‎LOVAT, SIMON FRASER.‎

(1747)

‎Memoires de la Vie du Lord Lovat. Relation De La Conduite Du Feu Comte De Kilmarnock Apres Sa Sentence Prononce. - [THE LIFE OF LORD LOVAT - THE LAST PERSON TO BE BEHEADED IN BRITAIN]‎

‎Amsterdam, De La Compagnie, 1747. 8vo. Bound in a nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Gilt super ex-libris to front board. Wear and scratches to boards, primarily affecting front board. Internally nice and clean. (4), 363 pp.‎

‎Beautiful copy of this interesting work on the dramatic life of the 11th Lord Lovat. Although often referred to as the first appearance of this work it is in fact the first French translation of Lord Grange’s, Lord Lovat’s legal adviser, ‘Memoires of the Life of Simon Fraser Lord Lovat’ from 1746. Dr. Hill Burton notes that this is “the least inaccurate” biographical contemporary account of Lord Lovat which has ever appeared. The 11th Lord Lovat (1667 –1747), also known as Simon Fraser, was famous for his involvement in the Jacobite uprisings in Scotland during the 18th century and for being the last man in Britain to be beheaded. Lord Lovat is perhaps most famously known for his support of the Jacobite cause during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. He initially pledged allegiance to the British government but later switched sides to support the claim of Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, to the British throne. Lovat's decision to join the Jacobites was motivated by a combination of personal ambition and political calculation. Lovat's support for the Jacobites culminated in his participation in the Battle of Culloden in 1746 where the Jacobite forces were decisively defeated by the British government army. After the battle, Lovat attempted to evade capture but was eventually apprehended. He was tried for treason and subsequently executed in 1747.‎

‎BYRON, Lord.‎

Reference : 5737

(1821)

‎Lord Byron's works. In four volumes. I-IV.‎

‎Paris Francois Louis & Baudry. Collation : xii, 216, 240, 224, 232 pages.

‎First edition. Four volumes of Lord Byron's works. Complete in four volumes, as originally issued by Louis and Baudry in 1821. (This is the first Baudry publication of Byron's work). The publishers subsequently expanded this collected edition over the following years (eventually to twelve volumes by 1824), to include Byron's later works and, after his death, a memorial volume containing the first edition of Walter Scott's "Character of Lord Byron." This is a very early work to be associated with Baudry. Born in 1793, he didn't receive his brevet (permission to publish) until 1820. Baudry was one of the most significant Parisian pirate-publishers of English-language literature in the early 19th century. The present set represents the edition complete as first published, prior to that later expansion. The memoir to the beginning of volume one brushes over scandals, and writes that the Viscountess Wentworth (Lady Byron) and Byron both keep a "dignified silence" over their separation, and that Byron, in "voluntary exile" on the continent, is continuing to write, having recently completed the third and fourth cantos of Childe Harold which "lightens to gloom of the heart-broken exile." Apparently a fifth volume was published by Louis and Baudry shortly after this set. Baudry then continued to print further volumes alone. The works present here are: Volume one: The Bride of Abydos; The Corsair; Lara; Parisina. Volume two: English Bards and Scotch Reviewers; Don Juan; The Giaour. Volume three: Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; Beppo; Fare thee well etc. Volume four: The siege of Corinth; Manfred; Mazeppa; The Prisoner of Chillon; The Lament of Tasso; Various Poems. Collation: xii, 216. 240, 224, 232. pages. All half titles etc. present. 17cm x 10cm. Condition: The volumes are bound in a uniform contemporary half calf with marbled boards and leather labels with titles to spine. Volume number in gilt to spine. There is moderate rubbing to the boards and spine edges. There is loss to the head of each volume, from minor chipping up to two centimetres. The bindings are sound, but boards are just starting to become loose. Ownership signature (Martha Boyse?) has been crossed out to the end papers in a couple of the volumes. Text is sound, but with mild to moderate foxing to the pages Worst to the first few pages of each volume. Overall though, still a reasonable copy of a scarce set (or part set!). .‎
