Handwritten scroll on parchment consisting of 3 sewn pieces (90 x 620-510-600 mm): text and 3 illustrations in black and red ink. (Parchment browned, with water damage in the margins, wear on the outer part). Scarce Ethiopian magic scroll dating from the 19th century or earlier. Written in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, these talismans in the form of small scrolls were used to protect or heal someone. Traditionally worn around the neck, they were believed to ward off evil spirits such as the one known as Buda in Ethiopian and Eritrean culture. The text consists of various prayers against evil spirits. The square-shaped motifs and illustrations reinforce the protective power of the text. The scroll is written in black ink in columns with a few passages in red ink. The whole is decorated with bands of repeated geometric motifs enhanced with red. The illustration features several compositions on a black background enhanced with red. The first depicts a figure with a body composed of geometric patterns. The second appears to represent Saint George on his horse, and the last depicts a face within a cross. The manuscript is well preserved.‎
