‎Summary Thomas Gallus (d. 1246) was the Abbot of Vercelli in the north of Italy. Initially a canon regular in the abbey of St Victor in Paris, he helped found a new monastery and church in the home town of his patron, Cardinal Guala Bicchieri. As well as commenting on the Canticle of Canticles three times, Thomas was renowned for his expositions of the works of Dionysius the Areopagite, commentaries which earned him the title magister in hierarchia (master of the hierarchies). This volume contains the first translation in any language of his Glosses on the Angelic (or Celestial) Hierarchy (completed in 1224), as well as his more detailed Explanation of the Angelic Hierarchy (finished in 1243). The commentaries are fascinating for their insights into Thomas's teaching that love has a higher access to an experience of God than the intellect, the role of the angelic hierarchies in the mystical return of the soul, the psychological interpretation of the angels as representing faculties of the soul, and the use of symbols representing analogical features of the divine. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Thomas Gallus, Super angelica ierarchia (CCCM, 223) and Glose super angelica ierarchia (CC CM, 223A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. ‎Summary The corpus of sermons and saints' lives from early medieval England, in English and Latin, is the largest and most varied of its kind from a contemporary European perspective. In recent years this extraordinary body of literature has attracted increasing attention, as witnessed by an efflorescence of new editions, translations, commentaries, essay collections, dissertations, and amply funded research projects such as the Electronic Corpus of Anonymous Old English Homilies (ECHOE) project based at the University of G ttingen. The present collection of thirteen essays grew out of a 2022 conference sponsored by the ECHOE project on Old English anonymous homilies and saints' lives and their sources and reflects the best of current scholarship on early medieval homiletic and hagiographic literature from England. This literature is central to an understanding of the spiritual imagination and social practices of non- lite audiences. Ornée d'une très belle illustration gravée, elle fut donnée par Jean van Broekhuizen, navigateur et poète néo-latin hollandais (Brunet V, col. 856). Exemplaire en grand papier, aux armes de la Famille Victor, probablement émigrée à Amsterdam à la suite de la Révocation de l'édit de Nantes (Escoffier. Série Héraldique I, 21, fer n° 19. Decorated with fine engravings, it was set up by Jean van Broekhuizen, neo-Latin Dutch sailor and poet (Brunet V, col. 856). Copy on fine large paper, bearing arms of Victor family, who probably migrated to Amsterdam at the time of "Edit de Nantes" (Escoffier. Série Héraldique I, 21, fer n° 19. Riestapp II, 995).
