1 vol. 8vo in two parts (205 x 132 mm) with : Volume I. 1 frontispiece; XVI (false title, title, foreword); 296 pp. (including table); Volume II. 392 pp. (including false title, title and table); 3 plates (foxing). Contemporary half shagreened basane, boards covered with beige marbled paper, smooth spine decorated and titled. Very rare first edition of this travel report by Auguste Bernard Duhaut-Cilly (1790-1849), translated into Italian by Paolo Emilio Botta. This very important edition contains previously unpublished observations of great importance, as well as a comprehensive Italian-Hawaiian vocabulary (pp. 360-365). Born in Saint-Malo, Duhaut-Cilly made his career as a French merchant. After stopovers in the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands and the Brazilian coast, he headed up the Pacific coast, arriving in Yerba Buena in 1827. Over the next two years, he visited most of the missions, presidios and pueblos of Alta California. At the time, no other traveler had visited so many Californian settlements, and his account is the best contemporary account of the region. A well-preserved copy in its original binding of this very important work on the history of California and Hawaii, complete with the 4 required plates with views of Anaroura, Monterey, San Louis-Rey, and Ross.‎
