‎Matisse-Picasso. Des années cubistes aux années glorieuses.‎

‎<p>Ce sont deux fauves mais de races différentes. L'un, Matisse, est sensation et réflexion, l'autre, Picasso, invention et aventure. On les appelait « Pôle Nord « et « Pôle Sud « ; le premier était français, le second espagnol. Ils ne se rencontrent pas avant 1905, mais dès lors ne se quittent plus. Ils se guettent, s'interpellent, s'épient ; leur rivalité est néanmoins faite de complicité, de connivence. Ils dialoguent en s'affrontant. Douze ans les séparent, mais également la vision et la conception de la peinture ; ils se retrouvent dans l'audace, la sensualité, une création ininterrompue. Alors qu'on croit généralement Matisse hostile au cubisme, il l'observe, essaie de comprendre les motivations de Picasso dont les recherches l'intriguent ; à sa manière et dans son style, il les expérimente et avoue avoir été « effleuré «, particulièrement dans ses toiles et ses dessins du Maroc. Ils exposent pour la première fois ensemble galerie Paul Guillaume en 1918, avec une double préface d'Apollinaire. Après 1920, le « retour à l'ordre « les confronte dans un hédonisme sensualiste. De Matisse, Picasso dit : « Il a un soleil dans le ventre. « Le travail de Picasso au château Grimaldi d'Antibes captive Matisse et quand celui-ci décore la chapelle de Vence, Picasso, d'abord hostile, va la visiter, et après sa mort lui rend hommage...
