Scholars have shifted their focus from the post-Cartesian debates on the mind-body problem to earlier discussions of body-body issues or even to the problem of causation as such. ‎ Les Novelle sont l’œuvre principale de Matteo Bandello, publiée en quatre parties, dont les trois premières à Lucques par Vincenzo Busdraghi en 1554; et la quatrième à Lyon par Alessandro Marsili en 1573, après la mort de l’auteur. Au total, on compte 214 nouvelles. "Bandello était Dominicain, il quitta son ordre en 1526 pour entrer au service du lieutenant de François 1er, Cesare Fregoso. À la mort de celui-ci (1541), il suivit sa veuve en France; il fut évêque d'Agen de 1550 à 1555. La production humaniste de Bandello est étroitement liée à sa carrière ecclésiastique, diplomatique et courtisane. La complexité de celle-ci transparaît également dans les dédicaces des 214 nouvelles qui composent son chef-d'œuvre (I quattro libri delle Novelle, Lucques, 1554, et Lyon, 1573). Le recueil est caractérisé par une extrême variété de thèmes et de tons et, si son style est souvent relâché, Bandello excelle à piquer la curiosité de son public.
