‎Byzantine Illuminated Manuscripts of the Book of Job A Preliminary Study of the Miniature Illustrations. Its Origin and Development,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, 478 p., 127 b/w ill. + 285 colour ill., 23 x 30. ISBN 9782503532325.‎

‎Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. The number of miniature illustrations included in these fifteen manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 16th century, comes to more than 1800 of which 2/3 of the about 380 illustrated herein are previously unpublished manuscript images. The book is an unabridged version with minor changes of Papadaki-Oekland?s Inaugural Dissertation at Heidelberg University (1979) and is published posthumously by her daughters, Helen-Aina and Astrid-Zoe -in homage to Byzantine Art. The fifteen Byzantine Illuminated Manuscript Illustrations of the 'Book of Job' studied, illustrated and discussed are: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Rome: cod. Vat. gr. 749; cod. Vat. gr. 751; cod. Vat. gr. 1231 and cod. Vat. Pal. gr.230 - The Monastery of St. John the Theologian, Isle of Patmos: cod. Patmos 171 - Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Venezia: cod. Marc. gr. 538 - Monastery of St. Catherine, Sinai, Egypt: cod. Siena 3 - Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and All Palestine, Jerusalem: MS. Taphou 5 - Monastery of Vatopedi, Mount Athos: Vatopedi 590 - Monastery Magisti (Great) Lavra, Mount Athos: Lavra B100 - Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens: MS. 62 - Bodleian Library, Oxford: MS. Barocci 201 and MS. Laud gr. 86 - Bibliothegue nationale de France, Paris: MS. gr. 134 and MS. gr. 135 - National Library of Russia, St. Petersburg: MS gr. 382 (former folio of Taphou 5) The study of the Septuagint Book of Job in Byzantine tradition include comparative analysis of the interrelationship of the individual miniature cycles, their general arrangement and artistic character, the origin and development as well as its contents and significance in the literary and popular tradition. Finally, the six Comparative Tables presented at the end of the volume provide the reader for the first time a complete cross reference interrelationship between the individual 1800 images of the 15 manuscripts and 'Sir Lancelot C. L. Brenton's' English translation of the Septuagint 'Book of Job' passages. Further examples of images discussed herein of early Christian 'Job' representations include: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Rome, MS.Reg.gr.1 ? known as the Bible of Queen Christina of Sweden; Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris, MS gr. 510, MS syr. 341-the Syriac Bible and MS.gr. 923- Sacra Parallela; Biblioteca Nazionale 'Vittorio Emanuele III', Naples, Coptic MS IB 18, Catacomb of the Via Latina, Rome and the Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus, Basilica di San Pietro, Rome. Furthermore, the book is of invaluable importance due to its methodological approach. As the leading art historian Hans Belting points out, the study of Stella Papadaki-Oekland calls in question Kurt Weitzmann's rigid theory about the process of the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts production. There?s no doubt that, even though it was written a lot of years ago, this remains the most complete and comprehensive study about the Book of Job in Byzantine art. Languages : English.‎

‎Natural Language Processing in Medicine. Design, Implementation and Evaluation of an Analyser for Dutch.‎

‎Leuven, Universitaire Pers, 2000 Paperback, English, original editor's jacket, 16x24 cm., xxi-33 pp. ISBN 9789058670694.‎

‎Symbolae Facultatis Litterarum Lovaniensis - Series C : Linguistica 08. This book describes a complex computer program (implemented in Prolog by BIM) that is, thanks to the application of Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence techniques, able to analyse and process the content of a (limited) set of Dutch patient discharge summaries. Such a program achieves that not only the medium but also the message of medical documents can be treated computationally, which implies the possible automation of several medico-administrative tasks. An introduction to medical language processing as well as an overview of similar international projects is included. The bulk of the effort is dedicated to modules that are specific for the Dutch language. To this aim, existing resources (for Dutch) are re-used and integrated together with original developments. As a result, an electronic dictionary (containing some 8.000 lemmas) and a morphological recogniser (and a tagger/lemmatiser as a derived product) are realised. Another important achievement is a computer grammar (for sentence analysis) with a parser. For other modules (sublanguage and discourse analysis), software that has been developed elsewhere (Linguistic String Project team of the New York University and the Service d'Informatique Medicale, Assistance Publique - Hopitaux de Paris resp.) is adapted and extended for use with Dutch. In this way, intelligent information processing becomes feasible. Two information extraction applications illustrate the potentialities of the program. The application domain is cardiology and cardiac surgery. All components of the system are situated in their theoretical framework, extensively discussed and illustrated by means of excerpts of Prolog code and figures. A thorough evaluation has been performed as well, and the results, if possible, are compared with other results of similar tests. ‎

‎This volume contains a selection from among the papers delivered at a conference held to mark the centenary of a watershed event in early modern studies: the appearance of Volume I of P. S. Allen?s edition of Erasmus?s letters. Erasmus scholarship has been a growing field since the late twentieth century, owing to the enormous volume and vast intellectual range of his oeuvre and to the reprinting of his works from the 1960s onwards, while Allen?s edition has proved the basis for research for scholars of almost every aspect of Renaissance humanism and the Reformation. The conference aimed to investigate as many aspects as possible of Erasmus?s literary, educational, rhetorical, and theological activities and of their influence on the emerging Europe of the early modern era. The essays collected here present a wide-ranging overview of the current state of Erasmus scholarship, including a survey of the discoveries of letters to and from Erasmus unknown to Allen, the printing for the first time since 1529 of the opening section of an important letter to him from Germain de Brie, an account of the crucial role played by Ulrich von Hutten in the publication of the dialogue Iulius exclusus e coelis, and several studies of the influence of Erasmian thought on early modern political and theological controversies. With its broad coverage of the current field, the volume will prove indispensable to Erasmus scholars. ‎

‎Sources of Knowledge in Old English and Anglo-Latin Literature. Studies in Honour of Charles D. Wright‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 460 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, 3 col., 8 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503604428.‎

‎Summary This volume positions source scholarship as integral to an understanding of the transmission of knowledge across intellectual, social, and material networks in early medieval England. Essays in this collection situate source studies in Old English and Anglo-Latin literature within a range of theoretical and methodological approaches as varied as disability studies, feminist theory, history of science, and network analysis, tracing how ideas move across cultures and showing how studying sources enables us to represent the diversity of medieval voices embedded in any given text. The essays in this volume extend the work of Charles D. Wright, who mentored a generation of scholars in methodologies of source study. The essays are organized into three sections. The first demonstrates how source studies facilitate tracing ideas across space and time. The second explores what happens to texts and ideas when they are transmitted from one culture, language, or historical moment to another. The third shows how sources illuminate wider cultural discourses. The volume attests to the flexibility of source work for early medieval English literature and argues for increased access to the tools that make such work possible. ‎Summary This book sheds new light on the Latin background of various Old English homilies, and of certain homilies from related vernacular traditions. Two broad themes are treated, the Nativity of Christ and Christian eschatology; the volume contains five Latin texts dealing with each theme. Critical editions, full English translations, and detailed introductions and commentaries are included, as well as case studies that demonstrate the relevance of each text to one or more homilies written in Old English, and, in a few cases, early Middle English and Old Norse. While the volume is intended for scholars of early English preaching, many of the texts hold considerable intrinsic interest and should have general appeal for medievalists, students of preaching, and those working on the transmission of biblical apocrypha in the Latin West.
