Écrit à la fin de 1966, Charleston s’inscrit dans la veine « whisky » de René Fallet, un ton à la fois gouailleur et nostalgique où l’humour s’accompagne toujours d’une mélancolie légère. L’auteur, né en 1927, n’a pas connu le Londres des années folles, mais il en recrée l’atmosphère avec une jubilation romanesque : brume de fog, chapeaux melon, pubs enfumés , un assassin à la manière de Jack l’Éventreur, les rythmes syncopés du charleston sont au centre de ce décor d’un exotisme britannique réinventé, où se retrouvent son goût de la caricature et sa tendresse pour les marginaux et les amours manquées. Le tirage sur grands papiers fut limité à seulement quinze exemplaires, comme pour Un idiot à Paris (1964) et Les Pas perdus (1965), ce qui en fait l’un des livres les plus rares de l’écrivain. Parfait état.
