Brossure editoriali conservate, tela moderna con titolo in oro su tassello in pelle al piatto superiore. Per un breve periodo nel 1826, George Cruickshank, già un artista affermato nella satira politica e nell'illustrazione di libri, si dedicò alla frenologia. Ha prodotto una raccolta di sei tavole di 33 incisioni, collegate da una prefazione esplicativa, sotto il titolo, Illustrazioni frenologiche o visione d'artista del sistema craniologico dei dottori Gall e Spurzheim. Fu pubblicato durante quella che in Gran Bretagna è considerata “la mania frenologica”. Nel 1873, mentre la frenologia stava passando dalla credibilità scientifica alla storia, le illustrazioni frenologiche di Cruickshank furono ristampate a grande richiesta. Di particolare interesse i modi e la misura in cui le sue caricature costituiscono un contributo alla storia della frenologia. Rivelano una sorprendente conoscenza della frenologia in relazione a Spurzheim e Gall. Queste illustrazioni di George Cruickshank sono una satira sulla frenologia o sulla natura umana?‎

‎Hardback three quarter dark leather with marbled boards, with matching endpapers. Gilt titles to spine. Top edge gilt. No date but circa 1865. Date of publication suggested by the Bodleian Library. Scarce in this format. Fairy tale by Charles Perrault, rewritten and illustrated by Cruikshank. Boards slightly rubbed. Original soft covers are bound in. Six illustrations with tissue guards. 30 pages, 6 unnumbered leaves of plates. Slight rubbing to the edges of the spine. The binding has split to the inside rear hinge, so that the book block falls away - but is still held in place (see photograph). Front end paper is reinforced with archival tape. 180 x 140 mm (7 x 5œ inches).‎

Questa piacevole raccolta di storielle, aneddoti, ecc. di gusto umoristico, molto ben illustrata da 40 tavv. incise f.t. (di cui 8 costituiscono le antiporte e le pagine di titolo con vignetta): sono affascinanti invenzioni del celebre caricaturista inglese, tutte finemente colorate a mano.Cfr. L'opera e le tavole descrivono i vari "caratteri, costumi e maniere" degli inglesi, questa divertente esplorazione degli alti e bassi della società londinese è un adattamento fedele del popolarissimo "Life in London" di Pierce Egan. Il volume esplora la storia di Egan di Tom, Jerry e Logic, un gruppo di amici le cui disavventure li portano dai quartieri più alla moda di Londra ai bassifondi più poveri. ‎Intéressante gravure en couleurs représentant une satire sociale sur la variété des groupes ethniques aux États-Unis. L'acteur Charles Mathews est ici représenté comme les quatorze personnages différents essayés dans son "Trip to America", un divertissement basé sur des expériences glanées au cours de sa tournée des villes américaines (dont New York, Boston et Philadelphie) au début des années 1820. Les quatorze personnes rassemblées en plein air représentent entre autres un irlandais améliorant sa fortune, une héritière hollandaise, un cordonnier du Kentucky, un tailleur émigré français et un esclave en fuitejouant du violon ; légendes satiriques en anglais. En arrière-plan sont représentés une ville américaine en hiver avec des bâtiments bas aux toits enneigés, un pin et un pigeonnier sur un poteau. Bon état de conservation. Traces d'adhésif au dos.‎

‎Très célèbre caricature colorisée du grand Cruikshank (1792-1878) parue dans le Comic almanack and diary. Elle illustre à sa manière satirique les effets délétères de l'envoi en Australie de jeunes femmes anglaises à fin de fournir des compagnes à la surabondante population masculine de l'Australie, qui, depuis les années 1800, avait surtout reçu détenus et mauvais garçons dont l'Angleterre souhaitait se débarrasser. Donc, les jeunes filles épousables étant parties au loin, des négociants avisés font venir d'Australie et du Pacifique des cargaisons de jeunes indigènes : débarquées sur le quai, d'allure plus que fortement mélanésienne, aguichantes et provocatrices, elles suscitent l'immense stupeur - pour ne pas dire plus - d'un groupe de gentleman anglais à la fois pâles et guindés. ‎

Free endpapers and covers inside with green silk. The binding is signed in gold on foot of inside froncover ""Tout. Binder"". The 2 novels were published in monthly installments, bound as such and with original printed wrappers from Ainsworth's Magazine: ""A Monthly Miscellany of Romance, General Literature and Art.
