‎La géographie de l'Asie avant Marco Polo. Quelques mots sur le choix des textes présentés. Le Livre des deux Mahométans. Voyage de Jean du Plan de Carpin. Itinéraire de Guillaume de Rubruk. — "Les géographes occidentaux du Moyen âge ignoraient tout de l'Asie centrale, de la Chine et de l'Inde ; c'était pour eux une Terra incognita qu'ils imaginaient désertique, peuplée de lions et autres bêtes sauvages, d'anthropophages. Quel était le véritable aspect de ces pays, quels peuples y vivaient, quelles civilisations s'y étaient développées ? Ils n'en savaient rien. Pourtant dans l'antiquité le monde gréco-romain avait été en relations avec la Chine et l'Inde par les caravanes de marchands qui partaient des ports de la Méditerranée orientale pour aller échanger leurs marchandises contre la soie de Chine, les épices de l'Inde. Les armées d'Alexandre avaient pénétré au cœur de l'Asie et dans l'Inde. Plus tard, au Moyen âge, les marchands suivaient les mêmes routes que ceux des temps antiques. Mais les géographes continuaient d'ignorer cette source d'informations. Il fallut attendre le voyage de Marco Polo, marchand vénitien, au début du XIVe siècle et le récit qu'il fit de son séjour en Chine pour dissiper cette ignorance. Marco Polo déchirait les voiles qui entouraient le mystère de la Chine : il y montrait un empire à la civilisation avancée, des flottes de navires bariolés, des palais aux toits d'or au milieu de villes ceintes de murailles. D'ailleurs, avant le Vénitien, plusieurs voyageurs avaient pénétré en Asie et en connaissaient tous les secrets. M. A. t' Serstevens a dressé la liste de ces audacieux, à commencer par Cosmas Indicopleustès, marchand d'Alexandrie qui, au VIe siècle, s'était rendu dans l'Inde et à Ceylan. A. ťSerstevens a retenu les relations laissées par le musulman Soleyman qui, au IXe siècle, pénétra en Chine et dans l'Inde, et par un moine, Frère Guillaume de Rubruk, qui au XIIIe siècle visita les pays des Mongols et des Tartares. Charignon.- Celui-ci Livre I, dans lequel sont décrites les régions traversées par messire Marc Pol et celles dont il a entendu parler au cours de son voyage, depuis les bords de la Méditerranée jusqu'à la résidence estivale du Grand Khan Koubilaï à Chang-Tou (chapitres I à LXXIV). Dos jauni, sinon très bon état.‎
