Nouvelle édition revue, corrigée et augmentée de la thèse américaine de l'auteur, “Conjecture, Propaganda and Deceit, and the Spanish Civil War” (Stanford, 1968) — "L'auteur de ce livre sur “Les Francais et la guerre d'Espagne” a accompli un travail considérable. II a dépouillé systématiquement la presse française de 1936 à 1939, toute la presse parisienne et une importante partie de la presse provinciale, notamment celle du Sud-Ouest ; c'est la base essentielle de sa documentation. II faut y ajouter les archives des départements frontaliers, de l'Aude, des Pyrénées-Orientales, de l'Ariège, de la Haute-Garonne et des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, qui se sont révélées d'une richesse inégale, mais parfois très grande ; il s'agit, pour l'essentiel, d'une étude de presse, avec tout l'intérêt que comporte un tel travail. (...) Le problème essentiel est de savoir si l'analyse de la presse rend suffisamment compte de l'état d'esprit des Français. Pendant ces années 1936-1939, on peut bien parler de crise passionnelle dans l'opinion française. Par l'âpreté de leurs commentaires, par la violence de leurs polémiques, dont le livre de David W. Pike fournit de multiples exemples, les journaux en rendent bien compte. (...) Le livre s'ouvre par un chapitre d'analyse de la presse française, très précis et très utile. (...) First Edition / First issue of this pamphlet. Printed by R. Cullum of Exeter. Sewn. No outside binding. Pages 1-16 are comprised of Jones' speech, and pages 17-24 are notes in favour of Emancipation. The outside pages (title and rear page - there is no cover) are a little darkened and have some markings to them. A little edgewear to the pages, with slight creasing to the corners. Internally clean and tidy with intermittent foxing only. This copy bears the ownership signature of Captain La Roche. Probably Henry La Roche, of Halberton, Devon. Captain of the Royal Navy and J.P. He had served in various vessels during the wars with France from 1792, obtaining the rank of Commander in 1804 and Post Captain in 1806. He died in Devon in 1832. See Gentleman's Magazine. Vol 102, Pt. 1. 1832. 24 pages. Although a Church of England curate, Jones (1791-1857) was strongly in favour of Catholic Emancipation. As he put it, he would "rather drag out my existence within the walls of a dungeon, than give up the maintenance of the sacred cause of HUMAN LIBERTY." Such opinions cost him advancement in the church, although the Earl of Shrewsbury eventually gave him a benefice. Jones was born at Chudleigh, Devon, where no doubt he was aware at least of the Clifford family. Jones was also an antiquarian, writing several books on the history, and natural history of Devon.

First edition. Hardback in darkened red buckram, with black decoration and gilt titles to front board and spine. Boards slightly rubbed at edges, and sun faded to spine. W. H. Smith library embossed stamp to top of brown FFEP. Neat owner's name to half title. Another to top of title page. Some light foxing to first twenty pages, or so. Binding a little loose, but holding. Reasonably good condition. Dedicated to London's Protestant dissenters and their places of worship. xvi, 477, [1] pp. 195 x 135 mm (7٠x 5Πinches). .
