Quelques inscriptions manuscrites à lencre brune. Plein maroquin rouge d'époque, dos à nerfs ornés, titres et tomaisons de maroquin vert, triple filets encadrant les plats avec fleurons angulaires et blason doré postérieurs au centre (Harry et Caresse Crosby), filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées.‎

‎Superbe exemplaire, provenant de prestigieuses collections, de ce bréviaire en quatre volumes imprimé en rouge et noir par léditeur parisien Frederic Léonard. Provenance : 'La Ponchapt. De Rustant' (inscription à lencre brune en bas des titres) ; M. L'Abbé Andreu (ex-libris gravé); Estelle Doheny (ex-libris en doré ovale sur maroquin rouge contrecollé sur le premier contre-plat, sa vente, Christie's Camarillo California, 1er février 1988, lot 403). Harry et Caresse Crosby (ex-libris doré rectangulaire en maroquin vert contrecollé sur le premier contre-plat, blason doré au centre du premier plat). Estelle Doheny, seconde épouse du magnat du pétrole californien Edward Lawrence Doheny (1856-1935), débute sa collection de livres au milieu des années 1920, manifestant un goût marqué pour les livres à tranches peintes et elle constitue une collection de manuscrits et de livres imprimés rares réputée, comptant parmi les plus célèbres bibliothèques privées des Etats-Unis, collection dans laquelle bibles et livres religieux tenaient une place importante. Son ex-libris de maroquin ovale, est orné d'un encadrement de style Renaissance (coquille en tête et mascaron en queue), avec linscription dorée « ex libris * estelle doheny ». Harry et Caresse Crosby fondèrent la Black Sun Press à Paris en 1927, qui influença la publication des premiers ouvrages d'un certain nombre d'écrivains, dont James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway Caresse Crosby, née Mary Phelps en (1892, New York-1970, Rome), est une éditorialiste, sculptrice, poétesse et femme de lettres américaine, notamment célèbre pour avoir participé à l'invention du soutien-gorge en 1913. 4 vol. in-8vo (215 x 145 mm) from: I. Printing in red and black, 4 engraved frontispieces, 7 out-of-text engravings (including one repeated), initials, banners. Added publications bound at the end of volumes. Some handwritten inscriptions in brown ink. Full period red morocco, spine with decorated raised bands, titles and volume numbers in green morocco, triple fillets framing the boards with angular fleurons and golden coat of arms later in the center (Harry and Caresse Crosby), gilt fillet on the cuts, gilt edges. Superb copy, from prestigious collections, of this four-volume breviary printed in red and black by the Parisian publisher Frederic Léonard. Provenance: 'La Ponchapt. De Rustant' (inscription in brown ink at the bottom of the titles); M. L'Abbé Andreu (engraved ex-libris); Estelle Doheny (oval gold bookplate on red morocco laminated on the first back cover, her sale, Christie's Camarillo California, February 1, 1988, lot 403). Harry and Caresse Crosby (rectangular golden bookplate in green morocco laminated on the first cover, golden coat of arms in the center of the first cover). Estelle Doheny, second wife of Californian oil magnate Edward Lawrence Doheny (1856-1935), began her book collection in the mid-1920s, showing a marked taste for books with painted edges, and she built up a collection of manuscripts and books renowned rare prints, counting among the most famous private libraries in the United States, a collection in which bibles and religious books held an important place. Its oval morocco ex-libris is decorated with a Renaissance style frame (shell at the head and mascaron at the tail), with the golden inscription ex libris * estelle doheny. Harry and Caresse Crosby founded the Black Sun Press in Paris in 1927, which influenced the publication of the early works of a number of writers, including James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway Caresse Crosby, born Mary Phelps in (1892, New York-1970, Rome), is an American columnist, sculptor, poet and woman of letters, notably famous for having participated in the invention of the bra in 1913.‎
