‎The Pic Nic Papers‎

‎The Pic Nic Papers de Charles Dickens, édition originale. Riviere & Son. 200 x 122 mm. Dickens, Charles. The Pic Nic Papers, by various hands, 1841. First edition edited by Charles Dickens. Henry Colburn, 1841. First edition. Eckel, pp.143-5; Gimbel B109; Sadleir, XIX Century Fiction, 703. This is the later issue without the incorrect "publisher young" on p. 3 of the introduction and with Palmer as the printer of both volumes. Charles Dickens edited the first two volumes of the work and wrote the introduction as well as The Lamplighter's Story. Other contributors included William Harrison Ainsworth, Thomas Moore, Leitch Ritchie and Agnus Strickland. Macrone's widow eventually received 450 pounds from this charitable publication. It was originally contrived by Dickens to benefit the widow and children of 28 year old publisher John Macrone, who died suddenly in 1837. “Charles Dickens may well be the most ingenious author in English literature. The energy of his inventiveness gave birth to a gallery of characters whose lives have overflowed the boundaries of his books to become permanent fixtures in the collective imagination” (James Mustich).

‎Esquisses de Boz‎

‎First edition of Dickens’ first book. 3 volumes in-8, maroquin rouge à long grain, dos à nerfs, filet or sur les coupes, tranches dorées. Reliure de l’époque. 180 x 117 mm. Dickens, Charles (1812-1870). Esquisses de Boz. Sketches by "Boz" Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People in two volumes. Illustrations by George Cruikshank. London, 1836. The second series complete in one volume. London 1837. First edition first printing of Dickens' first book. The first printing of the first edition carries the imprint of Whiting, whereas the second and third printings carry those of Hazard and Vizetelly, respectively. "Those to whom the Sketches revealed a new writer saw in them many merits which to us are obscured: they broke entirely new ground, were written in a new style, and despite their frouzy topics, seemed to bring a refreshing breath of reality into the literary atmosphere. Nowadays, the best parts of the book seem to be those which are purely descriptive. Remembering how rare a thing is the ability to depict, really to depict, in words and especially to make interesting a description of the everyday, the commonplace, we gladly recognize in Boz's handwork the first proofs of Dickens' extraordinary power" (Gissing, The Immortal Dickens).
