(1748)

‎Voyage Around the World in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. Compiled from papers and other material and published under his direction by Richard Walter, M.A.‎

‎London, John and Paul Knapton, 1748. Book in English. Third edition mentioned, published the same year as the original edition. A thick octavo volume of 21 x 13.5 cm for 548 pp. Bound and restored at a later time. Bound in full grained tan leather, spine with thin raised bands, author's name and title in gilt printed characters with gilt fillets, gilt fleurons, year at the foot, gilt frames with floral motifs on the covers. Gilt floral motifs on the internal borders of the endpapers, marbled colored guards in tawny tones. Headbands. Restored title and dedication pages, Summary, Introduction. "At the time of the voyage, Britain was at war with Spain. Richard Walter was the Chaplain of his Majesty's ship the Centurion commanded by Lord George Anson, which was sent on the mission to capture or disrupt possessions in the Pacific Ocean held by the Spanish Empire, during which the ship circumnavigated the world. Diseases caused a considerable loss of life; only 188 men survived of the 1,854 who started the voyage. The great interest in the text led to four editions published in 1748."

‎Please note that the two folding maps at the end of the work are missing. Complete text, solid binding. Bottom of the side edge blackened, marginalia in blue pencil pp. 70-1. ‎A Voyage Round the World in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV‎

‎London, John and Paul Knapton in Ludgate Street, 1748. This is a subscriber copy, so the real first edition of Anson's book. A brick of a book with 215 x 260 mm, 80 mm thick. 33 unpaginated pp. at the beginning, 417 (2) pp. Contemporary thick binding of a deep purple hue, four nerves on the spine, three black title pieces with author's name, book title and year in gold print characters. Includes the list of subscribers, p. 319 incorrectly designated as p. 219, two pages of instructions to the binder at the end of the book. With 42 copper plates: 14 maps and 28 engravings, all folding (38 having dimensions close to the book itself or to unfold horizontally and 3 being large folding maps). Comes with a sliding protective case. This is a copy of George Anson's account of his circumnavigation voyage. Complete with all the features which are often missing or signal a later edition. A lively tale of hardship, courage, curiosity, risk-taking and doing the impossible: overtaking Spain on the Peru coast, taking a Spanish galleon and completing the travel around the world with an awesome booty and an epic story to tell. The victory of Anson's Centurion launched the age of British dominance over the oceans and paved the way for a Victorian empire where "the sun never sets."‎

‎The folding engraving facing p. 73 has some discrete tape repair on the margin and the engraving facing p. 201 has the very extremity of its margin starting to crumble. Aside from that, a very good copy. More pictures on demand.‎

‎George H. Haynes‎

Reference : 0058

(1938)

‎The Senate of the United States In Theory and Practice [2 vol.]‎

‎Cambridge (MA), Houghton Mifflin Co. / Riverside Press, 1938. First edition of Georges Haynes' classic. Two octavo volumes, 220 x 150 mm each. Both volumes share the same pagination, the first having 567 pp. and second starting p. 568 to end at p. 1118. Hardcover, original editor's red cloth, with author's name in gold and title within a black lozenge on spine. Small paper of the "Livraria Agir Editôra", a Rio de Janeiro bookstore, tipped in at the beginning of the first volume. Each vol. has a black-and-white picture as frontispiece. Both volumes show several black-and-white illustrations. Some yellowing and foxing throughout with most pages being toned. All legible, sturdy binding, no bad smell, not ex-library. PP. 340 to 363 (first volume) have slightly folded corners with no damage to the text. "The 1938 publication of George Haynes’ two-volume The Senate of the United States: Its History and Practice instantly made Haynes the nation’s leading academic authority on that institution. Reviewers routinely ranked Haynes’ work with Charles Warren’s monumental three-volume The Supreme Court in United States History, published 15 years earlier. While others had produced major studies examining individual areas of Senate activity, and while Lindsay Rogers had created an extended essay on the institution in defense of unlimited debate, Haynes was the first to attempt a comprehensive history." (Excerpt from the summary on the U.S. Senate's website)‎

‎A good copy of a very tough finding. Haynes' book has become so rare even its 1960 reprint by Russell and Russell sells above $250, the first edition being often off-market and only to be consulted at political science or academic libraries.‎

Original burgundy half-leather, raised bands, author's name, title and vol. number stamped in gold on the spine, marbled endpapers. From the library of the Instituto dos Surdos Mudos (Institute for the deaf and mute) of Brazil with only one discrete stamp on the title page, no other library marking. A History of the Reform Bills of 1866 and 1867 was acknowledged by the author as a partisan Liberal work. It was brought out in time for the 1868 United Kingdom General Election. ‎James Bryce‎

Reference : 480

(1888)

‎The American Commonwealth‎

‎London and New York, MacMillan, 1888. Three volumes bound in full vellum leather. First edition. Three delicately bound 155 x 220 mm (6" x 8.5") volumes of (xxxii) 592, 683 and 699 pp. Full caramel vellum leather, intricately ornated spines with 5 nerves, gilded frames and boxes containing lush greenery-inspired patterns and fleurons, all gilded, double titlepiece with the book title, author's name and volume Roman number on dark red and anthracite backgrounds, gilded floral frieze on the tails. Covers with double gilded frames and tiny corner flowers. All fore-edges colored in a mostly blue polychromia with marbled red veins. Gilded roulette work on the edges of the covers and pastedowns, colored endpapers. Unidentified ex-libris on the first pastedown bearing the motto "Ab Multis Ad Unum." With an unfolding map of "The Growth of the United States" at the beginning of the first volume. Table of contents at the beginning and index at the end of each volume. First volume: The National Government. Preface. Second volume: The State Government and the Party System. Third volume: Public Opinion, Illustrations and Reflections, Social Institutions. This book is not an encyclopaedia of the institutions of the American Republic, even though it may look like it is. Actually, James Bryce talks about the real workings of the institutions: parties, bosses, the spoil system and the public opinion. It shows an America already different from what the mere Constitution says. He compares the British monarchy with the American federal republic, the democratic versus lord elites and the centralization vs local power dynamics. By doing so, James Bryce predates the sociology of Robert Mitchels and Max Weber while maintaining the magnitude and depth of a true treatise. An analytical tour de force, worthy of a serious Americana collection.‎

‎Light rubbing on some of the edges, the hinge of the 1st volume front cover is a bit frail, robust binding, interior is clean and in very good condition. A splendid set in its original intricate binding.‎

‎Artaud and the Gnostic Drama‎

‎United Kingdom, Scarlet Imprint, 2020. Limited to 51 copies of 278 x 192 mm, 261 pp. Half-bound in black goatskin, with yellow silk boards, black marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, finished with a silk ribbon and presented in a lined slip case, this copy being #50. "In Artaud and the Gnostic Drama, Jane Goodall offers a reappraisal of the importance of Antonin Artaud (18961948), mythologised as an icon of failure and madness, and examines the intricate parallels between his heretical dramaturgy and the heresies of ancient Gnosticism. The book situates Artaud, as the most extravagant of heretics, in company with the Gnostics whose speculations served to define heresy in the beginnings of the Christian tradition. Artaud subscribed to the Gnostic idea that the sensible world was created by a demiurge who was “imperfect, possibly evil and depraved.” His cosmology is inherently dramatic, setting creature against creator, force against form, matter against spirit, pious knowledge against heretical gnosis. Jane Goodall argues that major post-structuralist critics such as Derrida, Deleuze, and Foucault, who have enlisted Artaud in their own anti-orthodoxies, have refused to pay attention to the terms of his own heresy. In this refusal, they display an anxiety towards the gnostic drama and its heresies, which mount an assault that may be more powerful than their own upon the founding tenets of western thought." (Publisher's abstract) This work was first published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford in 1994. The text has been lightly revised for this second edition and is illustrated. Unread and kept spotless. A fine copy.‎

‎Brasil. Two Decades, Two Capitals / Duas décadas, duas capitais / Deux décennies, deux capitales‎

Trilingual book with text in English, Portuguese and French. First edition. An almost square oblong book of 22.5 x 23 cm for 252 pp. Photos of Brazil during a time of thorough transformation, from the 1950s when Rio de Janeiro was still the capital to the end of the construction of Brasília, capital designed by legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer. Forewords by Sandra Gonczarowska Mussi and Andrey Rosenthal Schlee. "Through his photographs, Jankiel Gonczarowska offers us fragments of a reality organized and reflected in his art from a striking personal vision about which he confirms, in his own words, that to be a good photographer you have to dedicate yourself to the profession, get in touch with people before photographing them and travel the world... My goal in creating this book was to make everyone discover this human journey marked by optimism and the history of a better Brazil, at a time when the difference between classes was striking, but each class had its beauty." (Preface) The author had the opportunity to rub shoulders to Niemeyer, President Juscelino Kubitschek and visit several places in Brasília then closed to the public, such as the Alvorada Palace. The photos suddenly change from black and white to color during the 1960s. A remarkable album, rare above the Equator.‎

‎Iracema or Honey-Lips: A Legend of Brazil‎

‎London: Bickers & Son, 1886. First English edition of this acclaimed Brazilian romance. Translated by Isabel Burton. Slim in-12 volume. 179 x 125 mm, (vii) 101 pp. Bound in half algae green morocco, two raised bands, five gilded bands, name printed vertically in gilt print letters, date on the bottom. Marbled papers with a touch of bright copper on covers, multiple white pages on both ends. White and green headbands. Title page, Translator's preface, Historical argument by the author. Each chapter is merely "Chapter XX", no table of contents. "I cannot allow my readers to remain ignorant of the name of Senhor J. de Alencar, the author of this and several other works; for he deserves to be as well known in England as in Brazil, and it must be the result of the usual modesty of a really clever man that he is not so. He is their first prose and romance writer." (Translator's preface) "In 1603, Pero Coelho, a gentleman of Parahyba, then already belonging to the Portuguese, arrived at the mouth of the river Jaguaribe in Ceará, with a command of 80 colonists and 800 Indians. He there founded the first settlement in Ceará, and called it Nova Lisboa. He was abandoned by his comrades when a certain João Soromenho was sent to him with reinforcements... He did not respect even the Indians of the Jaguaribe river, who were friendly to the Portuguese. This proved the downfall of the growing settlement: the natives resented such tyranny. Pero Coelho, with his wife and young children, was compelled to fly by land to his own province." (Alencar's Historical argument)‎

‎West of Slavery: The Southern Dream of a Transcontinental Empire‎

‎The University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 2021. First edition. Octavo. Softcover. Very Good Plus. A very small dent at the upper back corner, otherwise unread and like new.‎

‎"When American slaveholders looked west in the mid-nineteenth century, they saw an empire unfolding before them. They pursued that vision through war, diplomacy, political patronage, and perhaps most effectively, the power of migration. By the eve of the Civil War, slaveholders and their allies had transformed the southwestern quarter of the nation--California, New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Utah--into an appendage of the South's plantation states. Across this vast swath of the map, white southerners extended the institution of African American chattel slavery while also defending systems of Native American bondage. This surprising history uncovers the Old South in unexpected places, far west of the cotton fields and sugar plantations that exemplify the region. Slaveholders' western ambitions culminated in a coast-to-coast crisis of the Union. By 1861, the rebellion in the South inspired a series of separatist movements in the Far West. Even after the collapse of the Confederacy, the threads connecting South and West held, undermining the radical promise of Reconstruction. Kevin Waite brings to light what contemporaries recognized but historians have described only in part: The struggle over slavery played out on a transcontinental stage. Examines the threads connecting South and West America during the slaveholding era, and that undermined the radical promise of Reconstruction. Kevin Waite brings to light what contemporaries recognised but historians have described only in part: The struggle over slavery played out on a transcontinental stage." (Summary)‎

A major figure in the African-American cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance, the poet and novelist Langston Hughes (1901-1967) wrote works depicting the lives of black proletarians shared between joys, disillusions, hope, etc. all tinged with jazz and blues. "Through his work, he sought to show the importance of a "black consciousness" and a cultural nationalism that unites men rather than sets them against each other. This pride was subsequently taken up by many men of letters such as Jacques Roumain, Nicolás Guillén, Léopold Sédar Senghor and Aimé Césaire." (Wikipedia)‎

‎Waves of the Blue River: Survival and triumph through one of history's greatest crimes in China‎

‎São Paulo, self-edited, 2017. One octavo softcover book of 228 x 154 mm, 118 pp. Many black and white pictures throughout the book. Translated from Chinese to English by David Curtis Wright with the author's help. SIGNED by the author on the half-title page. A heart-wrenching and powerful story about a Chinese man who overcame many hurdles to escape an authoritarian government to ultimately land in Brazil, where he and his family fared well in peace. "Born in 1933, Li Mu, pseudonym of Dr. Yeung Chi Bor, is a Chinese-Brazilian doctor and acupuncturist. He grew up in the Chinese province of Guangdong under the Chinese Communist Regime. Targeted by the authorities as 'landlords', Yeung and his family were persecuted, defamed, tortured, and had their possessions confiscated. His father was executed and he was sent to labor camps. Throughout his struggle for survival, Yeung bore witness to one of the worst atrocities in history. He ultimately escaped as a refugee into Hong Kong in 1962 and, in 1977, made a great leap into the unknown, immigrating to Brazil at the age of 44. Dr. Yeung has three daughters and one son, and lives with his wife in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais."‎

‎Lord Northbourne‎

Reference : 0254

(1942)

‎Look To The Land‎

‎London, Dent, 1942. 190 x 130 mm, 186 pp. Hardcover with blue cloth, no jacket. Reprint of the 1940 edition. This is a rare copy of the war edition which, due to war restrictions, contains less paper than usual and shows the "Authorized Economy Standard" seal of approval on the first page. "In May 1940, Lord Northbourne’s book ‘Look to the Land’ appeared. He coined the term ‘organic farming’. His book stripped out the prolixity, abstruseness, esotericism and mysticism of Rudolf Steiner, and, with compelling clarity, Lord Northbourne presented a manifesto of organic agriculture. From this point on, biodynamics and organics have developed in parallel, with the general recognition of biodynamics as a particular manifestation of organic agriculture." (John Paull, "The Global Growth and Evolution of Organic Agriculture", p. 5) "Lord Northbourne (1896-1982) was a man of exceptional vision, who already in the 1940s diagnosed in detail the sickness of modern society as stemming from the severance of its organic links with the wholeness of life. A leading figure in the early organic farming movement, his writings profoundly affected such other pioneers as Sir Albert Howard, Rolf Gardiner, Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, and H. J. Massingham. His path led him on to a profound study of comparative religion, traditional metaphysics, and the science of symbols, which he employed in incisive observations on the character of modern society. His later writings exercised considerable influence on his younger contemporaries E. F. Schumacher and Thomas Merton, and in many ways anticipate the essays of Wendell Berry." (Later summary of the book by Angelico Press) Walter Ernest Christopher James, 4th Baron Northbourne (1896-1982) was a precursor of what is now known as organic agriculture. He translated to English several works by Perennialists or Traditionalists René Guénon, Fritschof Schuon and Titus Burckhardt, and contributed frequently to the quarterly journal Studies in Comparative Religions. According to Wikipedia, "Lord Northbourne's garden at Elizabethan Northbourne Court near Deal in Kent, set within the standing former outbuildings (the manor house burned in the 18th century) and upon ancient terracing, nurtured for a century, is reputed one of the finest in England; it is not generally open to the public."‎

‎W Walce O Wolnosc / In Fight For Freedom / In Lotta Per La Libertà + three original Polish WW2 pictures, including a photograph of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski signed by himself‎

‎This is a set which belonged to Janusz Gluchowski, a high-ranking Polish military officer at the time of the WW2. The set contains three original B&W pictures. First one: undated postcard showing Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, signed by himself in black ink, 8.5 x 13.5 cm, with two embossed mentions above and below. Second picture: undated postcard showing Poland President Gabriel Narutowicz, with a written mention on the back. Third picture: 11 x 15.5 cm photograph. General Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski inspecting a British Cromwell tank, accompanied by Polish officers of the 3rd Armored Regiment (3 puk pancerny). The image was captured during an official ceremony in the city of Kelso, Scotland, in the immediate post-war period, on June 15, 1945. The scene shows the General in an observation position, climbing onto the tank while surrounded by Polish soldiers. The tank corresponds to a British model widely used by Polish forces in exile during the Western European campaign. On the reverse, the following handwritten inscriptions appear: VI 1945, Kelso. N. Wódz gen. Bór-Komorowski dokonuje inspekcji 3 p. panc. N. Wódz w towarzystwie bryg. puku na czogu." / June 15, 1945, Kelso The book is an illustrated three-languages (Polish, English and Italian) set commemorating the struggles of the Polish II Corps. Edited by Wyda Rererat [Referat] Kultury i Prasy Kresowej Dywizji Piechoty in Rome, 1945. Oblong book of 21 x 19 cm, unpaginated (144 pp.). Cover detached. Endpapers and first page show Janusz Gluchowski's stamp. In publisher's photographically illustrated wrappers. Each page contains a photographic image or a photomontage accompanied with a short text in three languages. Front cover shows some wear and tear, the binding is a bit loose - we would advise having this book bound. The Polish II Corps was a major tactical and operational unit recruited from Polish deportees in the Soviet Gulags in 1943. First they fought in the Middle East, and in 1944 February they were transferred to Italy and as independent part of the British Army to fight in the Italian campaign, in the battles of Monte Cassino and Ancona and also the Battle of Bologna during the final offensive in Italy in 1945. The book goes through the story of Poland and the later established Polish II Corps, starting with the German and Soviet occupation in 1939. It shows the deportation of Poles to forced labour to the Gulag and, after the Polish-Russian Military Agreement in 1941, the establishment of the Polish Army on Soviet soil, also their military training and their fights in various battles. Janusz Julian Gluchowski was a Major General in the Polish Army during the Second Polish Republic. He was born on August 6, 1888, in Bukowa. He fought in the Polish Legions in World War I, the Polish-Ukrainian War, the Polish-Soviet War, and the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, Slovakia, and the Soviet Union in 1939, which culminated in the start of World War II. In his adolescence, he attended high school in Czstochowa. In 1905, he became a member of the Combat Organization of the Polish Socialist Party and was wounded in the hand during an attack near Czstochowa. To avoid arrest by the Russian authorities, he left for Belgium, where he studied at the University of Liège. He returned to divided Poland around 1910 and settled in Austrian Galicia. In 1912 he graduated from the Officers' School of the Riflemen's Association in Stroza, near Krakow. In the early hours of August 1914, he commanded a platoon in Oleandria and was Wadysaw Belina-Pramowski's representative during the legendary attack of the so-called Seven Lancers of Belina (Uaska siódemka). On August 6th, together with the First Cadre Company, he left Krakow and marched to Miechów. In October 1914 he was promoted to Lieutenant (Poruchik) and, in November 1916, to Rittmeister (Cavalry Master). Until 1917 he served in the First Uhlan Regiment of the Polish Legions. After the Oath Crisis (Kryzys przysigowy) he was interned first in Fort Beniaminów and later in Werl. Released in October 1918, he went to Lublin, where, in early November, he formed the Third Ulan Regiment (later renamed the Seventh Ulan Regiment of Lublin). Along with his unit, he fought in the Polish-Soviet War. On May 29, 1920, he was promoted to Polkovnik. He was transferred in July 1920 to Eastern Galicia, taking command of the First Cavalry Brigade, fighting against the Soviets in Galicia and Volhynia. After the war, he remained in this position until 1925, when he was transferred to the Fourth Cavalry Brigade. Promoted to Brigadier General on March 16, 1927. Appointed commander of the Center for Higher Military Studies on June 4, 1930, and three years later, after the death of General Stanislaw Tessaro, he was appointed commander of Military District X in Przemyl. In October 1935, he became Deputy Minister of Military Affairs. In the early days of the 1939 invasion of Poland, Gluchowski ordered General Walerian Czuma to prepare the defense of Warsaw. In mid-September 1939, he fled to Romania. After his escape, he managed to travel to the Middle East and, in January 1941, received orders to go to London. In October 1941, he was appointed Commander of the Training Brigade stationed in Scotland. On September 23, 1943, he was appointed commander of all Polish Army units stationed in Great Britain, except the First Independent Parachute Brigade, which remained under the authority of the Commander-in-Chief. He was promoted to Major General on June 1, 1945. He decided not to return to Soviet-occupied Poland and remained in Great Britain. He frequently criticized the Soviet regime and the Soviet occupation authorities in postwar Poland. Furthermore, he was one of the founders and president of the Jozef Pilsudski Institute in London. He was, therefore, an active member of the Polish community in Great Britain. He was president and honorary member of several Polish veterans' organizations. He died on June 11, 1964, in London, England.‎
