Retirage à l'identique de l'édition originale, Clouzot, p. 90, signale de l'éditeur bruxellois, Henri Samuel, a réalisé plusieurs rééditions du texte intégral des Châtiments dans le même format et à la même date. sans mention de nom d'imprimeur, et sans accent circonflèxe sur la a de "Chatiments" sur le faux-titre.Est relié à la suite un opuscule de 29 pages intitulé "Le Christ au Vatican" sous le nom de Victor Hugo. Londres et Genève, Chez les principaux Libraires, 1868, (imprimerie Wittmann) ; 29 pp. Mais ce texte satirique qui avait déjà paru sans nom d'auteur en 1853 dans une édition de la Guerre des Dieux de Parny, puis en 1861 en brochure avec le nom d'Hugo, et enfin en 1868 associé avec un autre poème, La voix de Gernesey, n'est pas de l'auteur des Misérables, mais de Paul-Frédéric Cabantous. (E. Drougard, La légende du Grand Inquisiteur et Le Christ au Vatican. Revue des Études Slaves, 1934. pp. 224-227). La Voix de Guernesey avait paru au format in-16 en feuilles chez T. M. Bichard, à Guernesey, en 1867. Hugo réagit à la défaite des Chemises rouges de Garibaldi contre les troupes pontificales et françaises à Mentana et écrit en quelques jours ce long poème, lettre ouverte à Garibaldi, imprimé pour être expédié clandestinement en France.

Première édition réimposée à la N.R.F. Un des 40 premiers exemplaires sur vergé d'Arches. Paris, Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue française, (12 mai) 1914. 1 vol. (160 x 215 mm) de 296 p. et [3] f. Demi-maroquin vert à coins, dos à nerfs orné de caissons et filets à froid, tête dorée, titre doré, date en pied, couverture et dos conservés (reliure signée de Devauchelle). Édition imprimée moins d'un mois après la première, sur les mêmes presses de l'imprimerie Sainte-Catherine à Bruges. Contrairement au tirage d'avril, elle reprend la maquette et les couvertures habituelles des éditions de la Nouvelle Revue française. À ce titre, elle bénéficie d'un tirage de tête, réimposé sur papier vergé d'Arches - ici le numéro 40 des 64 exemplaires imprimés.
L'un des livres les plus célèbres de Gide fut aussi l'un de ceux qui lui coûta le plus à écrire. Son projet remontait à 1893, des indications sur les personnages commencent à apparaître dans le Journal dès 1905, et Gide en commence la rédaction en 1911. Le 24 juin 1913, l'auteur confie au même Journal : « Achever hier les Caves. Sans doute, il me restera beaucoup à reprendre encore après que je l'aurai donné à lire à Copeau et sur les épreuves. Curieux livre ; mais je commence à en avoir plein le dos et par-dessus la tête. Je ne me persuade pas encore qu'il est fini, et j'ai du mal à m'arrêter d'y songer. » Le résultat sera à la hauteur de l'effort fourni. Pour la trame de son récit, Gide était parti d'un fait divers sordide, une sombre histoire d'escroquerie qui en 1892 défraya un temps la chronique : à Lyon, des escrocs avaient fait croire à des gens trop crédules que le pape Léon XIII était retenu prisonnier par des cardinaux francs-maçons dans les caves du Vatican. De cette invraisemblable aventure, Gide avait gardé dans ses documents des articles de journaux et des affiches ; il ne lui restait qu'à écrire. On en a surtout retenu le fameux « acte gratuit » dont Gide a dû se défendre d'avoir voulu faire l'apologie: « Mais non, je ne crois pas, pas du tout, à un acte gratuit. Même, je tiens celui-ci pour parfaitement impossible à concevoir, à imaginer ». Bel exemplaire. Rare tirage.

Summary On 20 October 1870 pope Pius IX adjourned the First Vatican Council, because of the Italian Rissorgimento troops approaching the city of Rome. Given that the Council had only opened less than a year prior, on 8 December 1869, the act was emblematic. The council, as the Catholic Church's protective response against all things new - rationalism, liberalism, naturalism, materialism, and pantheism - was overtaken by history. Given its premature end not all documents prepared were completed and those that were promulgated, became among the most controversial documents in the nineteenth and twentieth-century Catholic Church, strongly defining its relations to other Christian confessions and modernity. Similarly, around one hundred years after the suspension of the First Vatican Council its historical and theological study was overtaken by the event of the Second Vatican Council, known for its rapprochement to the modern world. The history and results of the First Vatican Council were either forgotten or reinterpreted in light of this subsequent council's decisions. In light of the 150th anniversary of this council, the editors and authors of this volume set themselves the goal of re-examining this tradition of historical and theological reception (and forgetting) of the First Vatican Council. Summary This volume is the result of a workshop organized in Leuven within the context of the Australian Catholic University-KU Leuven-Tilburg University project on Vatican II (1962-1965). This volume focuses on the preparatory period of the Council and its broader context, for many renewal movements were underway decades before the Council's opening. The preparation of the Council was also a period of intense consultation of bishops and male superiors of religious orders and congregations. Indeed, John XXIII aimed at introducing an aggiornamento in the Roman Catholic Church, taking into account the wishes and the needs of bishops and superiors. The volume presented here offers new insights about this period on the basis of archives and other materials insufficiently consulted to date.
