‎Vorträge und Aufsätze. - [PRESENTATION-COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COLLECTIONS OF MODERN PHILOSOPHY]‎

‎Pfullingen, Günter Neske, (1954). 8vo. Original full black cloth with white lettering to spine. Very clean, bright, and fresh, also internally. Original orange dust-jacket with black lettering to spine and white lettering to front. Minimal edge wear. An excellent and clean dust-jacket with just minor signs of wear. Very slight soiling to title-page, otherwise no wear or markings to text. Letter from Heidegger inserted to inside of front board. Front free end-paper signed and dated by Heidegger and with an inserted note in ink from the person that Heidegger gave the book to stating that this highly personal memento from his student time in Freiburg and his memorable encounters with Heidegger was given to his son Matthias for his 40th birthday, in 1995. 283, (1) pp. ‎

‎First edition, presentation-copy signed by Heidgger and with an inserted letter, also signed and dated by Heidegger, of this seminal collection of lectures and essays, which was of decisive importance to the immense influence of Heidegger’s thinking upon post World War Europe. This collection of Heidegger’s lectures and essays contains such groundbreaking works as “Die Frage nach der Technik” (The Question Concerning Technology) and “Wissenschaft und Besinnung” (Science and Reflection), “”Dichterisch Wohnet der Mensch…” “, along with other important works written between 1936 and 1953 collected here for the first time. This collection would later be reprinted and serve as volume 7 of Heidegger’s collected works (the Gesamtausgabe). This copy is signed “Martin Heidegger” and dated (1954 – the year of publication) to the front free end-paper, and on the inside of the front board is inserted an autograph signed letter in Heidegger’s hand to “Sehr geehrter Herr Doktor” (honourable doctor), in which Heidegger asks to meet up the following day, suggesting different times of the day. The letter is dated Freiburg 10th of February, 1954, which is two days before Heidegger gave his groundbreaking lecture “The Question Concerning Technology” at the University of Freiburg, suggesting that the letter was given to someone attending the lecture, possibly someone with whom he wanted to discuss it beforehand. “The Question Concerning Technology” still serves as one of the most pertinent philosophical essays of modern time, foreshadowing what is arguably the greatest philosophical and moral dilemmas that we struggle with today due to modern technology. Heidegger begins with asking the question what technology is, in an attempt to fully understand its essence and to ultimately prepare a free relationship to it – a theme that could hardly be more relevant today. “As relevant now as ever before, this accessible collection is an essential landmark in the philosophy of science from one of the most profound thinkers of the twentieth century (New York Times). The advent of machine technology has given rise to some of the deepest problems of modern thought. Featuring the celebrated essay The Question Concerning Technology, this prescient volume contains Martin Heidegger's groundbreaking investigation into the pervasive enframing character of our understanding of ourselves and the world.” (Harper Collins: The Question Concerning Technology And Other Essays By Martin Heidegger, 2013). “Science and Reflection” (here published for the first time), a lecture delivered on August 4, 1953, to a small circle of attendees, is Heidegger’s meditation on the difference between science and “mindfulness”, and an as-relevant-as-ever attempt at uniting science as such, in itself, with its application and meaning, combatting scientific fragmentation. In line with the other foreshadowing lectures, “Dichterisch wohnet der Mensch”, given on October 6, 1951, in Bühlerhöhe, seeks to explore how to reach a peace or dwelling in a modern, technological world. Heidegger uses the quote by Hölderlin to explore how human existence is deeply intertwined with language and poetry and reaches the conclusion that to truly dwell is to live in a poetic way, allowing for the meaningful unfolding of the world through language. The other essays/lectures printed in this seminal volume are: Überwindung der Metaphysik (1936-1946) Wer ist Nietzsches Zarathustra (1953) Was heißt Denken? (1952) Bauen Wohnen Denken (1951) Das Ding (1950) Logos (Heraklit, Fragment 50) (1951) Moira (Parmenides, Fragment VIII, 34-41) (1952) Aletheia (Heraklit, Fragment 16) (1954)‎

‎Later edition of Chemniz’ collected works. Chemniz had lectured on Melanchthon's 'Loci Communes' from which lectures he compiled his own 'Loci Theologici', a system of theology (the first three parts of the present book). Martin Chemnitz (1522–1586) was a German Lutheran theologian and reformer who played a significant role in the development of Lutheran doctrine during the 16th century. He is often referred to as the ""Second Martin"" after Martin Luther, due to his prominence within the Lutheran tradition. Chemnitz is best known for his extensive work in systematizing Lutheran theology to which this present work is a fine example. He was a key figure in resolving theological controversies that arose after Luther's death and played a crucial role in shaping the direction of the Lutheran Reformation after Luther.‎

‎LUTHER, MARTIN (+) AURIFABER, JOHANNES (edt.).‎

(1556)

‎Epistolarum, Tomus primus, continens scripta viri Dei, ab anno millesimo quingentesimo septimo, usque ad annum vicesimum secundum. - [FIRST PRINTING OF LUTHER'S LETTERS]‎

‎Ihenae (Jena), Rhodius (Rödinger), 1556. 4to. In contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards with three raised bands and two clasps. Wear and soiling to extremities. Pigskin partly detached to upper part of boards. Previous two owner's names in contemporary hand to title-page. A few occassional underlignings and marginal annotations in contemporary hand throughout. Small worm-tract affecting last 20 leaves, internally generally fine. (10), 367 pp.‎

‎Rare first printing of Martin Luther's early letters from 1507 to 1522, spanning the years from the celebration of his first Mass to his removal to Wartburg Castle after the Diet of Worms. Among them is a notable letter Cardinal Albrecht, Archbishop of Magdeberg and Mainz accompanying a copy of the 95 Theses, composed on the very day (October 31st, 1517) when Luther affixed the Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg and Luther's first letter to Erasmus, penned on March 28th, 1519. These letters provide a most interesting perspective into Martin Luther's personal and public reflections on crucial aspects of the early days of the Reformation. The collection encompasses correspondence with figures such as Emperor Charles V, Pope Leo X, King Henry VIII, Georg Spalatin, Philip Melanchthon, Frederick, Elector of Saxony, Andreas Karlstadt, Cardinal Tommaso de Vio Cajetan and many others. The present work was edited by Joannes Aurifaber (1519-1575), Luther’s private secretary, who lived with Luther at the time of his death: “Joannes (Vinariensis 1519–1575), was born in the county of Mansfeldt in 1519. He studied at Wittenberg where he heard the lectures of Luther, and afterwards became tutor to Count Mansfeldt. In the war of 1544–45 he accompanied the army as field-preacher, and then lived with Luther as his famulus or private secretary, being present at his death in 1546. In the following year he spent six months in prison with John Frederick, elector of Saxony, who had been captured by the emperor, Charles V. He held for some years the office of court-preacher at Weimar, but owing to theological disputes was compelled to resign this office in 1561. In 1566 he was appointed to the Lutheran church at Erfurt, and there remained till his death in November 1575. Besides taking a share in the first collected or Jena edition of Luther’s works (1556), Aurifaber sought out and published at Eisleben in 1564–1565 several writings not included in that edition. He also published Luther’s Letters (1556, 1565), and Table Talk (1566). This popular work, which has given him most of his fame, is unfortunately but a second or third hand compilation.” (Encyclopedia Britannica). A second volume was published as “Secundus tomus epistolarum” in 1565. Adams L1805 BM STC German, 1455-1600, p. 535 ‎

‎FOTHERBY, MARTIN.‎

Reference : 60959

(1622)

‎Atheomastix: clearing foure Truthes against Atheists and Infidels. - [REFUTATION OF ATHEISM]‎

‎London, Nicholas Okes, 1622. Folio. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands to spine. Boards with triple blind rule to boarders. Traces from paper-label to upper compartment of spine. Title-page soiled and with waterstain throughout, primarily affecting first and last leaves. (XXXVI), 68, 99-362 pp.‎

‎First and only edition, posthumously published, of this important work in which Fotherby refuted atheism. Fotherby's approach involves using natural reasoning and secular authorities rather than relying solely on Scripture and Church Fathers, as was common, to convince skeptics of Christian truths. He understood the limitations of appealing only to divine revelation and therefore added arguments with references from classical literature and early modern travel accounts, aiming to persuade through credible sources rather than religious dogmatic authority. “Fotherby, Martin (1549?–1619), bishop of Salisbury, son of Maurice Fotherby, a resident at Grimsby, Lincolnshire, was born about 1549. He entered at Cambridge, and eventually became a fellow of Trinity. He became prebendary and archdeacon of Canterbury in 1596, and in 1615 was presented to the deanery. He had married some years before his first promotion for on 9 Sept. 1609 Lady Cooke wrote to Lord Salisbury asking him to promote the marriage of her eldest daughter with the archdeacon's eldest son, to which Fotherby objected, and in the following year, after the marriage had taken place, begged for a knighthood at the creation of the Prince of Wales for her son-in-law, because her daughter's worth and birth had been much disgraced by the match. Three years afterwards, being chaplain to James I, he was appointed to the bishopric of Salisbury. He was consecrated by Abbot, assisted by the bishops of London, Coventry, and Lincoln, 19 April 1618, and protested at his consecration that he had given nothing for his promotion. He died 29 March 1619, aged 70, and was buried in Allhallows Church, Lombard Street. In the epitaph on his tomb he is described in very high-flown terms of praise. He left an imperfect work against atheism, which was published after his death in 1622 in folio, under the title ‘Atheomastix: clearing foure Truthes against Atheists and Infidels.’ Four sermons were published together in 1608 in quarto, having been written in 1604. Copies of both these works are in the British Museum.” (DNB) Not in Lowndes.‎

‎Paris, Sonnius, 1594. 8vo. In contemporay vellum with yapp edges with title in contemporary hand to spine. Light soiling to extremities and a small tear to the vellum on the spine. Small worm-tract affecting last two leaves, otherwise a fine copy. (4), 369, (26) ff.‎

‎Exceedingly rare first edition of Fumée’s work on the Hungarian history from the Battle of Mohács and the death of Louis II in 1526 up until the truce between the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II and the Ottoman sultan Murad III.The present work not only presented a narrative history of the sixteenth-century wars in Hungary but also included a geographical description of the region. Fumée explicitly dedicates his history ""to you (the French people) and to no other."" After vividly portraying the brutality of warfare in Hungary, Fumée urges French readers to contemplate the destructive nature of war. He prompts them to reflect, stating, ""When you see the ruins and great desolations of a beautiful and rich country, you see your own at present reduced to an identical state."" Fumée draws direct parallels between the sufferings of Hungary and France, both seen as enduring divine punishment. In his conclusion, he asserts, ""it seems that we are in a worse condition than Hungary is in."" Hungary thus serves as a reminder to the French people of the shared hardships stemming from religious disunity, political turmoil, and civil warfare that continued to afflict both kingdoms. 'Martin Fumée, squire of Mary le Chastel, a high-ranking French aristocrat, based his desciption of the battle of Mohács on the work of István Brodarics (1470-1539), De conflictu Hungarorum cum Turcis ad Mohacz, Cracow, 1527, who in the company of the ill-fated Louis II (1506-1526) was eye-witness to the destruction of the Hungarian army by the Ottoman forces in 1526. Fumée's main source for events following the battle was probably Ascanio degli Hortensii' (Horvath p.26).‎

‎Nietzsche. 2 Bde. - [NIETZSCHE'S PHILOSOPHY AS THE METAPHYSICS OF OUR TIMES]‎

‎Stuttgart, Neske, 1961. 8vo. 2 orig. black full cloth w. orig. orange dust-jackets, white and black lettering to spines and front. A very good set w. only minor bumping to upper capital of vol. 1, otherwise near min, in- as well as externally. 661, (3)" 492, (2) pp.‎

‎The first edition of Heidegger's famous Nietzsche-book, in which he equals Nietzsche's notion of the super-human with the realization of modern technical humanity.Like his lectures on Nietzsche in the 1930'ies and '40'ies, the work also focuses on Nietzsche's posthumously published fragments ""Die Wille zur Macht"" (""The Will to Power""). According to Heidegger, these fragments form the culmination of Western Metaphysics, -though Metaphysics when turned upside-down, but far from abolished.""Nietzsche denkt das, was die metaphysische Tradition das Sein des Seienden nennt, als den ewig wiederkehrenden Willen zur Macht. With the word ""Sein"" (""Being""), Heidegger seems to have coined the ""essence"" of European thought. Metaphysically ""Sein"" is put into words as the ""Wahrheit des Seienden"" (""The Truth of Being"") in European thought. According to Heidegger, also Nietzsche's philosophy of thought is Metaphysics, but not Metaphysics as a particular philosophical discipline, rather Metaphysics as the ""Wahrheit über das Seiende"" (the truth about that, which is). Thus viewed, Nietzsche's philosophy becomes the Metaphysics of our times.‎

‎The very rare first printing of Luther’s sermon on Christian righteousness and the forgiveness of sins preached at Marburg in 1529. The sermon addresses one of the central theological questions of the Reformation, justification through faith and the forgiveness of sins emphasizing the distinction between Christian righteousness and human works. The sermon is part of the important group of Luther’s writings made in the aftermath of the Marburg Colloquy of October 1529 where Luther met with Zwingli and other leading reformers in an attempt to solve doctrinal differences in the still new Protestant movement.
