First edition of Teissier’s work on Jacques-Auguste de Thou’s Histoire, edited to render the biographies of learned men scattered through de Thou’s work more accessible by uniting them into French. Since de Thou’s obituary notices are extremely short, Teissier states in his avertissement that he has added material both biographical and critical, listing the chief works of each man and correcting de Thou’s own words in certain cases. He used Pierre du Ryer’ translation for those biographies taken from Books 1-57, correcting that translation by comparison with the Latin when there was need. He has clearly indicated in his edition where he ceased to use du Ryer’s version and began his own. An unaltered second edition was at Lyon, while a third was augmented and issued at Utrecht in 1696, and reprinted the following year. A Berlin edition was published in three volumes in 1701. - Later vellum. Bibliographie: Kinser S. 302, Nr. 3.; Cioranescu 64226; Michaud XLV, 99.
