‎Summary This book explores the intersection between the early development of medieval universities and the arrival of Aristotle's works in the Christian West, especially De anima: one of his most famous and obscure writings, straddling the fields of biology and psychology, and devoted to the functions of living beings - including the human being. The leading figures in this very special meeting of cultures, also involving scientific writings from the Islamic world, are the Masters of Faculties of Arts. From the first half of the 13th century, they embarked on a theoretically very demanding enterprise, namely to restore a complete understanding of De anima; and they accomplished this difficult task by establishing a close - and often polemical - relationship with their more famous colleagues: theologians such as Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas. By resorting to the research and teaching methods of their time, the Masters of Arts addressed crucial topics such as the soul/body relationship, sense perception, intellectual knowledge and the special status of the human intellect, mediating, as far as possible, between scientific requirements and those of the Christian faith. Authors such as Adam of Buckfield, Peter of Spain, Siger of Brabant, John of Jandun and John Buridan, together with other, less famous ones and a small crowd of completely anonymous - yet theoretically no less interesting - scholars, gave rise to a choral narrative that disclosed new philosophical perspectives on man. Mantegazza con quest'opera cerco' di estirpare i mali prodotti dall'ignoranza e dall'ipocrisia del suo tempo che bollo' come il secolo tartufo. Tra gli argomenti trattati: il gatto; quando nacque l'ipocrisia umana; il bene ed il male, il ridicolo ed il sublime; perche' battezzare il secolo tartufo; le ipocrisie sociali, religiose, politiche. Alla fine del volume un ampio catalogo dei piu' noto cosmetici con l'indicazione del loro valore igienico e descrizione: lista di saponi, cosmetici della pelle, olii, pomate ed acque per i capelli, tinture per capelli, depilatori. In discrete condizioni. Brossura editoriale in mediocri condizioni generali con usure ai margini e dorso rinforzato da carta. Legatura quasi assente. All'interno le pagine si presentano in ottime condizioni con rare fioriture. Edition of 1889 of this famous work by the physician, antropologue, patriot and politician Paolo Mantegazza (Monza 1831-1910). Mantegazza with this work tried to estirpate the evils produced by ignorance of his time called by him as truffle century. Among the issues treated: cat; good and evil; the reason why the century is called truffle century. At the end of the volume a wide catalogue of the most famous cosmetics with indication of their hygienical value and descriptions: list of soaps, cosmetics for the skin, oils products for hair, head colours In fair conditions. Editorial cover in fair general conditions with wearings in the edges and spine reinforced with paper. Binding is almost missing. Inside pages are in very good conditions with occasional foxings.‎
