W Walce O Wolnosc / In Fight For Freedom / In Lotta Per La Libertà + three original Polish WW2 pictures, including a photograph of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski signed by himself
This is a set which belonged to Janusz Gluchowski, a high-ranking Polish military officer at the time of the WW2. The set contains three original B&W pictures. First one: undated postcard showing Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, signed by himself in black ink, 8.5 x 13.5 cm, with two embossed mentions above and below. Second picture: undated postcard showing Poland President Gabriel Narutowicz, with a written mention on the back. Third picture: 11 x 15.5 cm photograph. General Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski inspecting a British Cromwell tank, accompanied by Polish officers of the 3rd Armored Regiment (3 puk pancerny). The image was captured during an official ceremony in the city of Kelso, Scotland, in the immediate post-war period, on June 15, 1945. The scene shows the General in an observation position, climbing onto the tank while surrounded by Polish soldiers. The tank corresponds to a British model widely used by Polish forces in exile during the Western European campaign. On the reverse, the following handwritten inscriptions appear: VI 1945, Kelso. N. Wódz gen. Bór-Komorowski dokonuje inspekcji 3 p. panc. N. Wódz w towarzystwie bryg. puku na czogu." / June 15, 1945, Kelso The book is an illustrated three-languages (Polish, English and Italian) set commemorating the struggles of the Polish II Corps. Edited by Wyda Rererat [Referat] Kultury i Prasy Kresowej Dywizji Piechoty in Rome, 1945. Oblong book of 21 x 19 cm, unpaginated (144 pp.). Cover detached. Endpapers and first page show Janusz Gluchowski's stamp. In publisher's photographically illustrated wrappers. Each page contains a photographic image or a photomontage accompanied with a short text in three languages. Front cover shows some wear and tear, the binding is a bit loose - we would advise having this book bound. The Polish II Corps was a major tactical and operational unit recruited from Polish deportees in the Soviet Gulags in 1943. First they fought in the Middle East, and in 1944 February they were transferred to Italy and as independent part of the British Army to fight in the Italian campaign, in the battles of Monte Cassino and Ancona and also the Battle of Bologna during the final offensive in Italy in 1945. The book goes through the story of Poland and the later established Polish II Corps, starting with the German and Soviet occupation in 1939. It shows the deportation of Poles to forced labour to the Gulag and, after the Polish-Russian Military Agreement in 1941, the establishment of the Polish Army on Soviet soil, also their military training and their fights in various battles. Janusz Julian Gluchowski was a Major General in the Polish Army during the Second Polish Republic. He was born on August 6, 1888, in Bukowa. He fought in the Polish Legions in World War I, the Polish-Ukrainian War, the Polish-Soviet War, and the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, Slovakia, and the Soviet Union in 1939, which culminated in the start of World War II. In his adolescence, he attended high school in Czstochowa. In 1905, he became a member of the Combat Organization of the Polish Socialist Party and was wounded in the hand during an attack near Czstochowa. To avoid arrest by the Russian authorities, he left for Belgium, where he studied at the University of Liège. He returned to divided Poland around 1910 and settled in Austrian Galicia. In 1912 he graduated from the Officers' School of the Riflemen's Association in Stroza, near Krakow. In the early hours of August 1914, he commanded a platoon in Oleandria and was Wadysaw Belina-Pramowski's representative during the legendary attack of the so-called Seven Lancers of Belina (Uaska siódemka). On August 6th, together with the First Cadre Company, he left Krakow and marched to Miechów. In October 1914 he was promoted to Lieutenant (Poruchik) and, in November 1916, to Rittmeister (Cavalry Master). Until 1917 he served in the First Uhlan Regiment of the Polish Legions. After the Oath Crisis (Kryzys przysigowy) he was interned first in Fort Beniaminów and later in Werl. Released in October 1918, he went to Lublin, where, in early November, he formed the Third Ulan Regiment (later renamed the Seventh Ulan Regiment of Lublin). Along with his unit, he fought in the Polish-Soviet War. On May 29, 1920, he was promoted to Polkovnik. He was transferred in July 1920 to Eastern Galicia, taking command of the First Cavalry Brigade, fighting against the Soviets in Galicia and Volhynia. After the war, he remained in this position until 1925, when he was transferred to the Fourth Cavalry Brigade. Promoted to Brigadier General on March 16, 1927. Appointed commander of the Center for Higher Military Studies on June 4, 1930, and three years later, after the death of General Stanislaw Tessaro, he was appointed commander of Military District X in Przemyl. In October 1935, he became Deputy Minister of Military Affairs. In the early days of the 1939 invasion of Poland, Gluchowski ordered General Walerian Czuma to prepare the defense of Warsaw. In mid-September 1939, he fled to Romania. After his escape, he managed to travel to the Middle East and, in January 1941, received orders to go to London. In October 1941, he was appointed Commander of the Training Brigade stationed in Scotland. On September 23, 1943, he was appointed commander of all Polish Army units stationed in Great Britain, except the First Independent Parachute Brigade, which remained under the authority of the Commander-in-Chief. He was promoted to Major General on June 1, 1945. He decided not to return to Soviet-occupied Poland and remained in Great Britain. He frequently criticized the Soviet regime and the Soviet occupation authorities in postwar Poland. Furthermore, he was one of the founders and president of the Jozef Pilsudski Institute in London. He was, therefore, an active member of the Polish community in Great Britain. He was president and honorary member of several Polish veterans' organizations. He died on June 11, 1964, in London, England.

With many black and white pictures printed on couché paper. "This is the account of the search for a quiet retreat in which to learn the art of meditation, that is, of how to still the thoughts and find the insight that lies beyond intellect. It tells of the ultimate finding of such a retreat at the Maha Bodhi Meditation Centre in Burma, and of life at this and other Burmese meditation centres."
Some foxing on the first pages and at a few margins, a dent on the front cover. Otherwise, no marking after the title page, pages are mostly clean and the text blocks are brights. Pictures are good. A rare account of a travel to the now Myanmar mountains in good condition.

"This book presents a theoretical framework to discuss how governments coordinate budgeting decisions. There are two modes of fiscal governance conducive to greater fiscal discipline, a mode of delegation and a mode of contracts. These modes contrast with a fiefdom form of governance, in which the decision-making process is decentralized. An important insight is that the effectiveness of a given form of fiscal governance depends crucially upon the underlying political system. Delegation functions well when there are few, or no, ideological differences among government parties, whereas contracts are effective when there are many such differences. Empirically, delegation and contract states perform better than fiefdom states if they match the underlying political system. Additional chapters consider why countries have the fiscal institutions that they do, fiscal governance in Central and Eastern Europe, and the role of such institutions in the European Union." Book II was written at the beginning of the 1903, and has not until now appeared in any form. The first page shows the title and author's name, all other pages feature an upper hole to hand the calendar on a wall or other support. Numerous black-and-white photos. This is the editor's presentation of the artist and his work: "Tiradentes, mg, 1980. Lives and works at Rio de Janeiro. Represented by the gallery Athena Contemporânea. Recent individual solo shows: Memória menor [mam Rio, 2018], The Fool’s Year [Athena Contemporânea, Rio de Janeiro, rj, sox, Berlin, 2017]. Participou da/ participated in 29º Bienal de São Paulo [2010], ii Frestras Trienal de Piracicaba [2017]. The artist has the newspaper [cutouts, photos, etc.] as an essential source in his production. From the collection of images of protests in different newspapers [the collection from the artist is long-standing and is constantly expanding], Matheus elaborates a calendar. But the artist extracts the phrases from the banners and flags and substitutes them for the inscription 1 April 2017."

The book recalls the difficult arrival and settlement of Eastern European Jews, by the beginning and middle of the twentieth century, in the most southern state of Brazil. The author, Moacyr Jaime Scliar (1937-2011), spent most of his life in Porto Alegre. A thick octavo volume, 234 x 150 mm, 484 pp. Hardcover, modern half-leather binding, authors' name and main title written in gold on the spine, four raised bands. More commonly known as the Federalist Papers, this text includes 85 essays, most of which were originally published in New York newspapers under the pseudonym "Publius." This "New Edition" identifies the authors of the individual papers, and the "numbers written by Mr. Madison corrected by himself." It has been called the "most famous and influential American political work". Howes H114; Sabin 23981. Name handwritten with blue ink on the top of the title page, foxing on the first page and then lightly scattered through, dampening on the margins with all text square and intact. Not ex-library, has only belonged to private collectors.
A rare, suitable copy of one of the most important texts ever written in the history of the United States in its Glazier edition.

Signed Autograph by Nat King Cole
This is a 17-pages softcover document AUTOGRAPHED by Jazz legend Nat King Cole (1919-1965). Penned by him with blue ball pen on the front cover. A 250 x 158 mm brochure in Portuguese with a black and white photograph of the legendary jazzman on the cover. Nat King Cole performed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the renowned hotel Copacabana Palace in Abril 1959, from the 13th to the 19th. Presented by Carlos Machado (1908-1992) and the charity Pro Matre. The inside describes who Machado and King Cole are, with many ads and black-and-white illustrations. Of note: a picture of Cole with Sammy Davis, Harry Belafonte, Frank Sinatra and other stars. He is even shown looking at Da Vinci's Mona Lisa in France! Very little wear and tear/foxing on the covers. Yellowed margins inside. King Cole's dedication is very legible and easy to recognize. VG-.
Not only is this a rare signature from a short-lived legend, this is also a rare document from one of the few performances he did in Brazil!
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

A small in-16 booklet of 145 x 97 mm, 105 pp. Black half-leather with an embossed title piece on the front cover, both covers adorned with marbled papers and with small, finely gilt-tooled stylised fleurons. Laminated covers. Decorated with an ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING on the page facing the title page. Beautiful drawing of a man in Middle Eastern clothes leaning on vessels with a long pipe at hand and a voluminous turban on his head. Not signed, unknown author. A gem of a book for a piece of immortal poetry.
Toned pages, solid binding. Some loss of color on the spine, otherwise in very good condition. The inside is profusely decorated with head and bottom bands as well as varied flower headpieces above every poem.

Two octavo volumes, 210 x 150 mm, Intentions featuring 237 pages and Poems in Prose 307. Rebound in modern leather, four raised bands, "The Writings of Oscar Wilde" and then book name being stamped in gold. Two gilt headbands on the top and bottom of the spine. Original full chocolate maroquine leather boards preserved with gilt ornamented caissons. Gilt leather continues behind the boards with dark green silky endsheets. Top edges gilt. Headbands. Set number written in red, ornamented collection title page, book title page, table of illustrations (engravings) and contents at the beginning of each book. Intentions contains four illustrations and the following texts: The Decay of Living; Pen, Pencil, and Poison; The Critic as Artist. Poems in Prose contains six illustrations and the following texts: The Artist; The Door of God; The Disciple; The Master; The House of Judgment; The Teacher of Wisdom; The Priest and the Acolyte; Rose-leaf and Apple-leaf; Some Cruelties of Prison Life; Lecture on the English Renaissance; Wilde v. Whistler; The Rise of Historical Criticism; The Truth of Masks. All illustrations protected with silk paper.
These are beautiful copies of an extremely hard to find edition. All silk pages are intact. Some rubbing on the edges of the covers, otherwise fine condition.

Democracy as Fetish

With unflinching resolve, this book probes the theory of democracy and how the left and right are fascinated by it. In this innovative multidisciplinary study, Ralph Cintron provides sustained analysis of our political discourse. He shows not only how the rhetoric of democracy produces strong desires for social order, global wealth, and justice but also how these desires cannot be satisfied. Throughout his discussion, Cintron includes ethnographic research from fieldwork conducted over the course of twenty years in the Latino neighborhoods of Chicago, where he observes both citizens and the undocumented looking to democracy to fulfill their highest aspirations. Politicians hand out favors to the elite, developers strong-arm aldermen, and the disenfranchised have little redress. The problem, Cintron argues, is that the conditions required to put democracy into practice—territory, a bordered nation-state, citizens, property—are constituted by inequality and violence, because there is no inclusivity that does not also exclude. Hardcover, rebound recently in half leatherette (rather percaline) of a creamy tone, name, title and year embossed in bright copper on the spine, four nerves and three fleurons in bright copper too. Marble off-white/grey papers on the covers. Title page, Dedication "To the Sea-Faring Part of Great Britain and Ireland" by the anonymous translator (per ESTC N68849, the translator is George Shelvocke). Errata page before the text. Headband and an ornated initial letter at the beginning of the text, a tailpiece at the end. Two pages of catalogue of the books printed for J. Bateley after the text. Du Guay-Trouin was undoubtedly one of the most famous naval officers of his time, active from the end of the 17th to the beginning of the 18th century. In writing the manuscript of his memoirs, which he wished to be published only after his death, he wanted to establish the truth about the naval battles that occurred during his expeditions.
Pages yellowed and with occasional spotting and discolouration. Otherwise, a good copy.

Contents listed at the beginning of the book, with a foreword of Maurício Novis Botelho, then chairman of the Board of Directors of Embraer. Lavishly illustrated throughout. Text written in two or three columns per page. This is THE reference book about Brazilian aircraft making. From Santos-Dumont's experiments in France and Brazil to Embraer's global successes in the 2000s, Aircraft Building describes it in painstaking detail while outlaying an engaging account.
Quite a rare book outside of Brazil despite having been written in English.

With title, author's name and editor's name on spine. Signed by author on free end paper. Illustrated with numerous black and white pictures. This is a series of orchestra conductor's profiles sorted by alphabetical order. An interesting, perhaps even encyclopedical reading for the connoisseurs of classical music. Cloth shows some defect at the bottom of the spine and front cover, some foxing on the first pages, otherwise a good copy. Other pages are clean and the binding is sturdy.
A rare signature from the important historian Robin May, who also authored Operamania, Theatremania, Who was Shakespeare?, A Concise Encyclopedia of the Theatre and several books on American history.

Small in-4, 260 x 200 mm. Edited work from the original text of 1622 with introduction, notes and appendix by James A. Williamson. Book deals with the travels and observations of Sir Richard Hawkins in the late 16th century. Seal of the Brazilian physician, scientist, politician and chronicler, Artur Hehl Neiva, former owner of this copy, on page XIX of the introduction and on page 17 of the text.
A well preserved copy. Pages slightly yellowed. A few insect holes in the initial pages, always outside the text. Solitary hole in the lower margin follows and page 52 of the introduction. Editorial binding in good condition but with some dirt from time and some insect holes. Stamp of the (Brazilian) Cândido Mendes Colleges dated 1972 pp. 24-25.
