‎Quel peut bien être le lien unissant ou rapprochant les Sages du talmud et les philosophes juifs du Moyen Age d'hommes aux oeuvres fécondes comme Sigmund Freud, le père de la psychanalyse, Joseph Roth et Stefan Zweig, trois hommes de sciences et de lettres autrichiens, chassés de leur pays et condamnés à finir leurs jours en exil ? Tous étaient juifs (au moins de naissance) mais ont vécu leur Judaïsme de manière fondamentalement différente. C'est cette parenté, cette nature du lien que Maurice-Ruben Hayoun tente de mettre à nu dans une synthèse originale sur une religion culture multimillénaire qui se veut aussi un mode de vie, un peuple, une nationalité. Qu'est-ce que le judaïsme, qui est juif, comment le devient-on ? Autant de question auxquelles on tente d'apporter des réponses, notamment dans la partie intitulée La cristallisation de l'identité juive. A l'origine, lorsque les Hébreux et à leur suite les juifs, résidaient sur le sol natal, toutes les parties constitutives de leur essence étaient inextricablement imbriquées au point de rendre quasi-impossible le démêlage de cet écheveau. Les deux destructions du Temple de Jérusalem et l'exil d'abord en Babylonie et pour finir, sur toute la surface de la terre, ont brutalement mis fin à cette plénitude.
