Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. The number of miniature illustrations included in these fifteen manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 16th century, comes to more than 1800 of which 2/3 of the about 380 illustrated herein are previously unpublished manuscript images. The book is an unabridged version with minor changes of Papadaki-Oekland?s Inaugural Dissertation at Heidelberg University (1979) and is published posthumously by her daughters, Helen-Aina and Astrid-Zoe -in homage to Byzantine Art. This book describes a complex computer program (implemented in Prolog by BIM) that is, thanks to the application of Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence techniques, able to analyse and process the content of a (limited) set of Dutch patient discharge summaries. Such a program achieves that not only the medium but also the message of medical documents can be treated computationally, which implies the possible automation of several medico-administrative tasks. An introduction to medical language processing as well as an overview of similar international projects is included. The bulk of the effort is dedicated to modules that are specific for the Dutch language. To this aim, existing resources (for Dutch) are re-used and integrated together with original developments. As a result, an electronic dictionary (containing some 8.000 lemmas) and a morphological recogniser (and a tagger/lemmatiser as a derived product) are realised. Another important achievement is a computer grammar (for sentence analysis) with a parser. For other modules (sublanguage and discourse analysis), software that has been developed elsewhere (Linguistic String Project team of the New York University and the Service d'Informatique Medicale, Assistance Publique - Hopitaux de Paris resp.) is adapted and extended for use with Dutch. In this way, intelligent information processing becomes feasible. Two information extraction applications illustrate the potentialities of the program. The application domain is cardiology and cardiac surgery. All components of the system are situated in their theoretical framework, extensively discussed and illustrated by means of excerpts of Prolog code and figures. A thorough evaluation has been performed as well, and the results, if possible, are compared with other results of similar tests.

This volume contains a selection from among the papers delivered at a conference held to mark the centenary of a watershed event in early modern studies: the appearance of Volume I of P. S. Allen?s edition of Erasmus?s letters. Erasmus scholarship has been a growing field since the late twentieth century, owing to the enormous volume and vast intellectual range of his oeuvre and to the reprinting of his works from the 1960s onwards, while Allen?s edition has proved the basis for research for scholars of almost every aspect of Renaissance humanism and the Reformation. The conference aimed to investigate as many aspects as possible of Erasmus?s literary, educational, rhetorical, and theological activities and of their influence on the emerging Europe of the early modern era. Summary This book sheds new light on the Latin background of various Old English homilies, and of certain homilies from related vernacular traditions. Two broad themes are treated, the Nativity of Christ and Christian eschatology; the volume contains five Latin texts dealing with each theme. Critical editions, full English translations, and detailed introductions and commentaries are included, as well as case studies that demonstrate the relevance of each text to one or more homilies written in Old English, and, in a few cases, early Middle English and Old Norse.
