‎The very rare first edition of the first French translation of Grotius' groundbreaking magnum opus, ""De Jure Belli ac Pacis"", the founding work of international law. The profoundly influential masterpiece - written during the Thirty Years' War, in the hope that rational human beings might be able to agree to legal limits on war's destruction - ""made him famous throughout Europe... [t]he questions which he put forward have come to be the basis of the ultimate view of land and society. This was the first attempt to lay down a principle of right, and a basis for society and government, outside Church or Scripture... Grotius's principle of an immutable law, which God can no more alter than a mathematical axiom, was the first expression of the ""droit naturel"", the natural law which exercised the great political theorists of the eighteenth century, and is the foundation of modern international law."" This is the first French edition of the famous Barbeyrac translation of Grotius great work and the foundation of modern international law. It is the second French translation after the translation by Antoine de Courtin and this Barbeyrac translation became the basis for all later French editions and translations while the very valuable notes and comments added by Barbeyrac were included in many editions of this work in many other languages. Barbeyrac indicates in the preface that he has based this translation on the first edition of 1625 and the important Blaeu edition of 1632. This last edition was a reprint of the 1631 Blaeu editon and this edition contained a large number of corrections and additons by Grotius himself. The 1631 edition is considered to be the definitive text of this famous work.The Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius is the founder of the modern concept of international law and is celebrated for his treatise on the law of war and peace, De jure belli ac pacis, 1625. ‎Edition originale française dans la traduction de Pierre Le Jeune, protestant français réfugié en Hollande.Grotius était emprisonné à Loevestein lorsqu'il composa cet ouvrage en latin peu avant son évasion (1622). Il le commenta ainsi à son ami l'avocat général Jérôme Bignon: "Je savais qu'on ne doit employer pour défendre la Vérité, d'autres armes que la Vérité même; que je ne pouvais appeler Vérité que ce qui m'avait paru l'être; et qu'en vain j'entreprendrais de persuader les autres par des raisons qui ne m'auraient pas convaincu".Cette contribution du célèbre fondateur du droit international à la théologie arminienne a jeté les bases du méthodisme et du pentecôtisme. On retrouve la preuve de cet achat dans l'exemplaire Van Praet du catalogue de cette vente sur lequel il a porté le nom des acquéreurs (BnF RES-Q-917), et l'on retrouve le livre sur un catalogue Bailly du 24 mai 1784 (BnF DELTA-103).L'exemplaire provenait antérieurement de la collection Bonnemet vendue en 1772 et achetée en bloc par La Vallière ('Catalogue des livres du cabinet de feu M. ‎Magnifique exemplaire aux armes de Louis IV de Condé (1692-1740), petit-fils de Louis XIV par sa mère, chef du Conseil de Régence (1715-1723) , premier ministre de Louis XV (1723-1726). Disgracié, il fut contraint de quitter le gouvernement. Notre exemplaire porte en tête du contre-plat recto une mention manuscrite à l'encre "Emigré Condé 50", c'est-à-dire que cet exemplaire a été porté sur un catalogue des livres confisqués à la Révolution. Les Condé émigrèrent après la prise de la Bastille, leurs bibliothèques de Chantilly et du Palais Bourbon furent réunies pour être confisquées et réparties dans les dépôts publics. Si le duc d'Aumale put récupérer les manuscrits, les imprimés ne furent pas restitués. Le magnifique portrait d'Hugo Grotius est accompagné de vers de Daniel Heinsius. Un érudit nantais [E. P.-B.] inséra une note sur une page ajoutée datée de mai 1868. Notre exemplaire présente une particularité : complet, il n'a pas le privilège de Louis XIV qui prend place juste après celui de Ferdinand III [dans ce cas la réclame au bas de ce dernier est PRI, dans notre exemplaire, la signature est SOM, pour annoncer le privilège des Etats]; en queue de la page de titre, l'énoncé des privilèges a été ajouté par collage. Il s'agit donc d'un premier tirage, qui aura été corrigé ensuite, avec une page de titre correctement imprimée et l'addition du privilège français. La première édition parut en latin en 1657 à Amsterdam. Nous présentons l'édition originale en français qui a été réalisée par François Lhéritier. Le texte de Grotius présente aussi l'histoire de l'expansion des Hollandais en Asie, contre les Portugais, que la recherche actuelle a remis en lumière (S. Subrahmanyan par exemple).‎

La première expression du droit naturel et fondement du droit international moderne.Le plus important ouvrage de Grotius (en néérlandais: Hugo de Groot), un des érudits les plus éminents en matière de droit et de diplomatie du XVIIe siècle. Grotius est communément appelé "le père du Droit des gens". État correct de la reliure, usure, mors partiellement fendus. Intérieur complet et satisfaisant, qlq. taches marginales, légère mouillure aux premiers feuillets, un petit trou sans gravité à la page de titre. Édition latine parut 26 ans après l'original. Grotius (1583-1645), pose les base du droit international et du droit de la guerre, établis sur le respect d'une loi commune entre les états. Il introduit des réflexions qui marqueront profondément la conscience politique moderne. Cet ouvrage, dédié à Louis XIII, sera écrit lors de son long exil en France. Grotius était en effet impliqué dans de vives controverses théologiques aux Pays-Bas, qui lui valurent une peine d'emprisonnement à vie. Il écourta la sentence en s'évadant dans une malle à livre. Blaeu, l'un des imprimeurs hollandais les plus important d'alors, est reconnu pour les cartes splendides qu'il édita.‎
