Excellent and finely bound copy of the celebrated and esteemed first edition with the complete Neo-Latin supplements by the German philologist, historian and librarian Johannes Caspar Freinsheim (1608-1660). After a first part with his supplements to books 46-95 had been published in 1654 Freinsheim could finish his opus magnum only shortly before his death in 1660. The manuscript was acquired finely from the heirs with money from king Louis XIV and appeared first in print in the present edition “for the use of the Dauphin” (Ad usum Delphini). The editor based his supplements on the fourth-century excerpt, the Periochae, a summary to the book 142 of Livy’s History. As filling elements Freinsheim used the writing of other antique authors. In an alphabetically arranged catalogue the editor offers all his sources. A few additions in the books 41, 43, 44, and 45 were contributed by the second editor, the French historian and man of letters Jean Doujat (1609- 1688). Freinsheims supplements gained much fame and were translated into various European languages. - Blind stamps in first and last leaves. - Few gatherings browned, an excuisit copy complete with all engravings
