These volumes catalogue more than 200 botanical drawings from the Erbario Miniato, an early seventeenth-century herbal made for Federico Cesi and acquired by Cassiano after Cesi's death in 1630. Also included are a further sixty or so loose sheets that originally formed a companion volume, broken up in the eighteenth century, and botanical drawings commissioned by Cassiano and Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo. Most of the drawings depict the native flora of central Italy, but mycological specimens, rarities from across Europe and recently imported species such as the crown imperial, the tobacco plant, the tomato and the aubergine are also represented. This book is the first volume on the artistic representation of industrial disputes in European art (from 1870 to 1914) since the catalogue of the landmark exhibition Streik, Realit t und Mythos, organized by the Deutsches Historisches Museum (1992). It has been written by a group of scholars who share a keen interest in social history and the history of art, as well as in-depth knowledge of industrial relations and collective labour law. Seeking to transcend a purely western European perspective, the book offers unprecedented insights into artistic production in Poland and Hungary from the 19th century to the communist era. It even goes beyond the European continent, examining the United States and Mexico. The media explored include painting, sculpture, the graphic arts and photography. Further, the book deals with artists great (Carlo Carr , Walter Crane, James Ensor, Juan Gris, K the Kollwitz, Constantin Meunier,Mih ly Munk csy, Th ophile-Alexandre Steinlen and Jan Toorop) and small, sometimes even anonymous. The artistic styles range from (social) realism, naturalism and neo-impressionism to futurism and socialist realism. All stages of industrial disputes (from the causes of strikes to their violent suppression) are subjected to iconographical and iconological analysis, combined with perspectives from visual studies, critical art and gender studies. Agricultural workers, miners, construction workers and textile workers fill the scenes. Most of them are subordinate workers; others are (bogus) independent workers and migrant workers. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to (art) historians, labour law scholars, and specialists in industrial relations.

Summary Whereas other volumes in the Corpus Rubenianum series address a single topic, Part IV (The Holy Trinity, The Life of the Virgin, Madonnas and The Holy Family) deals with very distinct topics, two of which, The Trinity and The Life of the Virgin, form the subject of the present book. More precisely, the book deals with the Virgin's pre-Annunciation life, as those episodes involving her son - the Annunciation itself, Mary's suffering during Christ's passion, her assumption, and coronation - have been treated in the parts of the Corpus that deal with Christ's life. The focus here is on Mary's birth, upbringing and marriage, events described in varying detail in Early Christian and medieval texts. Not all the works discussed are by Rubens himself, but all show his artistic ingenuity, evident in his novel treatment of well-known subjects, often with a long visual tradition, as well as in his ability to devise new ones. Also catalogued here are such important altarpieces as The Immaculate Conception once owned by Philip IV of Spain and the magnificent Virgin as the Woman of the Apocalypse. The very different theme of The Holy Trinity comprises just four entries, which, however, constitute half the volume. During the occupation of Mantua by Napoleonic troops, the three enormous paintings which Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga had commissioned from Rubens were removed from the Church of Santissima Trinit . The Transfiguration and The Baptism of Christ, both prime examples of the Trinity's manifestation on earth, have survived intact. The Gonzaga Family in Adoration of The Trinity was, by contrast, cut into fragments. The large central section with the portraits of Vincenzo, his wife and parents looking up at the angels displaying a tapestry with the Trinity was, however, rescued for Mantua. Other fragments, primarily with portraits of the children and halberdiers, were dispersed, though some have since resurfaced. The analysis of this commission offers the first comprehensive treatment of the material in English and highlights this project as the earliest indication of Rubens's creative potential in designing large-scale decorative programmes. Real? honest men?, the Brueghels took part in the intellectual epic of their day which, from humanism to the spirit of the Enlightenment, brought about a renewal in thought and laid the foundations of Modernity. Through the human adventure of the Brueghel dynasty, progressing from obscure beginnings to recognition by the very greatest, Florence de Voldere introduces us to the genius of these men who created the Flemish aesthetic identity. She takes us through the Renaissance in Flanders in the form of a story in pictures. Through this approach based on a dynamic reading of the paintings, this book shows the crucial role of art at one moment of civilization, and opens up some decidedly novel perspectives for interpreting Flemish art.
