Summary How do you paint a figure who is fully human and fully divine? How do you paint Christ? Strangeness and Recognition takes a fresh look at well-known Renaissance paintings of Christ and shows how surprising and deeply 'strange' they can be. This book brings an imaginative and affective theological perspective to the viewing experience as it explores the twin roles played by 'strangeness' and 'recognition' in responding to the challenge of creating and relating to images of Christ. By confounding expectations and defamiliarising subject matter, the ambiguity and mystery of these paintings disturbs viewers' expectations and reconnects them with the extraordinary mystery of the Incarnation. While neither words nor images can fully describe God, through a questioning, challenging dialogue with paintings, whose visual language disrupts itself, viewers can be brought to the limits of their own understanding and can enter into transformative and personlike relationships with paintings. These personal exchanges lead through estrangement to the rediscovery of the familiar within the strange and the renewed within the familiar, and to the ultimately unspeakable, unpaintable, mystery of the Incarnation. Drawing on a diverse range of theologians, philosophers, art historians and art theorists, and building on her own earlier work, Chlo Reddaway shows the theological potential of Christian images, even when they are far removed from their original contexts. A major contribution to the emerging field of visual theology, this book will appeal to scholars of theology and art history alike, as well as to the museum-going public. An illuminating study of the work of artist Martin Kippenberger, whose art expressed the enthusiasms and frustrations of the West German middle class. Martin Kippenberger ? Everything Is Everywhere is the first scholarly monograph in English on West German artist Martin Kippenberger (1953?1997), one of the most prominent German artists of the 1980s. In this book, Chris Reitz shows that the condition of Kippenberger?s art was an endless, enthusiastic searching, constrained by the impossibility of fulfillment. A child during West Germany?s Wirtschaftswunder, the economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s, and a young adult during the economic recession and political tumult of the 1970s, Kippenberger belonged to the first truly postwar generation. But, largely uninterested in the legacy of National Socialism that had occupied his predecessors, Kippenberger instead pursued a hyperproductive artistic practice that reflected the dreams and fears of the ascendent 1980s West German middle class. Kippenberger?s ambitions took him everywhere: he founded a museum in Greece, invested in a fashion business and a restaurant, and even bought a gas station in Brazil. He made art in a dizzying range of genres, from paintings to poetry, from posters to stickers. He made art out of his appetites, too, producing art on the theme of his own alcoholism. Intensely entrepreneurial, Kippenberger carried out an artistic practice in which his diverse endeavors, and the people who joined him in them, were all connected in a sprawling network. Reitz deftly presents Kippenberger?s career as an allegory of the neoliberal networks of capital, technology, and culture that spanned Europe and America in the 1980s.

Monografie.

This publication is a monograph about the Retablo de Isabel la Catolica by Juan de Flanders and Michel Sittow, and presents a discussion of attribution supported by technical examination of the individual panels. This book will be the first serious monograph about the Retablo de Isabel la Catolica (ca. 1496-1504) painted by Juan de Flanders and Michel Sittow. After tracing the history and critical history of the altarpiece (and publishing some archival material for the first time), it will present the first discussion of attribution to the supported by technical examination of the individual panels, including infrared reflectography and microscopie examination of the painted surface. Technical examination also supports an interpretation of the artists' treatment of subject matter as being closely related to the religious and political issues that concerned Queen Isabella in the waning years of her reign. The conservatism inherent in the austere painted treatment of the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary is compared to conservative works of religious literature commissioned by or dedicated to the Queen in the years that the altarpiece was being painted. Finally, a brief catalogue of the surviving twenty-eight panels will restore a degree of narrative coherence to a project that is too little understood in large part because of the early dispersal of its paintings. Summary The work of the fifteenth-century Italian painter Pisanello has long proven resistant the interpretative procedures of art history, in ways that point to the limits of those procedures as they evolved in the period after the Second World War. Taking Pisanello's art as an example of a larger theoretical issue, the book proposes a model of interpretation that addresses the realm of imitative practice. Using Cennino Cennini's Il Libro del' Arte as a primer, the author argues for an approach that confronts the evidence of the artist's self-tempering work, and then tests that model through an examination of Pisanello's drawings and medals. She exposes the drawings as primary evidence of the ontological groundwork within which the painter finds his own habits of invention, and also demonstrates the value of looking for the groundwork in a selection of Pisanello's official works, including the surviving wall paintings in Veronese churches. In the end, the author contends that the self-reflexive recognition of creative agency is a prerequisite for the apprehension of Pisanello's art, especially the agonistic scenario staged in his panel of The Virgin and Child with Saints George and Anthony and its enigmatic signature.
