‎Édition originale d'un des premiers livres sur la Chine illustré de planches en couleurs. Son auteur, Frédéric Shoberl (17751853), est un journaliste, éditeur, traducteur, écrivain et illustrateur anglais, éditeur de « Forget-Me-Not », premier annuaire littéraire, publié à Noël 1823. Il est aussi le traducteur de « Notre-Dame de Paris » de Victor Hugo. Publié à Londres en 1823 par Ackerman dans le cadre de la série « Le Monde en Miniature », publiée en 43 volumes entre 1821 et 1827. « Cette intéressante série avait pour but d'accroître les connaissances sur les différentes branches de la grande famille humaine, non seulement pour les adultes, mais aussi pour l'instruction et le divertissement des jeunes étudiants » [Abbey, Voyages, 6]. Louvrage donne une description de la Chine inspirée de divers auteurs et voyageurs, avec une introduction sur sa géographie et son histoire suivie d'une description de sa population. Il est illustré de 30 planches gravées hors texte aquarellées à la main représentant les habitants de la Chine en costumes traditionnels. Full period burgundy calfskin, smooth decorated spine, covers decorated with gilt frames and blind-stamped frieze with fleurons at the corners, interior lace, gilt edges. (spines finely restored, slightly discolored). First edition of one of the first books on China illustrated with color plates. Its author, Frederic Shoberl (17751853), was an English journalist, publisher, translator, writer, and illustrator, editor of Forget-Me-Not, the first literary yearbook, published at Christmas 1823. He was also the translator of Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris. Published in London in 1823 by Ackerman as part of the series The World in Miniature, published in 43 volumes between 1821 and 1827. "This interesting series was intended to increase knowledge about the different branches of the great human family, not only for adults, but also for the instruction and entertainment of young students " [Abbey, Voyages, 6]. The work provides a description of China inspired by various authors and travelers, with an introduction to its geography and history followed by a description of its population. It is illustrated with 30 hand-colored engraved plates depicting the inhabitants of China in traditional costumes.
