Le président de la République autrichienne, ancien secrétaire général des Nations unies, est-il un criminel de guerre ? Malgré ses dénégations répétées, il est acquis que Waldheim a menti – ne serait-ce que par omission. Sa biographie officielle a été tronquée, afin d'effacer un certain passé. Sa carrière militaire ne s'est pas terminée par une blessure sur le front russe en décembre 1941. Dès 1942, le lieutenant Waldheim se trouvait dans les Balkans. Même s'il n'a pas participé personnellement aux pires exactions commises par l'occupant – suppression de villages entiers, expédition de milliers de soldats italiens désarmés dans les camps de travail du IIIe Reich, exécution et déportation de Juifs et de Yougoslaves – Waldheim a su et il s'est tu. Comment a-t-il pu, après la guerre, échapper au filtre des commissions de dénazification pour entreprendre une carrière de diplomate, avant d'accéder à la charge suprême en Autriche ? Quelles complicités, à l'étranger et dans son pays, ont permis cette conspiration du silence ? Au moment où l'affaire Waldheim rebondit, l'auteur a rassemblé les pièces du puzzle, remontant jusqu'à la jeunesse et à l'enfance de Kurt Waldheim. Son enquête rigoureuse, la plus complète à ce jour, fait déjà autorité pour éclairer les "années obscures" de l'homme qui se voulait sans passé...
