‎Nicholas Trevet's Commentary on the Psalms (1317 - c. 1321): A Publishing History‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 389 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:16 col., 1 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503602103.‎

‎Summary How did medieval authors publish their works in the age before print? This study seeks to achieve new insights into the publishing strategies of medieval authors by focusing on Nicholas Trevet, an English Dominican friar and Oxford master. Shortly after 1317, Trevet was commissioned by his provincial prior to write a literal commentary on the Psalter. He chose as his reference version the less commonly used Latin translation by Jerome from the Hebrew, and delivered his work before 1321/22. The first book-length examination of Trevet's commentary, this detailed study traces the ways in which the work was circulated by the author and his proxies. Through a combined analysis of codicological, textual, and historical features of the nine extant fourteenth-century manuscripts, this study identifies contemporary efforts to make Trevet's work available to readers within and without the Dominican Order, in England and on the Continent. Even during the author's lifetime the commentary was copied in Paris and reached readers in Avignon and likely in Naples. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Chapter 1. ‎Allusions to Scripture in the Psalms of Solomon. Textual Tradition, Interpretation, and Historical Implications‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 154 pages, Size:148 x 210 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 3 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Greek, Hebrew. ISBN 9782503611143.‎

‎Summary Like other Jewish works from the late Second Temple period, Psalms of Solomon alludes constantly to passages in Scripture?particularly the Pentateuch, the Prophetic books and Psalms. Gathering all passages where the Psalms of Solomon refer to a specific verse in Scripture, the present monograph ventures to analyze the authors' use of Scripture and to identify the textual tradition underlying the allusions. The conclusion this leads to is that the authors used a Greek version, close to the Septuagint but sporadically revised on the basis of the proto-Masoretic Hebrew text. This conclusion agrees with recent research on revisionary work on the Septuagint, which must have begun in the first century BCE, long before the named recensions of the second century CE (Aquila, Symmachus, Theodotion). The textual analysis casts a new light on the Psalms of Solomon. Although they came into being in Jerusalem in the aftermath of Pompey's conquest of the city in 63 BCE, they were not composed in Hebrew, but in Greek. The identity of the Greek-speaking group that produced the Psalms of Solomon, and their religious views, are discussed in the final chapter of this monograph. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 1. ‎Protevangelium of James. Critical edition, with translation and commentary‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 126 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Greek. ISBN 9782503593142.‎

‎Summary As a prehistory to the Nativity accounts of the gospels of Matthew and Luke the Protevangelium of James, dated to the second half of the second century, aimed to fill in alleged gaps in the canonical accounts of Jesus' and his mother's ancestry and births. Thus, it describes the birth of Mary, the mother of Christ, the Annunciation, the Nativity and the death of Zachariah, the high priest and father of John the Baptist. The edition of the original Greek text has an English version on its facing pages. There are also editorial notes to enable all interested parties to benefit from reading this important and influential text. The commentary pays particular attention to the early liturgical use of the Protevangelium and to artistic representations of the scenes it describes as these were the main means by which this highly influential text was transmitted throughout the known world. It also questions the usually accepted genre and purpose of the text and suggests that its author may have had a satirical intention or have intended it as an early Christian novelette, using scriptural scenes and themes as his inspiration. Maybe we have approached the Protevangelium of James with solemn faces and have been prepared to carry out serious theological investigations, whereas the many inconsistencies and glaring contradictions so obvious as to be ridiculous might suggest the author's intentions were not quite so grave or weighty.‎

‎miracles de saint Etienne, Recherches sur le recueil pseudo-augustinien (BHL 7860-7861), avec edition critique, traduction et commentaire,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, 392 pages ., 20 b/w ill. + 15 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503524221.‎

‎Acts of John‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 110 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:3 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Greek. ISBN 9782503600161.‎

‎Summary The Acts of John is a second- or third-century work of unknown authorship combining elements of the apocryphal acts and pious romance genres. It was labeled heretical by both Eusebius and Augustine, and condemned at the Second Council of Nicea (787). Scholars debate the influence of Gnosticism and docetism upon the work. This narrative presents the lifelong ministry of the apostle John preaching and performing miracles in Ephesus, Smyrna, and elsewhere. At different turns in the exciting account, John resurrects the dead, reunites families, heals the sick, confronts pagan opponents, commands bedbugs, and divulges mysteries about his travels with Jesus. The present edition offers the celebrated Greek text of Junod and Kaestli (Corpus Christianorum, Series Apocryphorum, 1-2, 1983) alongside a new English translation on the facing pages, complete with hundreds of cross-references and other helpful notes for the reader.‎
