Feuilles de garde jaunes. Inscription cadeau contemporaine sur le papier de fin. le demi-titre porte l'approbation du Cardinal Prince de Croy. Trois planches gravées (frontis et deux autres) et une page de titre gravée. Il y a un peu de frottement sur les planches, mais dans l'ensemble le dos et les planches sont en bon état brillant. le papier frontal a une entaille dans le coin supérieur. Le reste de ce livre est en bon état, légèrement noirci sur les bords des pages. La plaque frontale tient toujours bien, mais risque de se détacher (légèrement lâche jusqu'à la moitié supérieure). Dans l'ensemble une copie sonore. Le livre raconte l'histoire des missions de diffusion de la foi catholique. Il y a des chapitres sur les missions jésuites, les missions à Constantinople et en Hollande. Sections également sur la religion des Arméniens, des Éthiopiens et du monastère du mont Sinaï, la mission en Guyane etc. : La seconde moitié du livre est en deux sections. Le premier traitant de la Mission en Amérique pour convertir les Amérindiens - (Les « Sauvages » de l'Illinois et de la Louisiane). La seconde avec la Mission en Inde (1701, 1709 etc.), et au Tibet.‎

Contemporary gift inscription to the end paper. half title carries the approval of Cardinal Prince de Croy. Three engraved plates (frontis and two further) and an engraved title page. There is a little rubbing to the boards, but overall the spine and boards are in good bright shape. the front end paper has a nick to the top corner. The rest of this book is in good condition, slightly darkened to the page edges. The frontis plate is still holding well, but is in danger of becoming detached (slightly loose to the top half). Overall a sound copy. The book is telling the history of the missions to spread the Catholic faith. There are chapters on the Jesuit missions, missions to Constantinople and to Holland. Sections also on the religion of the Armenians, Ethiopians and the monastery at mount Sinai, the mission to Guyana etc: The Second half of the book is in two sections. The first dealing with the Mission to America to convert the Native Americans - (The "Savages" of Illinois and Louisiana). The second with the Mission to India (1701, 1709 etc.), and to Tibet.‎

Aussi des navires et des parties de navires, et des portraits à l'encre de gentilshommes. Les paysages sont souvent autour de Saint-Malo. Tous habilement exécutés au crayon, à l'encre ou au fusain. Au total il y a 13 pages de paysages, 13 de portraits, 12 de navires et bateaux et 4 autres croquis. Il y en a aussi quelques autres non significatifs. Tous dessinés entre 1884 et 1900 - ceux-ci sont créés par une main habile. Il y a un poème dédié à "Justine", qui se termine par le nom de l'auteur/artiste Louis de Crèvecoeur. 105 x 170 mm.‎

‎A beautiful sketch book by an unknown French artist. This contains sketches of landscapes of Northern France. Also ships and parts of ships, and ink portraits of gentlemen. The landscapes is often around St. Malo. All skillfully executed in pencil, ink or charcoal. In total there are 13 pages of landscapes, 13 of portraits, 12 of ships and boats and 4 other sketches. There are also a few others not significant. All drawn between 1884 and 1900 - these are created by a skilled hand. There is a poem dedicated to 'Justine', with ends with the author / artist's name Louis de Crèvecoeur. 105 x 170 mm (4Œ x 6Ÿ inches).‎

‎A Travel Photograph Album Of England, Germany, South Tyrol And Austria. ‎

‎A lovely large format photograph album of a tour of England and Wales in 1893. There was also a tour of Bavaria, Salzburg and Innsbruck in 1895. The album starts in 1893 and has 38 photographs (mostly Albumen) of England and Wales. These are mostly large (24cm x 32cm) images. There are some smaller (18.5 cm x 23.5cm). They appear to be commercially purchased photographs. There are also a further 9 smaller (17cm x 22cm and 12cm x 18cm) images of cottages with descriptions on the back. These seem to be personally taken photographs? The trip began with the Needles on the Isle of Wight, (24cm x 32cm) and continued with similar photographs of the Isle of Wight, Tennyson's house, Southsea & Portsmouth, Tintern Abbey. The tour then moved on to Wales, and there are photographs of North and South Wales, with quite a few of Betws-y-coed, and some bridges in the area. The trip moved on to Chester, with a number of photographs of Eaton House in Chester, and Hatfield House. A second part of the album covers a trip in 1895, comprising 23 photographs of Bavaria, Salzburg and Innsbruck. The photographs are all of good condition, still bright, with a touch of fading only. A few have light creasing, or the odd tear where they have come away from the album at some point, but overall a very presentable and attractive album of English and European topography from the 1890's. The album itself is black buckram with leather spine and corners. There is some rubbing to the boards, and some scuffing. A tape repair (with black tape) to the spine. The album measures 37cm x 45 cm. The photographs have hand written annotations below describing the view. There is some staining to the inside boards of the album and a few of the cardboard backing sheets are wavy, but this doesn't really affect the photographs.‎

‎Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published, anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such, this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years, summarising Bishop Burnett, Stillingfleet and others, whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON, Presented the First of January, 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster, by Authority of Parliament, against TOLERATION. This pamphlet has been abstracted from a collection, and so appears as a disbound item - with the binding marks and stab marks to the spine. No wrapper or cover (now held in a protective sleeve. The top edge of the first couple of pages is beginning to come away - although the binding is still holding securely. A touch of darkening to the front and rear pages, less so inside. There are pencil ticks throughout the work in the margins. Wing B 4382. [4], 67, [1] pp.‎

‎Carrousel de L'Ecole de Cavalerie 1908 ‎

‎Saumur E. Roland 1908 Un programme attrayant pour le Carrousel de 1908. Les couvertures avant et arrière présentent des dessins de Grasser. Le programme à l'intérieur indique le nom, le grade, etc. de chaque officier de cavalerie participant, et ce qu'ils font pendant le Carrousel. 4 pages. 320 x 250 mm (12œ x 9Ÿ pouces). Les couvertures sont un peu assombries et marquées. Petit trou d'épingle sur un bord. Fente réparée sur les 3-4 cm inférieurs du dos. L'intérieur est propre mais légèrement assombri. Une belle pièce d'histoire militaire / équine éphémère. L'école de cavalerie de Saumur a été créée en 1763 pour former les cavaliers à l'armée. La légende veut que l'évêque de Saumur ait fait déménager l'école à Saumur pour faire souffrir la ville protestante (après que les officiers aient été trop amicaux avec les dames locales). Le carrousel régulier est l'un des points forts de l'équitation française. L'école existe toujours aujourd'hui, formant les officiers des régiments de chars et soutenant le Cadre Noir, l'élite des cavaliers français.‎

‎First Edition. An attractive programme for the 1908 Carrousel. The front and rear covers show designs by Grasser, The programme inside, show the name, rank etc of each cavalry officer taking part, and what they are doing during the Carrousel. 4 pages. 320 by 250mm (12œ by 9Ÿ inches). The covers are a little darkened and marked. small pinhole to one edge. Repaired split to the bottom 3-4 cm of the spine. Internally clean but slightly darkened. A nice piece of ephemeral military / equine history. The Cavalry school at Saumur was established in 1763 to train riders in the military. Legend has it that the Bishop of made the school move to Saumur to bring pain to the Protestant town (after the officers had been too friendly with the local ladies). The regular Carousel is one of the highlights of French Horse riding. The school still exists today, training officers of the tank regiments, and supporting the nearby Cadre Noir, France's elite horse riders. .‎

‎A nice copy of this two volume work, unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards, with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work, particularly to the edges, and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing, again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. (IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition, when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one). Also lacking is leaf 3I2 (page 99/100) with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely, a full page plate, dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown, showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily, published in various forms, is important, as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98, [vi], 1-98 101-320 [iv]. 290 x 210 mm (11œ x 8Œ inches).‎

À l'intérieur se trouvent du noir et des papiers et 3 feuilles (6 pages) de tableau noir rigide - prêtes à être tracées à la craie. Les bords du livre sont plutôt frottés et la reliure présente des craquelures et des manques, mais néanmoins un bel objet. 90 par 60 mm (3œ par 2Œ pouces).‎

‎A bit of a curiosity, this small book has no maker's details or date. It comprises a hardback cloth binding with a lithograph of two girls dancing in front of a mirror. The date is based on their clothing! This looks French and was purchased from a French Marche de puce. Inside are black and papers and 3 leaves (6 pages) of stiff chalk board - ready to be chalked upon. The edges of the book are rather rubbed and the binding has cracking and loss, but nevertheless a nice item. 90 by 60mm (3œ by 2Œ inches).‎

In addition to the blank end paper and illustrated title page, there are 8 further leaves, inked to one side only. The foreword explains how this is a tale picked up from Elves dancing in the round in the forest. There are then six leaves which contain verses in manuscript, and a silhouette drawing to each leaf. Finally, there is a naive end paper with the moon and sheep. The boards are in sound but slightly rubbed and bumped condition. Internally, the pages are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. An attractive piece of home production. First Edition. 23cm x 31cm .‎

These are somewhat rubbed with significant rubbing and loss to the spine. Written number to the front cover. The date c.1750 is printed on the remnant of a catalogue label stuck to the front cover. The impressions of the engravings are somewhat are somewhat blurred. P. 41, repeated on p. 76, the illustrations are not woodcuts but metalcuts. The shape of the heads of the nails with which the plates were mounted on wood are printed on many of them. A nice example. 86 (2) pp. 205 x 165 mm (8 x 6œ inches). The binding is a little rubbed with some loss to the surface layer of the leather. Binding is still firm and holding together well. The paper itself is of a fairly cheap quality, but is clean and tidy throughout. Overall a nice example of this very scarce item. No copies on COPAC, and only one in the KVK catalogue of German and Austrian holdings. 141, [x] pp.‎

‎A scarce Genovefa chapbook. Seems to be the second edition by Peters. The retelling of the legend of Saint Geneviève of Brabant, printed by Gustavus Peters of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Peters was a German immigrant printer and thought to be America's first colour printer. Text in German. Illustrated to first page - which also serves as the front cover. Age toned, with some finger marks. Small owner's stamp to the head of the first page. Overall in decent condition. 38 pages. 165 x 105 mm (6œ x 4Œ inches) A scarce Pennsylvania German printing, there are no copies recorded of this issue on Jisc / Copac. On FirstSearch we can find a record of the first edition of 1836, but no reference to this edition. Publication date aside, our copy conforms to OCLC: 316900097. ‎New York McLoughlin Bro's Publisher's 1874 Un livre d'images pour enfants de huit pages, gravé sur bois et coloré à la main, intitulé ABC / alphabet. La couverture jaune du livret porte l'inscription suivante : "The History of an Apple Pie" (L'histoire d'une tarte aux pommes) : The History of an Apple Pie (L'histoire d'une tarte aux pommes) au recto, et une publicité de McLoughlin Brothers au verso. La page de titre se lit comme suit : Dunigan's History of an Apple Pie : Dunigan's History of an Apple Pie. Pas de date, mais vers 1874. Trois grandes capitales décorées par page ; les coupes pour les lettres I, L, O, R, U et Z sont signées Elton (c'est-à-dire le mentor de John McLoughlin et son premier partenaire commercial). Les couvertures jaunes sont propres, mais légèrement assombries. Il y a quelques petites déchirures fermées (1-2mm) sur les bords. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé. Le livre a été recousu. 190 x 115 mm‎

‎An eight page hand-coloured woodcut children's ABC / alphabet picture book. The booklet's yellow covers read: The History of an Apple Pie to front, and has a McLoughlin Brothers advertisement to the back cover. Title page reads: Dunigan's History of an Apple Pie. No Date, but circa 1874. Three large decorated capitals per page; cuts for letters I, L, O, R, U and Z are signed Elton (i.e. Robert E. Elton - John McLoughlin's mentor and early business partner). The yellow covers are clean, but with a little darkening. There are a few minor closed tears (1-2mm) to the edges. Inside, it is clean and tidy throughout. The book has been re-sewn. 190 x 115 mm (7œ x 4œ inches). .‎
