This books describes the life of Elisa ben Abraham Cresques, known to many as the author of the Catalan Atlas, and focuses on the Jewish aspects of his fascinating career, his professional profile, and his scholarship. This book presents a small chapter in the intellectual history of the Jews of Majorca. Its key figure is Elisha ben Abraham Bevenisti Cresques (1325?1387) a cartographer in the service of King Peter IV of Aragon and a scribe and illuminator of Hebrew books. Elisha Cresques? career evolves at a point in time when some of the most fascinating threads of methodological interests relevant to intellectual history meet. He emerges as a hub, so to speak, where mapmaking converged with scribal work, miniature painting with scientific knowledge, and the culture of a minority with that of the majority. How he was able to negotiate his patron?s expectations and his own cultural identity and frame them within the political, cultural, and religious discourses of his time is the subject of this book.

This volume examines the relationship between linguistic usage and the norms that define it within the Greek language. Covering the Imperial Age, Byzantine period, and Renaissance, it draws on a wide range of sources?including literary texts, documentary material, and grammatical treatises?to trace the evolving concept of linguistic correctness. Bringing together specialists in Post-classical and Medieval Greek, the volume investigates how linguistic norms and standards were shaped by their sociocultural and historical contexts. In addition to its exploration of theoretical frameworks for linguistic correctness, the volume addresses key themes such as the interaction between high and low registers in official documents and the contributions of Byzantine grammarians to the development of syntactic and stylistic conventions. Incorporating approaches from (historical) sociolinguistics, the collection underscores the dynamic nature of Greek as it balanced tradition and innovation. Scholars of Greek language and linguistics will find in this volume a valuable resource for understanding the interplay of language, culture, and history across centuries.

Human-avian relationships developed in many ways throughout the Iron Age, particularly in the first millennium AD in Central and Northern Europe. These airborne animals foraged and scavenged close to settlements, inviting interactions ? wild birds were hunted, and domesticated poultry were bred for meat, feathers, and eggs; other birds were kept for entertainment or sport, with raptors trained for falconry, and the importance of birds is noted in texts ranging from Pliny the Elder to Old Norse poetry. This volume offers new insights into the extraordinary role played by birds in the past, from their roles in the pre-Christian beliefs and rituals of Iron Age societies to their appearance in early Christian iconographies, and from the discovery of their remains in everyday and ritual contexts to the styles employed by artists on jewellery and weapons. The result is a unique insight into the important relationship between birds and humans in the cultures of Central and Northern Europe in the first millennium AD.

From fairgrounds to lecture halls, cabarets to classrooms, the magic lantern cast its glow across the modern world. Long before cinema, this versatile projection device captivated audiences with dazzling images, dramatic storytelling, and immersive spectacle. At once a scientific tool, a medium of persuasion, and a form of mass entertainment, the lantern became central to the making of modern visual culture. This book explores the magic lantern?s extraordinary role in shaping popular performance and entertainment in the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. Bringing together leading scholars from across disciplines, its chapters follow itinerant showmen, professional lecturers, and theatrical illusionists as they built audiences across Europe, North America, and Australia, forging connections that made the lantern a truly international medium. Spectacles of Light completes the trilogy on the magic lantern in the Media Performance Histories series, shifting focus from religion and education to the vibrant worlds of entertainment.
