This work was published (and presumably inscribed) just before publication of the Ingoldsby Legends. The two author's greatly admired each others work. George Cruikshank (17921878) was among the foremost British caricaturists and illustrators of the nineteenth century, widely celebrated as the "modern Hogarth" for the biting wit and moral insight of his art. Over a long and industrious career he executed more than ten thousand designs, ranging from political and social satires to illustrations for leading writers of his day. His spirited draughtsmanship and acute observation left an enduring imprint on Victorian visual culture, exposing with equal skill the follies of public life and the darker habits of the age, notably the evils of intemperance. .‎
