//// Splendid binding in stamped calf of Jan Ryckaert or in his style. Jan Ryckaert (1506 -1573) was a bookbinder in Ghent, active between 1511 and 1546. This binding does not bear his initials, but its composition in diamond pattern is similar to his style of binding. Each back cover of the binding is covered with a XVth c. vellum manuscript leaf. Robert Estienne issued three editions of Terence in the same year 1529. This one, with Donat's commentaries, another in-folio edition without these commentaries, and a last one in-octavo edition, bearing the indication 'secunda editio', which is described by Schreiber, The Estienne 39. Each was addressed to a different audience. The one with Donatus' commentary was for scholars. The one without commentary, but heavily interlined, for students and the one in-8 for the general reader. Ex libris on endpapers: Johannes (?), name blacked out. Light restorations to the binding. Very beautiful copy. Moreau, Inventaire Chronologique des Éditions Parisiennes du XVIe siècle III, 1920. USTC 146016.
