Un volume in -8° ( 22 x 14,1 cm), pp. XVI, 506, 24 illustrazioni f.t. di George Cruikshank, bella tela editoriale verde con fregi in nero e titoli in oro al dorso e al piatto superiore. Taglio alla cuffia superiore del secondo volume. Su indicazione dell'amico Forster Dickens decise di pubblicare un'edizione elegante delle sue opere che fino ad allora erano state pubblicate solo in edizione economica. Fu così che tra il 1858-59 la Library Edition apparve in 22 volumi con frontespizi illustrati. Tra il 1861 e il 1874 questa stessa edizione venne ripubblicata in 30 volumi con l'aggiunta di Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Our Mutual Friend, The Uncommercial Traveller, A Child's History of England, Christmas Stories, Edwin and Drood. Questa nuova edizione venne illustrata da artisti come Marcus Stone, John Leech e Clarkson Stanfield - e venne conosciuta con il nome di Illustrated Library Edition. Come quasi tutti i lavori di Dickens, il romanzo è stato pubblicato a puntate mensili su un giornale di proprietà dello stesso scrittore, riscuotendo subito un enorme successo. Molti degli elementi del romanzo si ispirano ad eventi della vita stessa dell'autore; esso, infatti, si può considerare l'autobiografia romanzata della vita del grande scrittore ottocentesco, il più autobiografico tra tutti i libri da lui scritti[ Gimbel D72 .
