C'est en 1838 que s'était ouvert à Philadelphie le "Chinese Museum", au premier niveau du Musée de Charles Willson Peale, sur la base des objets rapportés de Chine par le négociant quaker Nathan Dunn (1782-1844), revenu d'un long séjour commercial à Canton (1818-1832). L'ensemble de cette collection fut montrée également à Londres en 1842, puis, après la mort de Dunn, en 1851, la seconde fois avec beaucoup moins de succès.
