‎First edition. In the early years of quantum mechanics several distinct formulations were developed Heisenberg's matrix mechanics, Schrödinger's wave mechanics, and Dirac's more general transformation theory. However these theories lacked strict mathematical rigor (only much later through Schwartz's theory of distributions did Dirac's theory achieve this). Quantum mechanics is one of the fields of science which was fortunate to attract the attention of a mathematician of von Neumann's character. Von Neumann showed, in a paper published 1927, how generalized infinite-dimensional Euclidean spaces (function spaces) and linear operators provide the proper mathematical framework for quantum mechanics. Von Neumann was strongly influenced by Hilbert's program of axiomatizing the fields of science. The axiomatic approach which von Neumann takes in his theory has ever since dominated modern physics and functional analysis, and it was von Neumann who coined the term 'Hilbert space'. Von Neumann's work in this field culminated in this monograph which in addition to the earlier paper includes his important considerations, inspired by Bohr and Heisenberg, regarding the problem of measurement, in particular von Neumann's disproof of hidden variables.‎

Il a apporté d'importantes contributions en mécanique quantique, en analyse fonctionnelle, en théorie des ensembles, en informatique, en sciences économiques et dans beaucoup d'autres domaines des mathématiques et de la physique. Il a de plus participé aux programmes militaires américains. - En 1900, David Hilbert présente sa liste des 23 problèmes dont le sixième porte sur l'axiomatisation de la physique. Dans les années 1930, la mécanique quantique est peu acceptée par les physiciens, pour des raisons tout autant philosophiques que techniques. D'un côté, le non-déterminisme quantique n'a pas été réduit en dépit des efforts d'Albert Einstein, d'un autre côté, la théorie est sous-tendue par deux formalisations heuristiques, concurrentes et équivalentes avec, d'une part, la formalisation matricielle de Werner Heisenberg et, d'autre part, l'approche par les équations différentielles ondulatoires d'Erwin Schrödinger. Il manque une formulation mathématique unique, unificatrice et satisfaisante de la théorie. Von Neumann, en 1926, s'attaque à l'axiomatisation de la mécanique quantique et réalise rapidement qu'un système quantique peut être considéré comme un vecteur dans un espace de Hilbert analogue de dimension 6N (où N est le nombre de particules, trois coordonnées spatiales et trois coordonnées canoniques). Les quantités physiques traditionnelles (position et énergie) peuvent être remplacées par des opérateurs linéaires dans ces espaces. La physique quantique est désormais réductible aux mathématiques des opérateurs hermitiens linéaires dans un espace de Hilbert. Par exemple, le fameux principe d'incertitude de Heisenberg selon lequel on ne peut déterminer à la fois la position et la vitesse d'une particule équivaut à la non-commutativité des deux opérateurs correspondants. Cette formulation mathématique réconcilie Heisenberg et Schrödinger, et von Neumann publie en 1932 son classique Les Fondements mathématiques de la mécanique quantique (Mathematische Grundlagen der Quantenmechanik). Si cette axiomatisation plaît énormément aux mathématiciens pour son élégance, les physiciens lui préfèrent celle de Paul Dirac, publiée en 1930 et qui s'appuie sur une étrange fonction, la fonction d de Dirac (laquelle est en fait une distribution, au sens que formalisera Laurent Schwartz quelques années plus tard). Cette théorie sera durement critiquée par von Neumann. ‎First edition of the Erkenntnis-volume from the Königsberg congress of 1930, where Gödel introduced his incompleteness results and Carnap, Heyting and von Neumann held the seminal papers (here printed for the first time) that ended the ""Grundlagenkrise der Mathematik"" (foundational crisis of mathematics). It is also in this volume that the seminal discussions following Gödel's announcements of his results are printed for the first time (""Discussion on the Foundation of Mathematics"", between Gödel, von Neumann, Carnap, Hahn, Reidemeister, Heyting, and Scholz) (Gödel, Collected Works, 1931a) as well as the article which inaugurated the logicist foundation of mathematics, in which the modern sense of ""logicism"" is introduced (Carnap's contribution).In Königsberg in September 1930, Gödel presented his incompleteness results, a landmark in mathematical logic, at the second congress of scientific epistemology, -a congress which proved to be a turning point in the history of philosophical and mathematical logic. It is the papers presented at this congress which are printed in the present volume, apart from the contributions by Gödel and Scholtz (which were printed elsewhere) together with the seminal discussions that followed the presentation of the papers. The groundbreaking papers that are printed here include Carnap's ""Die Logizistische Grundlegung der Mathematik"", which furthermore introduced the modern sense of the term ""logicism"", Arend Heyting's ""Die intuitionistische Grundlegung der Mathematik"" and Johann von Neumann's ""Die formalistische Grundlegung der Mathematik"" as well as papers by Neugebauer, Reichenbach and Heisenberg. The present papers, as well as the following discussion, mark a turning point in the history of logic and a cornerstone in the future development of the field. The so-called ""Foundational Crisis of Mathematics"" was a phase within mathematics begun in the early 20th century due to the search for proper foundations of mathematics and the uncertainty of this quest, which was supported by the many difficulties that philosophy of mathematics faced at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century . The crisis took its actual beginning with the publication of Russell's ""principles of Mathematics"" of 1903, culminated in the 1920'ies with the main advocates of Formalism and Intuitionism respectively, Hilbert and Brouwer, in what is called the ""foundational struggle of mathematics"", and ended with the present volume in 1931, following the congress of 1930.With the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry in the 18th century, it became evident that not only one sort of mathematics was possible, and even that some propositions could be true in one mathematical system, but false in another. This was the actual basis for the awareness of a mathematical foundation in the mathematical public, which again was the basis for the fact that the question of the foundation of mathematics could develop -and could develop into an actual crisis. During the first 30 years of the 20th century, almost all great mathematicians worked on their answer to the question of the correct foundation of mathematics, and thus it came to a crisis that developed into a struggle. It is this struggle and crisis that Carnap, Heyting and von Neumann break in 1930, where they present the three great positions of the struggling years: logicism (Carnap), intuitionism (Heyting) and formalism (von Neumann), and it is these three papars that pave the way for the discussion that follows, ""Diskussion zur Grundlegung der Mathematik"", between Gödel, Hahn, Carnap, Heyting, von Neumann, Reidemeister, and Scholz. ‎La découverte d'un document relatif à l'histoire coloniale américaine est assez rare pour que son édition mérite toute notre attention. L'édition française, remarquablement établie par Luis González-R., de l'ouvrage du missionnaire jésuite Joseph Neumann nous révèle un texte d'une exceptionnelle importance historique resté pratiquement inconnu depuis sa parution à Prague en 1730, et dont il n'existe que deux exemplaires à la bibliothèque de l'Université de Vienne. Le Père Neumann naquit à Bruxelles en 1648 et partagea sa jeunesse entre Vienne et la Tchécoslovaquie ; âgé de quinze ans, il demande à entrer à la Compagnie de Jésus. Désigné, sur sa demande, pour les missions de la Nouvelle-Espagne. Il quitta Prague en 1678 et parvint en 1680 à México d'où il partit presque immédiatement pour les missions de la Tarahumara, avec le Père Ratkay. Il atteignit le but de son voyage – la mission de San Borja – en janvier 1681. Sa longue vie de missionnaire devait s'écouler dans cette région dont l'étendue correspond à peu près à l'actuel État de Chihuahua, et plus particulièrement dans les villages de Sisoguichi (du 7 mars 1681 au 25 février 1698) et de Carichi (de 1698 à sa mort, le 1er mai 1732). Cette longue expérience de l'évangélisation et les événements dont il fut le témoin incitèrent le Père Neumann, devenu « Visitador », à rédiger un ouvrage embrassant un siècle de l'histoire du peuple tarahumar (de 1626 à 1724), c'est-à-dire depuis les premiers temps de sa découverte par les Espagnols. A la fois témoin et historien, Neumann nous précise que ses sources furent : « ... ce que j'ai vu de mes propres yeux ou ce que d'autres missionnaires m'ont envoyé par écrit ». (...) Les Espagnols étaient venus dans la Tarahumara à la suite de la découverte des mines d'argent de El Parral, plus tard capitale de la Nouvelle-Biscaye. Ils allaient recruter leur main-d'œuvre dans les missions : « les Indiens, à peine initiés au christianisme et amenés à vivre dans des villages, sont aussitôt appelés par les Espagnols au travail des mines » (p. 169). (...) Neumann nous donne de précieux renseignements sur les techniques et les stratégies guerrières des forces en présence, décrivant les armes des Tarahumars, leurs attaques surprises que la connaissance du terrain rendait particulièrement efficaces, et d'autre part l'armement des soldats espagnols protégés par un vêtement et un casque de cuir qui se voulaient à l'épreuve des flèches. Outre la guerre proprement dite et son cortège d'injustices et de violences, Neumann évoque dans son ouvrage les procédés extrêmes auxquels avaient recours les troupes espagnoles, tels que la destruction des récoltes ou la capture de femmes et d'enfants comme otages... Plus qu'un livre d'histoire « événementielle », “Révoltes des Indiens Tarahumars” est un document précieux qui sert à une meilleure compréhension des rapports et des affrontements entre colonisateurs et colonisés, car son auteur essaie d'analyser les causes d'une hostilité engendrée par deux types de « déstructuration » : destruction des structures religieuses, particulièrement ressentie par les « sorciers », à laquelle s'ajoute l'obligation d'une vie sédentaire employée au service des Espagnols. Disons enfin que l'établissement du texte est à tous égards digne d'éloges : l'édition reproduit l'original latin en regard de la traduction française.
