‎Ensemble de deux rouleaux magiques éthiopien illustrés du XIXe siècle rédigés en Guèze sur parchemin. Rédigés en Guèze, la langue liturgique de lÉglise orthodoxe dÉthiopie, ces talismans ou rouleaux magiques étaient utilisés pour protéger ou soigner quelquun. Traditionnellement portés autour du cou, ils permettent déloigner le mauvais il comme celui connu sous le nom de « Buda » dans la culture Éthiopienne et Érythréenne. Le texte est composé de diverses prières contre les mauvais esprits. Les motifs en forme de carré et les illustrations renforcent le pouvoir protecteur du texte. Les deux rouleaux sont rédigés à lencre noire sur 1 colonne, avec des passages à lencre rouge (nom de Dieu). Le premier est illustré de bandeaux à motifs géométriques rehaussés de rouge. Les deux comportent un dessin à lencre noire et rouge représentant un ange représentant Saint-Michel. Le second débute par « Traduction de quelques passages : « Au nom du Père et du Fils, et d'Abraham [] L'esclave qui fut tué par le diable [] Fellasha et le donneur sorte de querelle d'esclaves [] être condamné et par la parole de Dieu je suis Jésus-Christ [] Au nom du Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit, ô Dieu, priez pour que dans votre souffrance, vous me manifestiez la miséricorde des enfants dAmhel [] De la douleur des enfants et de la douleur du monde, du sceau du Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit, je tai créé, ô Dieu, et dans le monde, et tu as entendu ma voix, mon amour. » Ensemble en bel état. 2 handwritten folios in red and black ink on parchment (530 x 80 mm and 640 x 95 mm), each decorated with an illustration of St. Michael. (Slight water stain at the edge.) Rolled together. A set of two illustrated 19th-century Ethiopian magic scrolls written in Ge'ez on parchment. Written in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, these talismans or magic scrolls were used to protect or heal someone. Traditionally worn around the neck, they ward off the evil eye, such as the one known as Buda in Ethiopian and Eritrean culture. The text consists of various prayers against evil spirits. The square-shaped motifs and illustrations reinforce the texts protective power. Both scrolls are written in black ink in a single column, with passages in red ink (the name of God). The first is illustrated with bands of geometric patterns accented in red. Both feature a drawing in black and red ink depicting an angel representing Saint Michael. The second begins with Translation of selected passages: In the name of the Father and the Son, and of Abraham [] The slave who was killed by the devil [] Fellasha and the giver of a sort of slave quarrel [] to be condemned and by the word of God I am Jesus Christ [] In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, O God, pray that in your suffering, you may show me the mercy of the children of Amhel [] From the pain of the children and the pain of the world, by the seal of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I created you, O God, and in the world, and you heard my voice, my love.
