, au Cabinet des Estampes de Bruxelles, au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg, au Musée des Arts et Techniques de Saint-Etienne et, bien-sûr, au Musée des Beaux Arts et à la Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon (Bénézit).Magnifique ouvrage à la gloire de l'arbre, dans une très belle reliure ; la planche supplémentaire a été fixée par quatre morceaux de papier collant et quelques petites cloques sans gravité aux feuilles de placage ; petites usures à l'étui.

Frans Francken de Oude (ca. 1542-1616) was een van de bekendste historieschilders van zijn tijd. Als zelfstandig schilder specialiseerde hij zich in altaarstukken. Met zijn triptieken wist hij zowel gilden en ambachten als religieuze orden te bekoren. His work and life are also linked to the political, religious, socio-economic and cultural changes that the second half of the sixteenth century and the first decades of the seventeenth century typified. Although Frans Francken was praised during his lifetime, his work soon became after his death into oblivion. The catalog raisonne brings not only still preserved works back under the attention, but also sheds light on a fascinating lost oeuvre.

Ils menèrent une existence de noctambules boulevardiers, hantant bars et restaurants chics de la capitale qu'ils croquent avec verve et esprit dans ce roman.
