‎Meer dan twintig jaar lang sleept kunstenaar Antonio L pez zijn schilderspullen een hoge toren op en af, om zijn panoramaschilderij van Madrid af te maken. Het is kenmerkend voor de Spanjaard: het schilderproces is een manier om de wereld beter te leren kennen, vindt hij. Door alles uitvoerig op te meten en altijd in de nabijheid van zijn onderwerp te blijven, weet L pez de realiteit feilloos over te nemen. Maar afstandelijk of kil wordt zijn werk nooit. ‎Het werk van de Drentse Albert Steenbergen (1814-1900) is realistisch, maar ook ge dealiseerd. Hij haalt inspiratie uit de werkelijkheid, maar vult deze aan met zijn rijke fantasie. Als Steenbergen slechts een paar maanden oud is, valt hij. Door het ongeval kan hij de rest van zijn leven niet goed meer lopen. Toch weerhoudt dat hem niet van zijn kunstenaarsdroom: zijn extreem gedetailleerde kunstwerken zijn vanaf 1835 op meerdere tentoonstellingen te zien. In 1853 gooit Steenbergen het roer om.‎

‎The work of Joke Van den Heuvel (b. 1983) initiates an interaction with (historical) fragmented material that she presents the viewer. The interaction with images concerns a perpetual (re) assembling and constructing /organizing of the now and the past. Van den Heuvel is interested in narratives produced by the barely perceptible, acknowledging that the meaning of images cannot be contained by language. Recordings of repetitive actions and monotonous characters in looping scenes blur the observer?s focus, inducing a kind of blindness towards the object ? a blindness that makes seeing possible again. ?134340 is a fragmentary, juxtaposing anti-story about shifting contexts and transformations, but not because it is intended to analyse processes of meaning for the sake of the analysis. The work expresses above all a melancholy desire to search in the rubble of what is broken, to link together the dots, in the heavens and here below, to make a drawing once again. Not in order to arrive at an unbreakable circle, but to be still truly involved and personal. Which means: building up a subjective resistance to both the fragmentation of images and the urge to let a moving multiplicity implode into a point of meaning.? ‎From the late sixteenth century until around 1800, new ideas and practices of urban planning and the implementation of public buildings, water works and fortifications from the Low Countries were disseminated across Europe and America. Engineers, mathematicians and other scientists in the Low Countries applied methods of design and land surveying that were gradually assimilated and often modified following exchanges within local practice. In some cases, models were projected onto the existing situation. This phenomenon of disseminating and exchanging theoretical models and practical methods between the Low Countries, Europe and its colonies during this period developed into a new Early Modern Urbanism movement within the Western World. Grid-like plans figured prominently in these processes of dissemination and exchange. In the Low Countries, grid-like structures allowed a comprehensive approach to a multitude of complex problems in urban planning (for example, the connection of canals, streets and fortifications) in parts of existing towns, as well as in city extensions and ex novo cities. Moreover, the experimental approaches in Antwerp and other urban laboratories resulted in new theories on town planning and fortification as well. Given the distinct cultures of the Catholic Spanish Southern Netherlands and the Republican, Dutch Calvinist Northern Netherlands, the Low Countries provide an excellent case for studying the identity of urban forms. Both engaged in enormous expansion overseas, and the simultaneous exchange of practices between the southern and northern parts of the Low Countries lead to the combination of identities. In this new volume in the Architectura Moderna series, various scholars examine the dissemination of practical methods and theoretical models of urban planning from the Northern and Southern Low Countries, in addition to exchanges with local practices in Northern and Central Europe and in the New World. ‎
