‎Tabule Resolute. The Central European Type of Alfonsine Tables‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 578, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:26 b/w, 26 col., 106 tables b/w., Languages: English, Latin. ISBN 9782503617121.‎

‎Summary Astronomers and astrologers in medieval Europe used sets of numerical tables, accompanied by detailed instructions for use, to calculate the motions of the planets. The Castilian Alfonsine Tables, created at the court of Alfonso X in Toledo after the middle of the thirteenth century, form the basis of the Latin Parisian Alfonsine Tables (1320s) which became the starting point for the further dissemination and elaboration of astronomical tables in European universities and other cultural centres between the fourteenth and first half of the sixteenth century. A central European version of the Alfonsine Tables are the so-called Tabule resolute. This version was initially compiled for the meridian of Wroc?aw in 1424 and later recalculated for the meridians of Prague, Cracow, Leipzig, Salamanca, Bologna and other cities. The Tabule resolute are preserved in dozens of manuscripts and in several early modern prints, containing both the tables and the rules ('canons') for them. This volume presents the first edition of both the Wroc?aw tables and variants for other meridians and selected canons for their use, compiled by Petrus Cruciferus, Nicolaus Wodka and John of G?og w. The Latin editions are accompanied by annotated English translations. The work is concluded with an explanation of the mathematical principles of the tables and an analysis of the errors in the edited tables. TABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgements 1. Introduction I. ‎Basileae, per Henrichum Petri, 1548.

"Petri seems to have used an entirely different set of blocks for all of the illustrations for his edition... The woodcuts of plants are finely cut, delicate and lively, and much in the character of the best done in Brunfels and Fuchs, though a good deal smaller" (Hunt).

‎Summary Peter of Pisa was among the scholars invited by Charlemagne to his court in the late 780s, and, according to Einhard, Charlemagne's biographer, he taught grammar to the Emperor himself. The present book offers a critical edition of the textbook on grammar that Peter composed while teaching in the palatine school. It has survived in three versions, which enable us to see, how Peter's ideas on language pedagogy developed, when new grammatical works and methods of teaching became accessible to scholars in the court circle. Grammatical education was at the heart of the Carolingian reform of learning, which owed many of its crucial features to Alcuin of York. His teaching of the Liberal Arts assigned major importance to the use of dialectic in all intellectual inquiry, including the study of grammar. This new approach to grammar, which is first attested in the works of Peter of Pisa and Alcuin, affected not only the advanced study of grammar but even secondary level pedagogy. Interaction between grammar and logic became standard practice with the subsequent generations of grammarians, establishing itself as a permanent feature of medieval culture from the eleventh century onwards. It is to this intellectual context that Peter's manual on grammar is related in the present book. TABLE OF CONTENTS Petrus Pisanus - Grammatica - ed. A. Luhtala, A. Reinikka‎
