‎Sleeping Beauties wil veel meer zijn dan een voorspelbare verzameling slapende schoonheden. Deze tentoonstelling in het Kasteel van Gaasbeek (9 sept. t.e.m. 13 nov. 2011) neemt de bezoeker mee naar een droomwereld down the rabbit hole. De expo brengt een selectie werken uit de hedendaagse kunst van de laatste dertig jaar die zich specifiek door slaap en droom liet inspireren. Naar de filosofie van het Kasteel van Gaasbeek treden de werken van grote namen en aanstormende talenten in dialoog met de romantische kasteelinterieurs. We ontmoeten slapende figuren en poetische dagdromers, maar ook mysterieuze schimmen en beklemmende nachtmerries. Bezoekers worden ondergedompeld in een onwerkelijke sfeer, geinspireerd door het blauwe uur. Je komt terecht in een intermediaire wereld, die zweeft tussen dag en nacht, tussen waak en slaap. Enkele namen: Michael Borremans, Sophie Calle, David Claerbout, Desiree Dolron, Lily Dujourie, Ann Veronica Janssen, Hans Op de Beeck, Andres Serrano, Robert Therrien, Spencer Tunick, Bill Viola,. Sleeping Beauties wants to be more than just another predictable collection of attractive sleepyheads. With a selection of contemporary artworks explicitly inspired by the world of dream and sleep, the exposition Sleeping Beauties allows its visitors to take a peek into the dream world down the rabbit hole. In accordance with the philosophy of the Kasteel van Gaasbeek both the works of acclaimed artists (Michael Borremans, Spencer Tunick, Bill Viola,.), newcomers and outsiders is shown, and given the chance to interact with the romantic interiors of the castle. During the trip down the wonderland of sleep we meet daydreamers, blissful sleepers, mysterious phantoms and fearsome creatures of the night. Visitors are submerged in a hidden world, an illusory atmosphere, inspired by the blue hour. One steps into an intermediary world, floating between day and night, between snoozing and being wide awake. ‎

‎'We didn't move from our spot for minutes and let the unreality of the scenery in the midday silence take effect on us.' A million-dollar treasure in dust and wild growth, in rust and mud and shards, captured as a photo-aesthetic masterpiece. In the 1980s, Herbert W. Hesselmann succeeded in capturing the morbid charm of a unique collection of classic cars. At the time, he promised the owner that he would never reveal the name or location. But the story and the pictures went around the world and caused an outcry in the scene. The horror at the obvious neglect of the rare vehicles weighed heavily. Hesselmann's 'Sleeping Beauties' also triggered a kind of gold rush. From then on, automobile treasure hunters scoured old barns and walls all over the world in search of a comparable find - although no one was ever able to find something of this spectacular magnitude again. 'Sleeping Beauties' are now a fixed, romantic term for every classic car fan. What was once insulted as neglected is now celebrated as 'original' or 'patinated'. Rust has become socially acceptable. Thirty years after the scandal, we look at Herbert W. Hesselmann's photos with different eyes and are happy that he captured this unique moment for all time.‎
