Unique first edition of this extremely rare work by Richard Grant White on national anthems, published in New York in 1861. The work begins with: "The Committee charged with selecting a national anthem entrusted Messrs. Rudd Carleton with the task of publishing, under my editorial direction, a selection of the most deserving and remarkable songs it had received. These songs were few in number, no more than thirty in all; and although remarkable for their lyrical excellence, their number gradually diminished as the manuscripts were withdrawn by their authors, so that after a time the original project was abandoned..." We have found no copies offered for sale at public auction for nearly 100 years. A fine, fresh copy.‎
